‘The 5th Wave’ DVD Review

31 May 2016 8:19 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Alex Roe, Gabriela Lopez, Bailey Anne Borders, Nick Robinson, Ron Livingston, Maggie Siff, Zack Arthur, David Maldonado | Written by Susannah Grant, Akiva Goldsman, Jeff Pinkner | Directed by J Blakeson

I enjoyed The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, the Y/A sci-fi novel that this film is based on. I thought it was interesting, entertaining and fun. I was intrigued to see if the film would be able to deliver those same things. I didn’t see the film right away, and I began to notice the negative reviews coming out about it. People giving it some super-low ratings and calling it “terrible” and “worthless” and other similar words. I wanted to check it out for myself.

Directed by J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed, The Descent Part 2), the story of The 5th Wave takes part in a world that has been invaded by aliens. Deadly »

Five Unforgettable Clips from the Movie Swingers

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 20 years since Swingers came out in the theaters. And since that time the cast has done pretty well for itself, namely Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. Vaughn, as all of you know has become a comedic “icon” if you will. He’s clearly earned the title “Mr. Sarcastic Funny Guy” which you can originally see in Swingers. Favreau has gone the directing route and he found immediate success with Ironman and Elf.  But let’s not forget some other notables. Ron Livingston, Heather Graham, and Brooke Langton were all in this flick. Though

Film Review: ‘The 5th Wave’ Crashes, Then Slowly Dissipates

22 January 2016 4:54 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Is there ever an end to the Young Adult Dystopia genre (“Hunger Games,” “Maze Runner,” etc.)? Or are we cursed with the end of the world every year, if it weren’t for those meddling kids? “The 5th Wave” is the latest adaptation, and if you haven’t read the source novel, good luck following it.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

Yep, this is for fans of the book only, this time written by Rick Yancey, if that’s his real name. Instead of vampires or hunger or mazes, this time it’s space aliens (so obvious for the picking, good job Rick Y!). The numeric “wave” in the title refers to the step-by-step infiltration of the alien presence (1st, 2nd, etc.). At the 5th Wave, there is confrontation, and who better to confront those nasty invaders than a kid army and cute-as-a-button Chloë Grace Moretz. There is no subtlety in “The 5th Wave, »

The 5th Wave movie review: disaster movie, in more ways than one

22 January 2016 2:31 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Lazy and trite, with a passive protagonist. It’s as if no one here understands the appeal of the postapocalyptic Ya genre it is attempting to piggyback on. I’m “biast” (pro): big sci-fi fan; desperate for stories about women; like Chloë Grace Moretz

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

And so we reach the point at which movies based on postapocalyptic Ya novels have simply stopped bothering, and now just toss up on the screen a pretty heroine, a couple of hot guys, and an obstacle course of an adventure to plow through, and consider the job done. This one is so lazy and so trite that it is itself a kind of disaster.

Here, there have been four waves of attack on Earth by mysterious aliens hovering over the planet in gigantic ships. »

Movie Review – The 5th Wave (2016)

22 January 2016 9:30 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The 5th Wave, 2016.

Directed by J. Blakeson.

Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Nick Robinson, Maria Bello, Ron Livingston, Zackary Arthur, Maggie Siff, Alex Roe and Maika Monroe.

Synopsis:

In The 5th Wave, set in the present day, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, 16-year-old Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie meets a young man who may become her final hope.

Telegraphing your twist is one thing if it can still be pulled off with dramatic execution, but The 5th Wave is pretty much an exercise in indifference and boredom. I am admittedly not the kind of viewer that destroys their brain trying to predict the big reveal so I can feel smarter and superior than everyone else, but it’s right… »

Pumpkin, The 5th Wave Is Plagued Not by Aliens But, Rather, an Undercooked Concept

22 January 2016 8:18 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

“Pumpkin, there’s nothing safe anymore.” That’s what calmly downcast Oliver Sullivan (Ron Livingston) tells his teenage daughter, Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz), partway through the new young-adult dystopian sci-fi The 5th Wave, and it’s a good example of the kind of very thin, deadly line the film tries to walk. It’s a movie not just about losing one’s innocence (that’s what all Ya books and movies are about these days) but about soft centers and hard shells — about the cute colliding with the cruel. That “pumpkin” makes the line ridiculous, but it’s also the word that sells the overall conceit of a seeming lyordinary girl’s life being transformed forever.A lot of Ya stories focus on characters who were outcasts or outsiders to begin with (Katniss in The Hunger Games being a prime example). Cassie, as she makes clear in The 5th Wave’s opening narration, »

The 5th Wave – The Review

21 January 2016 10:21 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Well film fans, 2016’s not even a month old and we’re already back in “young adult novel” land at the multiplex. Well, it’s not the tear-jerker terminal romance of The Fault In Our Stars or If I Stay. No it’s another one about a horrible future in which several special “gifted” (and highly photogenic) teenagers are humanity’s only hope. Betcha’ thought that the last installment of The Hunger Games would bring down the curtain on these tormented teen tales. Not likely since a new series pops up almost every week at your local bookstore (oh, we are lucky to have these fine establishments, so support them). While this new film does possess familiar elements of other “Ya” novel based movies, the producers have thrown in a few unique themes and twists. And it stars one of our most interesting young actors (the star of the earlier »

It's Chloe Grace Moretz vs. aliens in 4 new clips from The 5th Wave

21 January 2016 7:30 AM, PST | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Based on the popular young adult series, The 5th Wave could be the next Hunger Games.

The film follows Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Moretz), who after four waves of deadly alien attacks, is on the run to save her young brother. In four new clips, we can see that Cassie is the new female heroine that we need. While Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss and Shailene Woodley's Tris have both ruled their dystopian universes, Cassie is fighting a totally different battle - aliens.

It’s great to see a female at the front and centre of an alien invasion film, and the rest of the cast looks great as well. Maria BelloRon Livingston and Liev Schreiber are joined by up-and-coming actors including Maika Monroe (It Follows), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Nick Robinson (Jurassic World).

We’re excited to see Moretz battle it out on the big »
