Sony Pictures Classics will acquire the North American rights to Wong Kar-wai's film 2046, the studio said Tuesday. Starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai (Hero), Ziyi Zhang, (House of Flying Daggers), Gong Li (Farewell My Concubine) and Maggie Cheung (Hero), 2046 is Wong's first feature film since the award-winning In the Mood for Love four years ago. It features cinematography by Christopher Doyle and editing, art design and costumes by William Chang Suk-Ping. 2046 premiered In Competition at last year's Festival de Cannes and already has opened in a number of markets worldwide. The film will have its U.S. premiere at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, with a general release in the fall. »

Multifaceted H.K. expo begins

HONG KONG -- The first Hong Kong Entertainment Expo kicked off Monday in a celebratory mood as high-profile industry figures mingled with local celebrities such as Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung and Chow Yun-fat. Also raising the event's profile was the attendance of newly appointed chief executive of Hong Kong, Donald Tsang. The Expo will run from March 22 to April 6 and comprises eight events: Filmart, the Hong Kong International Film Festival; the Hong Kong Film Awards; the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum; the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Excellence Awards; the International Federation of Phonographic Industry Hong Kong Top Sales Music Awards; the Digital Media Entertainment Leadership Forum; and the Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards. Filmart, the HKIFF, the HKFA and the HAF will be the mainstays of the Expo, which is being facilitated by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, organizer of Filmart and HAF. »

'Kung Fu' hustles Bauhinia nod

HONG KONG -- Columbia Pictures' Kung Fu Hustle garnered best film honors at the Hong Kong Film Critics Assn.'s 10th annual Golden Bauhinia Awards on Sunday. Kung Fu Hustle also scored a supporting actor nod for actor Yuen Wah for his role as a Tai Chi master. The film was also named one of the year's top 10 Chinese-language movies. Kung Fu Hustle, about a wannabe gangster who finally turns his martial arts talents to saving others, is the highest-grossing Chinese-language film in Hong Kong. Hustle helmer Stephen Chow was bested in the director category by Derek Yee, who won for his dark crime drama One Nite in Mongkok, while 2046 star Tony Leung took home the best actor award. The nod for best actress went to Rene Liu for her performance in Feng Xiaogang's World Without Thieves. »
