He was diagnosed as suffering from syringomyelia (rare disease affecting the spinal cord and the central nervous system) in the early 1980s. He underwent a brain operation in 1983 to correct the problem. He subsequently suffered meningitis and had a lumbar puncture to help with the pain. Since the operation he has experienced muscle wastage and little feeling in his left side. See more »
