The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

December Movie Trailer Round Up

31 December 2010 4:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This month has been one of the best that I can remember for trailers. All the studios were desperate for their trailer to get released before the Christmas holidays and we were inundated with posts. Since I love trailers so much, the inundation was most welcome. In what I am considering making a monthly post, here’s a roundup of all the trailers so far for December which I have embedded below for your viewing pleasure!

I’ve embedded them in the order in which they were released start December 1st to 31st and if I miss any, please let me know and I’ll update the post.

I really want this to be intereactive so make sure you tell us which trailers you liked the best and which you think will be great or terrible movies from what you’ve seen! So, let’s go!

‘Fast Five’ starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker – trailer review

15 December 2010 10:49 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Fast Five

Directed by: Justin Lin

Starring: Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson

Rating: Tbd

Release Date: April 29, 2011

Trailer Score: 8/10

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this trailer. The high energy, live-by-the-seat-of-your-pants lifestyle of the many colorful characters of the Fast/Furious franchise makes for an excellent invitation. This film, like it’s predecessors, promises beautiful locations, beautiful women, beautiful cars, and plenty of adrenaline to keep your senses primed to appreciate it all. I love the idea of Paul Walker and Vin Diesel versus Dwayne Johnson. How much more testosterone can you fit on one dragstrip?

So it’s gonna be: Rock vs. Diesel. Who wins? Who cares! As long as there’s plenty of screeching tires, twisted metal, nitrous-oxide, mini-skirts, and loud boom-boom music, the standard Fast/Furious fans will be well satisfied. I count myself amongst their ranks.

I loved the music in this trailer, and thought the »

Trailering: "Fast Five"

15 December 2010 8:02 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

I have a lot of love for the "Fast & Furious" series. When it works, it represents a certain apotheosis of dudeliness in movies: nothing more than manly men hanging out with their cars, their guns, and their other guns (the kinds with uvulous muscles that connect to upper dorsimus muscles). The first two sequels were duds, but the last film, 2009's "Fast & Furious" returned the series to its roots and rediscovered the material's charm as dumb action nirvana. (in my review, I described "F&F" as "entertainingly dumb, like a cat who thinks it can stop a laser pointer if it pounces quickly enough.")

Next spring, the series lumbers on with "Fast 5," the first franchise entry that, distressingly, does not feature the word "Furious" in the title. ("What if they're not as angry anymore?!?") Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are back, along with Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson, who »

Fast Five Trailer Starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson

15 December 2010 6:06 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Just when everyone thought The Fast and the Furious franchise was all but dead, Vin Diesel returned and breathed new life into the series. Fast & Furious grossed $353 million worldwide, the most out of any installment, which meant only one thing: there was going to be a sequel. Now Dominic Toretto (Diesel), Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) are returning for "one last job", only this time they're being chased by federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). The movie takes place in Rio de Janeiro, and finds them going after a corrupt businessman / drug lord who wants them dead. Of course, there are still plenty of fast cars involved, and no shortage of death defying stunts. Normally I'd say this is one blockbuster I probably won't be seeing, but then again, I did end up seeing the last one and this trailer doesn't look half-bad. It certainly seems »
