Kanye West leads the field for the 50th annual Grammy Awards with eight nominations, followed by Amy Winehouse with six and Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and T-Pain with five each.
Winehouse's "Rehab" and Foo Fighters' "The Pretender" are nominated for record of the year, while her "Back to Black" and their "Echo, Silence, Patience & Grace" will vie for album of the year.
The other record of the year nominees are Beyonce's "Irreplaceable", Rihanna's "Umbrella" featuring Jay-Z and "What Goes Around ... Comes Around" by Justin Timberlake. Other album of the year nominations went to West ("Graduation"), Vince Gill ("These Days") and Herbie Hancock ("River: The Joni Letters").
"Umbrella", written by Shawn Carter, Kuk Harrell, Terius "Dream" Nash & Christopher Stewart, and the Winehouse-penned "Rehab" also garnered noms for song of the year, which goes to the songwriter. Also vying in that category are "Like a Star", written and sung by Corinne Bailey Rae; "Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's, penned by the band's Tom Higgenson; and Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats", written by John Kear & Chris Tompkins.
"Can someone wake (Winehouse) up around 6 in the afternoon and tell her?" said George Lopez, who helped announce the noms Thursday at the Music Box@Fonda in Hollywood. Having fun with the British singer's recent troubles, which include her and her husband's drug-related arrests and her canceled tour dates, he then muttered "drunk ass. She makes Lindsay Lohan look cool."
Winehouse also surfaced in the best new artist category, along with Feist, Paramore, Taylor Swift and Ledisi. »
Lindsay Lohan ditched snowboarder lover Riley Giles after hooking up with single Oscar-nominated Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger, according to reports. The Georgia Rule actress split with Giles - who she met in rehab - last week, supposedly so the actress could concentrate on her career. But Australian magazine NW claims she dumped Giles after meeting Ledger in a New York club over Thanksgiving. The magazine reports, "Lindsay and Heath hit it off straight away. When she left the club she started texting him straight away and they hooked up a few times while she was still in New York. They were meeting late at night for sex. It was purely physical." Ledger has been single since splitting from fiancee Michelle Williams in September. »
A former bodyguard of Lindsay Lohan is suing Star magazine for libel, claiming the U.S. publication printed his photo alongside an article in which another minder broke his silence about the actress' private life. In legal papers, filed in Los Angeles on Friday, Andrae 'Doc' Renard alleges the feature, published in June has "irreparably damaged" his professional reputation. Renard claims Star magazine used his likeness instead of the bodyguard quoted in the article, Lee Weaver, and is suing the publication for libel, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He is seeking compensatory damages and legal costs. »
Lindsay Lohan and her snowboarder boyfriend Riley Giles have split, according to U.S. reports. The couple met and fell in love while they were both seeking treatment at Utah's Cirque Lodge rehab retreat this summer. Sources tell People magazine the pair decided to end the romance at the beginning of this week. A friend of the actress tells the publication, "(Lindsay) is concentrating on her life and her career." Recent reports suggest the Mean Girls star is keen to return to the recording studio to work on her third album over Christmas, and she's rumored to be making a guest appearance on TV hit Ugly Betty when the Hollywood writers strike is resolved. »
The victim of Lindsay Lohan's 2005 Hollywood car crash has retrieved the actress' bar bill to prove she was under the influence when the accident occurred. Lohan is being sued by Raymundo Ortega for crashing her Mercedes-Benz into his red van in Los Angeles, after allegedly drinking at celebrity hotspot The Ivy. The Mean Girls star has refuted claims she had consumed alcohol during her lunch date with pals and says the police report of the incident will prove her innocence against Ortega's allegations. But Ortega has now gotten hold of the actress' restaurant bill, which shows the party of five ordered four Ivy Gimlets - a strong vodka and mint cocktail, reports Tmz.com. And he hopes the new evidence will be enough for a judge to rule in his favor over the negligence lawsuit - although there is no way of knowing if Lohan, then 19, drank the cocktail. Lohan - who was recently ordered to give a videotaped deposition in relation to the lawsuit - has filed a countersuit to fight the claims, and is seeking damages of $75,000 from Ortega. A trial date of April 7 has been set for both cases. »
