Fall TV’s Top 5 New Shows

18 October 2016 10:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Rachel Bellwoar on Fall TV’s top five new shows…

Due to how pilots are spaced out this fall, figuring out to the right time to launch a top five list gets complicated. Wait too long and you fall behind on shows that have started airing as early as August. Submit too early and newcomers like this week’s Chance on Hulu and Dirk Gently on BBC America, don’t get a, well, chance. Then there’s personal handicaps, like lack of a Netflix subscription, that force any commentary on shows like Luke Cage to be left to a later date.

So. what is this list saying? It’s saying, out of an extensive pool of new network, basic cable, and Amazon titles, these five are the best and most worthy of your commitment this season. As a title, it’s a mouthful, but if you’ve seen how large »

Detective Darcy (Kym Jackson) has a violent encounter with the possessed in our exclusive clip from Padraig Reynolds's The Devil's Dolls, coming out in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms today from IFC Midnight.

"A serial killer’s curse unleashes a season of slaughter in the backwoods of Mississippi. According to an ancient Guatemalan tradition, parents teach their children to allay their troubles by telling them to handmade “worry dolls” just before bedtime. But when several of these talismans—which once belonged to a notorious mass murderer—find their way into the hands of unsuspecting residents of a small Southern town, it sets off a grisly wave of bloodshed. The latest from Rites of Spring director Padraig Reynolds is a voodoo-slasher shocker bursting with scarily inventive kills.  Christopher Wiehl, Kym Jackson, and Tina Lifford star.

Q&A with The Devil’S Dolls Director Padraig Reynolds

15 September 2016 9:09 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

A serial killer's violent impulses live on through voodoo in The Devil's Dolls, coming out in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms on September 16th, and we caught up with director Padraig Reynolds in our latest Q&A feature to discuss the making of his southern-set horror movie.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Padraig. What attracted you to the story of The Devil’s Dolls?

Padraig Reynolds: I’m a big fan of voodoo films such as Serpent and the Rainbow and Venom. So when I read The Devil’s Dolls, I thought it would be a great opportunity to do something fresh and exciting in a genre that not too many movies are made about.

Christopher Wiehl co-wrote, produced, and stars in the film. What was it like working with Wiehl, who seemed very invested in the character of Matt? »

Review: Could OWN's 'Queen Sugar' be TV's next great family drama?

5 September 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Other than Sundance's "Rectify," no recent TV drama has been as comfortable in silence as "Queen Sugar," the new OWN family drama created by 'Selma' director Ava DuVernay, adapting the novel by Natalie Baszile. The series lingers over moments that other shows might feel compelled to rush through, or fill with dialogue out of fear the audience might grow bored or not understand what's running through the character's minds. DuVernay appreciates the power of those silences, and the ways they can make a moment feel sexier, or more unsettling, or more powerful than if everyone on-screen was constantly articulating his or her thoughts. So many of the series' emotions are conveyed through gestures, tight close-ups, or simply showing one of the regulars going through their daily routine

As a result, "Queen Sugar" — about a trio of adult siblings who attempt to run their family's sugarcane farm in rural Louisiana after »
