‘Masters of Sex’ Season 4 Was Its Last, Showtime Not Renewing for Season 5

Updated: “Masters of Sex” has aired its last episode. The Season 4 finale on Nov. 13 will also function as the series finale, as Showtime will not be moving ahead with a fifth season. Showtime confirmed with the following statement to Variety: “‘Masters of Sex’ was a beautifully written and acted exploration of America’s changing sexual mores.  We are incredibly proud to have shared the story of Masters and Johnson for four critically-acclaimed seasons. The series will remain available across our platforms where new viewers can discover it for years to come.”

The fourth season of the Sony Pictures TV series ended on a fairly conclusive note, with sex research pioneers Bill Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) finally tying the knot. A few belated thoughts on this week's Masters of Sex — the show's best hour since the boxing episode from season 2 — coming up just as soon as I turn you on by mentioning social justice... A few weeks back, I noted that the season premiere was making a concerted effort to fix the problems of Bill being such a monotonously smug and controlling protagonist. But even this more humbled and reflective Bill wasn't quite enough to rekindle that season 1 flame, and I was ready to accept that Masters had somehow run out of interesting stories to tell about the Masters and Johnson relationship, despite the many huge historical turns to come. ‘Shameless,’ ‘The Affair,’ ‘Masters of Sex’ Season Premiere Dates Set at Showtime

Showtime announced fall premiere dates Wednesday for three returning original series — “Shameless,” “The Affair” and “Masters of Sex.”

Season four of “Masters of Sex” will premiere Sunday, Sept. 11 at 10 p.m. Season 7 of “Shameless will debut at 9 p.m. Oct. 2. Season three of “The Affair” will premiere at 10 p.m. Nov. 20, taking over that time period from “Masters of Sex.”

The series will premiere on Showtime’s linear-cable, on demand and digital platforms.

Shameless” is exec produced by John Wells, Christopher Chulack, Nancy M. Pimental, Krista Vernoff, Etan Frankel and Sheila Callaghan. It is produced by Bonanza Productions, Inc. in association with John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

Masters of Sex” is produced by Sony Pictures Television and exec produced by Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly, Amy Lippman and Judith Verno. “The Affair” is exec produced by Sarah Treem with Levi and Jeffrey Reiner.
