Mad Men 5.10 "Christmas Waltz" Review
It is December 1966 in Mad Men and unlike the last Christmas period we saw things are more financially stable for Scdp. The firm is not a powerhouse nor is it teetering on the edge of oblivion, but that doesn't mean that all of the characters are in a comfortable financial position as we see in the opening sequence as Lane (Jared Harris) discusses his impending doom on the phone. Lane is a character that we have seen little of since his dust up with Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) and so this storyline is a welcome return even if Lane's actions were rather dubious and will likely have some major consequences. Joan (Christina Hendricks) is another character who has been a bit player over the past few weeks, but this episode more than makes up for this.
Lane needs funds quickly due to what appears to be »

Mad Men 5.09 "Dark Shadows" Review
While the title of this episode of Mad Men could be perfect timing for the new Johnny Depp movie that was released this weekend (and is based on a TV show that debuted in 1966) it has much less to do with pop culture and more to do with what threats are lurking. This darkness is real and imaginary as light or the absence of it is used to highlight insecurities and challenges.
The episode opens with Betty (January Jones) making a snack in the dark; is this a snack because she didn't eat much for her real dinner? This is only the second time that Betty has appeared this season and she is slightly slimmer than when we last saw her, but there is still a major issue with food and control. Betty has always had food problems; when she was with Don she barely »

Mad Men 5.06 "Far Away Places" Review
Mad Men has used the drug counter-culture of the 1960s in previous episodes and "Far Away Places" takes this a step further by adding LSD into the mix. The trippy qualities this week don't just come from the drugs that are consumed and the same day is played out three times; from Peggy (Elizabeth Moss), Roger (John Slattery) and Don's (Jon Hamm) point of view. Each character experiences facing 'truths' whether it is ones that are aided by drugs or not and things that seem ok on the outside have a habit of not being that way under the surface; something that Mad Men is so good at conveying.
Starting with Peggy who begins her day searching for some candy that she believes to be a good luck charm and an argument with Abe (Charlie Hofheimer) and it all goes downhill from there. Despite »

Mad Men star John Slattery has said that he believes Roger and Joan are "soulmates". However, the actor said that despite their feelings for each other, he does not anticipate a reunion between his character and Christina Hendricks's alter ego. "They love each other," he said during an appearance on Watch What Happens: Live. "I don't know whether they'll ever be together, but they're sort of soulmates, I think." Slattery said earlier this week that Roger is "not enjoying himself" in the latest season, particularly because of his "impulsive" marriage to Jane (Peyton List). "I think all (more) »

Mad Men actor John Slattery has said that his character Roger "is not enjoying himself" this season. In an interview with The Atlantic, Slattery suggested that Roger is suffering the consequences of his bad decisions. In the four episodes that have aired so far, Roger's professional rivalry with Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) has escalated and his marriage to ex-secretary Jane (Peyton List) has soured. Slattery said: "I think all the characters suffer the consequences of their choices. Roger's marriage to Jane was impulsive, and it isn't necessarily a match made in heaven. "He may be in love with Joan, but he wasn't able to make the choice to marry her. Look, Roger Sterling isn't enjoying himself. Just watch the last couple of episodes." He went on to defend his character, saying: "Roger doesn't (more) »

Welcome back, Mad Men! What has it been? Seventeen months? Not like anyone was counting down to your return. Or that everyone was counting down to your return…. Alright, we missed you, Mad Men. Tremendously. And the fact that you came back with a stellar two-hour episode — entitled “A Little Kiss” — meant that you missed us as well.
So, where to begin? That it is June 1966? How about with the fact that Don Draper (Jon Hamm) is back in the saddle, both at work and at home. Over at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, he’s still the big draw even after last season’s full-page, preemptive strike of an ad against cigarette companies (a stroke of genius in my book but a potential business killer in 1965). Clients, like Heniz and Mohawk Airlines, are drunkardly tripping over themselves — Pete Campbell-style — to work with the man. He’s also not playing a »

Mad Men Season 5 Premiere "A Little Kiss" Review
Mad Men returns with this superb double episode after 17 months away from screens and many of those big questions are finally answered. Is Don (Jon Hamm) married to Megan (Jessica Paré)? Has Joan (Christina Hendricks) had her baby? What year is it?
It is the Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend in 1966, so just under a year has passed since season 4; Don has indeed married Megan and Joan has had her baby. All seems like it is going relatively well for Don and the business are still continuing despite this stability being tentative; Don and Roger (John Slattery) are sharing a secretary after all. Megan's position at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is in the creative team, a move that is not lost on a visiting Joan. Megan is unlike Jane Sterling (Peyton List), who clearly married for the money and the luxury and »

The scene opens with Bosley (Ramon Rodriguez) being chased by police officers. As an appropriate soundtrack plays over the chase scene, he is arrested and proclaims his innocence. 24 hours ago Eve (Minka Kelly) finds a postcard for Bosley from Paris but it doesn't have a message. She comments no one's taken her there. She also adds, "Maybe it's your lost love trying to heat things up again." That could have been true, see my comment later. If nothing else Eve knows Bosley's middle name is Eduardo. Bosley: "I like to keep my private life, private." That's not what he would have said in the previous episode and if that's the case it must be difficult if he talks in his sleep. A lost love doesn't seem possible. He also tells Eve. Abby (Rachael Taylor) and Kate (Annie Ilonzeh) bring caffeine and carbs. Charlie (Victor Garber) hands them a missing person's case. »