Lindsay Lohan has been ordered to give a deposition for a negligence lawsuit filed against her earlier this year after crashing her car in October 2005. The actress is being sued by victim Raymundo Ortega for crashing her Mercedes-Benz into his red van in Hollywood, after allegedly drinking at celebrity hotspot The Ivy. Lohan's attorneys have been attempting to have plans for the star to give evidence on videotape scrapped, amid fears the footage could later be sold on for a large amount of cash, reports Tmz.com. They claimed: "If a single picture of Ms. Lohan can sell for thousands of dollars, a videotape of the deposition will undoubtedly sell for tens of thousands of dollars, or more." But on Wednesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Stern dismissed their argument and ruled Lohan must give video evidence. The 21-year-old has filed her own countersuit against Ortega, alleging he and a number of unspecified defendants caused the accident. A trial date of April 7 has been set for both cases. »
Lindsay Lohan has served just over 80 minutes in jail in relation to her two drunk-driving arrests in Beverly Hills, California and nearby Santa Monica in May and July. The actress checked in to the Lynwood jail in California on Thursday morning - and was out by lunchtime, according to website Tmz.com. The jail is the same one that both Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie served time in earlier this year for driving offenses. Lohan was initially sentenced to serve four days behind bars in August, after pleading guilty to two of the seven misdemeanor charges against her, but a judge cut that in half and ordered her to carry out 10 days of community service instead. The actress began her community service with the American Red Cross on Monday. A further day was taken off the jail sentence because of time Lohan has already served during her arrests. The star - who spent much of the summer in rehab at Utah's Cirque Lodge facility - was told she had to complete her prison sentence by January. »
Lindsay Lohan has begun her community service in Los Angeles, as part of the plea deal relating to her convictions for driving under the influence earlier this year. The Georgia Rule actress started her 10-day stint on Monday, when was snapped entering an American Red Cross blood services facility at midday. She was later seen leaving the building at 7pm local time, carrying a book simply titled, Blood. Lohan, 21, was charged with driving under the influence and being under the influence of cocaine in relation to two drink-driving arrests in Beverly Hills, California and nearby Santa Monica in May and July of this year. Police allegedly found cocaine in the star's possession on both occasions, although officials say the amount of the drug was below the 0.05 grams required for a felony offence. Lohan was initially sentenced to four days behind bars in August, after pleading guilty to two of the seven misdemeanor charges against her, but a judge cut that in half and ordered her to carry out 10 days of community service instead. A further day was taken off the jail sentence because of time Lohan has already served during her arrests. The star - who spent much of the summer in rehab at Utah's Cirque Lodge facility - must complete her prison sentence by January, according to People.com. »
Lindsay Lohan's smashed up former Mercedes-Benz is up for grabs on auction site eBay.com. The 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, which Georgia Rule star Lohan drove all over Beverly Hills - hitting paparazzi and other cars - before she checked into rehab this summer, has just 6,200 miles on the clock, and is being offered for a starting bid of $110,000. The car has the same license plate as the car Lohan crashed into a tree in May, and the sellers insist it's authentic: "We purchased this car with minor damage in the left front corner from California about 60 days ago." »
Paris Hilton has replaced former pal Lindsay Lohan as Las Vegas nightclub LAX's New Year's Eve good time girl - for a whopping $1 million. The socialite will end a tough year, which saw her spending time behind bars, and ring in 2008 with sister Nicky Hilton. And sources tell In Touch Weekly the 26-year-old heiress is being offered a cool $1 million to play hostess. Being paid to show her face is nothing new to Hilton - she reportedly earned more than $2 million just for sitting in the front row at designer Kira Plastinina's fashion show in Russia on Monday. One insider tells In Touch, "Paris is receiving the biggest payday ever for a one-night appearance in Vegas. Nobody draws a crowd like she does." Lohan was initially billed to host the LAX party, but she pulled out earlier this week citing post-rehab sobriety concerns. »
Lindsay Lohan's new tough-guy bodyguard is on the hunt for a pushy photographer who kicked the actress during a Halloween fracas in an underground parking garage. The Freaky Friday star's bodyguard, an ex-Israeli Army soldier, chased away the kicker after he attacked Lohan as she left a Beverly Hills restaurant - and then asked other snappers to identify the man. When they couldn't, the bodyguard asked one to find out who the guy was and tell him, "I want to meet him personally." The mystery bodyguard has been by Lohan's side for weeks and has established a fearsome reputation among the paparazzi regulars who follow the actress all over Los Angeles. As he barged his way through the paparazzi army waiting for his boss, he declared, "Everyone in my way is gonna be pushed." But he added to Lohan's misery as he accidentally closed the door of her black Suv on her injured leg, prompting the actress to yelp. Seconds before, Lohan cried, "Ow, I got kicked in the leg," after her bizarre attack. Once she was safely in the car, the actress' minder stormed off after the kicking cameraman, fuming, "Who was that?" »
