Khadija Al-Salami Wins Top Prize At The Dubai Film Festival

16 December 2014 1:17 PM, PST | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Yemeni filmmaker Khadija Al-Salami won the top prize at the Dubai International Film Festival for her powerful I Am Nujoom, Age 10 And Divorced, about Yemeni child brides. Adapted from the book of the same name, the film won a rave review from Jury President Lee Daniels. “I love this film so much,” he commented at the fest’s awards ceremony.

The award marks a spectacular redemptive arc for Al-Salami, who was herself a child bride in her native Yemen before escaping the abusive relationship.

Now in its 11th year, Dubai has cemented its position as one of the premier platforms for Arab cinema in the world. While its host city is synonymous with glittering high rises and seven star hotels, the festival has etched out a place as a much-needed serious-minded and thoughtful meeting place for the region’s filmmakers.

With 24 states — almost half the U.S. — now suing Barack Obama’s federal government over its executive action on immigration reform, Eva Longoria says she backs the president's move, designed to spare millions living illegally from deportation. Speaking at the Dubai International Film Festival, the actress — who is from the state of Texas, which is leading the coalition against Obama's measures — said that it was "imperative" that the immigration reforms took place. "Immigration reform is a global problem. Every country has issues with immigrant labor and industries being dependent on them," she said. "But we have

If history is any indicator, this year’s nominees for performance by a cast in a motion picture—“Birdman,” “Boyhood,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game,” and “The Theory of Everything”—are an accurate predictor of which films will be taking top honors as Hollywood’s awards season unfolds. Several of those movie’s performances earned nominations in the leading role categories as well, including Benedict Cumberbatch for his work as Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” Michael Keaton as the titular hero in “Birdman,” and both Eddie Redmayne »

2015 SAG Award Nominations Snubs and Surprises: No Selma or Unbroken Nods, Birdman Leads

10 December 2014 7:35 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Ansel Elgort and Eva Longoria announced the nominees for the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Wednesday morning, and as always, there were quite a few surprises and snubs that really got people talking! Most notably absent from the motion picture category? Selma, a civil rights era film focusing on Martin Luther King, Jr. and fellow activists circa 1965. The Oprah Winfrey-produced movie was snubbed across the board—with no nods in any category, even for David Oyelowo, who seemed a shoe-in for the Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role category. Another apparent SAG snub was the lack of nominations for Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie.  Neither the film nor Jack O'Connell (who plays Louis »

Jake Gyllenhaal & Jennifer Aniston Win Surprise SAG Nominations As 'Selma' Is Snubbed

10 December 2014 6:10 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Awards season goes into full force in the next few days; we've had plenty of critics' groups picks and top-ten lists already, but tomorrow is the Golden Globe announcements, and today sees the first of the major guilds -- usually the best reflection of how the Academy will end up going -- announcing their nominations. The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nods are being revealed by Eva Longoria and "Men Women & Children" actor Ansel Elgort (the only time the words 'awards 'and 'Men Women & Children' will be seen in close proximity). Last year saw SAG match up relatively closely with the Academy's nominations, but with some major differences including ensemble, Actor, and Supporting Actress nods for the un-nominated "The Butler," and nods for Tom Hanks, Emma Thompston, Daniel Bruhl and James Gandolfini that didn't come to pass. So how did the SAG gang go this year? Questionably, we'd say. »

2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations Announced: 'Birdman' Leads the Way

10 December 2014 5:45 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The 2015 Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced this morning by Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) and Eva Longoria and it was a bid day for Birdman, leading the way with four nominations, missing out only on a leading female actor nomination, a role the film doesn't really have. Following Birdman is Boyhood, The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything with three nominations each and Benedict Cumberbatch is the actor of the hour, scoring nominations as part of the Imitation Game ensemble as well as a lead actor nomination and a nomination for his performance in "Sherlock". The most baffling nomination of the lot is the one for Naomi Watts, whose work in St. Vincent is hardly worthy of a nomination, serving as the only sore spot in a film that even those that liked it didn't really like. SAG Noms: Surprises, Snubs, Sexism, Stunts

10 December 2014 5:40 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The nominations were announced live here (by Eva Longoria and Ansel Elgort) and on TBS & TNT. My wrong predictions were back here.

Though I have many pet peeves about the way the actors guild decides and divvies up its honor, here's one that's wildly underdiscussed online and I don't think it's at all insignificant or petty. Each year they refuse to alphabetize correctly, always listing Male Actor categories Before Female Actor categories. That might make sense at the Oscars since "Actor" does comes before "Actress" in the alphabet if not in our hearts, but "Female" does not  come After "Male" when you alphabetize and yet SAG always lists the men first. Highly sexist if you ask me though they are obviously super self-righteous about not calling women "Actresses". Go figure.

If you don't think this is sexist consider this subliminal perhaps subconscious related value judgement: Drama is always listed before »

The awards season has begun in earnest with this morning's announcement for the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations. Ansel Elgort and Eva Longoria announced the nominees for TV and film this morning, and there are a few surprises - most notably, the lack of any support for "Selma," an Oscar buzzy ensemble. According to GoldDerby, "DVD screeners could not be sent out to the 2,100 members of the Screen Actors' Guild nominating committee in time thanks to production delays on the film. Some voters did see industry screenings of 'Selma,' but not all."
