‘That Thing You Do!’ Twenty-One Years Later: The Gay Subplot That Never Made it Into Theaters

‘That Thing You Do!’ Twenty-One Years Later: The Gay Subplot That Never Made it Into Theaters
They just don’t make ’em like they used to. When “That Thing You Do!” waltzed into our hearts twenty-one years ago today, it heralded the arrival of Tom Hanks — screenwriter and director. A commercial and critical success, “That Thing You Do!” is the kind of low-budget runaway hit that major Hollywood studios just don’t make anymore. An addictively fun tale of one adorable boy band’s rise to fame, decorated with stylish 1960s period panache, the movie starred Hanks as the band’s kind-hearted manager, Mr. White. What many people don’t know, however, is that Mr. White originally had a hunky boyfriend (hilariously played by former NFL player Howie Long).

In a deleted scene included in the director’s cut, Mr. White finds lead singer Guy (“La La Land” star Tom Everett Scott) stumbling drunkenly out of the convertible of an alluring waitress (played by Hanks’ wife,

  • The Wrap
This preview will be continually updating between now and the big weekend. Last updated Thursday, January 29, 2015.

The last time Hollywood invaded Arizona was for the Super Bowl in January 2008.

Mansions were captured, luxury car companies shuttled stars across the desert, and the Maxim party (featuring the late DJ Am) then at a mega resort north of Scottsdale looked like four or five of Brent Bolthouse and Jen Rosero’s best nightclub events cobbled together in an indoor/outdoor party pangea.

Terry Bradshaw sat out of the Fox NFL Sunday coverage after his son-in-law, former Titans kicker Rob Bironas, died in a car accident on Saturday night at the age of 36.

“Terry will not appear on today’s edition of Fox NFL Sunday,” Fox said in a statement. “He flew to Nashville early this morning to be with his daughter Rachel during this tremendously difficult time. Derek Kwok’s As the Light Goes Out Hits Hong Kong Early Next Year

I’m typically a little skeptical when it comes to movies about firefighters battling epic blazes. Some of them are pretty good (“Backdraft”) and others, well, not so much (“Ladder 49″). Let me say this: The first person who posts anything bad about Howie Long’s “Firestorm” is going to have to answer to me. I’m not kidding. Okay, maybe I am. Derek Kwok’s upcoming firefighting flick “As the Light Goes Out” actually looks pretty good. Nevermind that I have a soft spot for Hong Kong movies — I’d watch this thing regardless of where it originated. Besides, it’s always fun to see Nicholas Tse, Simon Yam, Andy On, and Bai Bing doing their respective things. The flames and turmoil are just an added bonus. Check out this synopsis: The bond of brotherhood is always stronger when you can be pitched into a life and death situation

Thn HalloweenFest Day 12: The Wicker Man

‘Come. It is time to keep your appointment with the Wicker Man.’

Director: Robin Hardy

Cast: Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland

Plot: Police Sergeant Howie is called to the island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl, Rowan Morrison. There he finds a deeply unorthodox, religious people, and a village of rituals and sacrifice…

The year is 2006. The date: September 1st. Neil Labute and Nicolas Cage have just single-handedly tarnished the name of one of the greatest horror films of all time, in one nauseating move. You know what I’m talking about. That’s right. Not The Bees!

Ok, let’s rewind 33 years and remind ourselves just why the original The Wicker Man was so great. Maybe it’ll even help us to forget about the travesty of the remake. Possibly. Robin Hardy’s directorial debut is not just a horror film – though horrific it

Huge Upside for Launch of Fox Sports 1 and 2 Channels

If it’s at all nerve-wracking for Fox to try to transform two niche sports cable networks into take-all-comers Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, it would be more nerve-wracking not to. There’s the fear of missing out on the next wave of sports entertainment revenue, this era’s version of a television gold rush. And the fact that Fox’s expensive rights deals all but demand the company find a grander stage for them.

And there’s the queasy feeling that Fox would have to live with if it played a wallflower while others seized the day.

That’s why on Aug. 17, viewers will wake up to find the lower-key Speed and Fuel networks transformed into high-adrenaline national sports channels intended to make an immediate impression — among sports fans and the industry alike.

“Look, it’s scary, right?” says Fox Sports Media Group co-prexy and chief operating officer Eric Shanks.