Lindsay Lohan's aides are going out of their way to make sure the actress/singer stays sober after spending much of the summer in rehab - they've told staff at all her old hangouts not to let her drink alcohol. The Mean Girls star found this out for herself when she tried to order vodka at Los Angeles' Viceroy hotel on October 19. A staff member at the hotel reveals Lohan spent an hour sipping water, but felt the need for something stronger as her friends started to get tipsy. A source tells Life & Style magazine, "She was fine at first, but it was obviously too soon for her to be around people who were drinking, because she later asked the server for a vodka. But her people had called ahead and servers were told not to give in no matter how often Lindsay asked for alcohol." Despite denials about the incident from Lohan's publicist, a guest at the Viceroy, who overheard the exchange between the actress and a waitress, tells the publication, "I heard the waitress say that she was sorry but she wasn't allowed to serve her. Lindsay walked out soon after, looking embarrassed." »
Lindsay Lohan's family have signed up to star in their own reality TV show. The Osbournes-style program will mainly feature Dina Lohan and her singer/actress daughter Ali Lohan, but Lindsay will be making a few cameo appearances. Filming for the series, which will be shown on E!, is set to begin on October 30 in New York. Dina Lohan will be at the center of the action as well as serving as executive producer. The show will also follow the Lohan matriarch as she attempts to manage other performers' careers. She tells People, "It's about what I do, how you can be successful, and be a single mom and fulfilling your kids' dreams. It won't just be following my family around like other shows. It'll show me cultivating careers, going to soccer practice. Ali going to school and in the studio. It'll encompass everything. Lindsay is a family member and will lend a helping hand if Ali asks her, when she's in the recording studio. We just want it to be real." »
Lindsay Lohan has hit out at reports suggesting she and new boyfriend Riley Giles are planning to wed, stating the ring she's wearing on her wedding finger is a gift from her dad. Lohan was spotted sporting the subtle band while out and about in Hollywood on Tuesday night, but has since transferred it to another finger after causing a fuss. The Freaky Friday star's publicist insists the engagement rumors are ridiculous and the new ring is a gift from her father, Michael, who recently ended a two-year estrangement from his daughter by meeting up with her in rehab in Utah. He admits he was taken aback by the engagement story: "I don't know anything about Lindsay being engaged. If she did (get engaged), she would have come to me or Riley would have come to me himself." »
Lindsay Lohan has sparked rumors her romance with snowboarder Riley Giles is deadly serious after stepping out with a subtle ring on her wedding finger. Lohan sported the sparkler as she hit the Hollywood party scene on Tuesday night in an all-black mini-dress and beret combo. The Georgia Rule star met Giles at the Cirque lodge rehab center in Utah, where she spent much of the summer tackling substance abuse issues. The couple has since been spotted out and about in Los Angeles, where Lohan is shooting a new film - and the actress has even started cooing publicly about her new love. She tells the new issue of In Touch Weekly magazine, "We started out as friends. We met about two months ago while doing activities at Cirque. We both enjoyed rock climbing." She adds that she "loves" the fact her new guy is totally unimpressed by Hollywood: "He finds it all very funny. That's what I love about him. He has a good sense of humor." And now it seems Lohan is wearing his ring. An insider says, "Lindsay and Riley are very serious about each other." Giles, 25, broke off a serious relationship with ex-girlfriend Bree Tierney just before he started dating Lohan in rehab. He insists the split had nothing to do with his new love: "I broke up with Bree a week before I started dating Lindsay. We had dated for almost two years, but it's not like we were engaged or anything." That doesn't sit well with heartbroken Tierney's mom, Tess - she insists her daughter was engaged to the snowboarding lothario. She says, "Riley just stopped calling Bree and never told her about Lindsay. She found out by seeing photos. It destroyed her." »
Lindsay Lohan has filed a countersuit against the alleged victim of her 2005 Hollywood car crash, claiming driver Raymundo Ortega was the one responsible for the accident. Ortega, who filed a negligence lawsuit against Lohan in Los Angeles in June, claims the actress had been drinking at celebrity hotspot The Ivy before crashing her Mercedes-Benz into his red van in October 2005. But the Just My Luck star is fighting the accusations with her own court action - alleging Ortega and a number of unspecified defendants caused the crash. And according to the papers filed at the Superior Court on Thursday, Lohan claims Ortega was "negligent in the ownership, operation, repairs and maintenance" of his vehicle. She says Ortega made an illegal u-turn in front of her car causing her to hit the brakes - but failed to stop in time, despite traveling at just 30 miles-per-hour. She is seeking damages of $75,000 from Ortega. Lohan's counter-claims come exactly one month after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge rejected the 21-year-old's request to have Ortega's lawsuit dismissed on the grounds of lacking legal sufficiency. A trial date of April 7 has been set for both cases. »
