Johnny Depp has starred in his fair share of bizarre and quirky roles over the past decade or so, and now the talented producer/actor has added another dash of whimsy to his schedule. THR reports that Depp will produce and may star in Mortimer Wintergreen, a magical adventure film from Warner Bros. based on Myron Levoy's 1987 young adult novel The Magic Hat of Mortimer Wintergreen. Susanna White (Nanny McPhee Returns) will direct from a script by playwright and author Jack Thorne with Depp playing the title character, a travelling magician who meets two young children who have run away from their evil aunt. With his production company Infinitum Nihil, Johnny Depp has been tackling a string of ambitious adaptations, from Martin Scorsese's 3D spectacle Hugo, to Bruce Robinson's zany The Rum Diary, Tim Burton's outlandish Dark Shadows, and Gore Verbinski's forthcoming The Lone Ranger. With the latest of these finally wrapped, Depp is and company are moving forward on an adaptation of Myron Levoy's 1987 Ya novel The Magic Hat of Mortimer Wintergreen, which focuses on the misadventures Wintergreen and a brother-sister pair of runaways have thanks to his magical hat with a mind of its own. Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams are already on board, and Louis C.K., who will also appear in Woody Allen's next film (Blue Jasmine) is now the latest to join the cast. Playwright and UK "Skins" scribe Jack Thorne has been hired to pen the family fantasy adventure "Mortimer Wintergreen" at Warner Bros. Pictures.

A loose adaptation of Myron Levoy's 1987 young-adult novel "The Magic Hat of Mortimer Wintergreen," the story is set in the 1890s.

The book followed a brother and sister who run away from their mean aunt and cross paths with a traveling magician with a magical hat. The three find themselves on a series of wild adventures.

Susanna White ("Nanny McPhee Returns") is directing while Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski and John Carls are producing. Depp might star depending upon script approval and his schedule.

A double dose of Depp this morning for you. Following news that Pirates 5 has taken on a screenwriter to hasten its voyage to the big screen, another Johnny Depp project, Mortimer Wintergreen, has also hired a writer. This one has gone British with Skins and This Is England '86 (and '88) co-writer Jack Thorne scoring the gig for Depp's Infinitum Nihil marque.Thorne will be magicking Myron Levoy's young adult novel, The Magic Hat Of Mortimer Wintergreen, into a script that may even star Depp himself, depending on timings and screenplay approval.