Actress Tara Reid will never get into trouble with the authorities because she isn't "stupid" like party girls Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. The American Pie beauty, 31, insists she is a reformed party girl and is no longer prepared to risk her career, insisting her work comes before her social life. She says, "I think the reason I never ended up in as much trouble as Paris or Lindsay seem to is that I'm not stupid, so I'd never do a lot of the things those girls do, and I've always had good friends around me. They need to straighten up a little bit and make better investments. And they should surround themselves with better people who don't let them get themselves in trouble. You'll never read a story about me going out and partying when I'm supposed to be working. Nor would I show up on a set drunk or miss a day's work - never." »
Lindsay Lohan backed out of plans to return to Hollywood at the weekend, telling her dad she wasn't ready to head back to Tinseltown after rehab. The actress is currently continuing rehab with outpatient treatment after checking out of the Cirque Lodge in Utah on Friday, but she's staying close to the facility. Her father Michael, who is currently taking care of the Freaky Friday star, says, "She said, 'Dad, I don't feel ready to go back to Hollywood.'" Lohan's father also reveals that the troubled actress has a sober companion with her at all times - in a bid to make sure she doesn't return to her wild ways. He tells Life & Style magazine, "That's how committed Lindsay is to her sobriety. She doesn't want to do anything to mess it up. She's doing so well. She's doing whatever she can to keep the right influences around her." And when she does return to Hollywood, where she's scheduled to shoot new scenes for her latest film Dare To Love Me, Lohan will be accompanied by a sober companion. Her father says, "Cirque representatives are looking for a place for her to stay. It will be somewhere safe, where she can continue her treatment." »
Does Hollywood have a new It Boy?
Over sandwiches at Barney's Greengrass and over beer at Barney's Beanery, the talk is about Chris Pine, who might be the hottest new actor in town. He is in discussions to star as Captain Kirk in Paramount's "Star Trek" and in negotiations to star opposite George Clooney in Joe Carnahan's adaptation of the James Ellroy crime novel "White Jazz".
If Pine joins "Trek", which J.J. Abrams is directing, he would face off against Eric Bana, who was cast Tuesday as the film's villain, Nero. It is unknown whether Bana would play a human or a member of the alien race, like a Klingon; as per the veil of secrecy that surrounds "Trek", parts are being solicited and offered without scripts.
The take it-or-leave-it scenario is very much the modus operandi of Abrams, who worked the same way when making his ultra-mysterious film "Cloverfield".
Lindsay Lohan has given her first frank in-depth interview from rehab and insists she's planning to turn her troubled life around, give up partying and plan a charity mission to Africa. The Mean Girls star, who has been a patient at the Cirque Lodge rehab facility in Utah since August following two drunk-driving charges earlier this year, has opened up to America's In Touch Weekly magazine. Still completing her stay there, Lohan insists her "self destructive" ways are behind her: "Partying and having all of those pictures taken distracts from the work that I do. It's not why I started acting. I didn't get into acting to be written about. It kind of just happened - so I accept that it's my life. But there are some things that I can do to make changes and grow up. I want to act like a woman rather than a teenager. I am doing the best I can." And she admits rehab has been a "humbling" experience - once she learned how to take orders from others: "It was hard surrendering and having people tell me what to do. It was really humbling for me, but I liked how I was treated as a normal person. I kept the common areas clean. I liked making coffee for the gym the best." Lohan is now hoping to return to filming before jetting off to Africa, adding, "I'm planning a trip to Africa during the second week in December. I'm working with the American Red Cross, but it is not finalized yet." Lohan also used the In Touch article to apologize to fans for letting them down. She concludes, "I just want to apologize to any of my fans that look up to me, especially my younger fans, for setting the examples that I didn't mean to set. That is one of the reasons that I want to change things. I don't want to be known as that person. I have a younger sister and she looks up to me, too. All the negative stuff that gets said hurts my feelings, it hurts my sister, Ali, and my family." »
