Fast & Furious 8: Straight Outta Compton Director Will Drive

8 October 2015 11:53 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Universal Pictures

After some furious speculation, Straight Outta Compton’s F Gary Gray has been confirmed to direct the eighth addition to the Fast & Furious franchise. How odd those words would have all sounded together 8 years ago…

The hot talent – who is apparently also under consideration for Marvel’s Black Panther in 2018 – apparently beat The Signal’s Will Eubank, The Guest’s Adam Wingard and Louis Leterrier, as well as killing rumours that Vin Diesel wanted either Rob Cohen or himself to direct.

Just two days after Diesel posted on Facebook that he has met with the director (but not cut a deal), Gary Gray took to Twitter to confirm his official hiring:

Straight Outta Compton’s F. Gary Gray Officially Directing Furious 8

8 October 2015 11:40 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

When first we checked in on Furious 8's search for a director, Universal was wary of Vin Diesel taking the job himself. And when we last checked in, Diesel was promising to reveal the choice on his Facebook page, leading to fears that he would indeed pull a Dick Cheney. Now THR reports that's unlikely to be the case, as the studio has landed on Straight Outta Compton's F. Gary Gray for the gig. Gray was one of three filmmakers short-listed for the job alongside The Transporter's Louis Leterrier and You're Next's Adam Wingard; his filmography also includes A Man Apart with Vin Diesel and The Italian Job with Jason Statham. It's like he was part of the family already. It's official, kids: This post has been updated throughout. »

Diesel is back to star along with Dwayne Johnson, Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson. Jason Statham and Kurt Russell are also expected to return.

Diesel is also producing along with Neal Moritz.

Universal, along with Diesel and Moritz, were focused on the search for their next director after “Furious 7” helmer James Wan decided not to helm the eighth installment. Universal went back to Justin Lin, who had previously helmed four of the installments, »

F. Gary Gray Looks Set To Direct Fast & Furious 8

8 October 2015 10:18 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Update: As Gray himself tweets below, this is now official, and Gray has taken the job. Following an unusually protracted search, it looks very much as if Fast & Furious 8 has finally found its director. One of those 'director shortlist' stories emerged overnight, suggesting that F. Gary Gray, Louis Leterrier (The Transporter), William Eubank (The Signal) , Ericson Core (the Point Break remake), Adam Wingard (You're Next) and original F&F helmer Rob Cohen were all in the mix. But while nothing has yet been officially announced, Vin Diesel's posting of the above picture - of himself and Gray with a pinboard of F&F images between them - on his megahorn Facebook page very much suggests that Gray is the winner.Gray is coming off the hit Nwa biopic Straight Outta Compton, and has previous with Diesel, having directed him in the action drama A Man Apart in 2003. ‘Straight Outta Compton’ director set for ‘Furious 8’ next

7 October 2015 5:17 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

From the streets of Compton to the cars of the Dubai….and London….and Rio….and Los Angeles.

Following the recent success of Straight Outta Compton, director F. Gary Gray is moving to one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood as The Hollywood Reporter reports that he is set to direct Furious 8 next. This comes a week after a report that Universal was struggling to find someone to take it over with fear star Vin Diesel would want to direct also.

According to the report, Gray beat out Louis Leterrier, Adam Wingard, and William Eubank for the job. Leterrier would’ve been a safe pick after he made two successful franchise films with The Incredible Hulk and Now You See Me. Eubank is a small director with two credits — Love and The Signal — to his name at this point.

The most interesting choice would’ve been Wingard, who directed »

Four Directors Considered for Fast and Furious 8

7 October 2015 1:33 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Justin Lin has no plans to return to the "Fast and Furious" franchise and apparently neither does director James Wan, who made "Furious 7" one of the highest grossing movies of all time. According to Variety, Universal Pictures is now considering several directors to take over the franchise, including F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), Adam Wingard (The Guest), Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) and Will Eubank (The Signal). Vin Diesel will also have a say in who will direct the eighth film. Just recently, he hinted that the job may go to Rob Cohen, who directed the first installment. Production is set to begin during spring of 2016, but pre-production will get going later this month. The studio would prefer to have a director on board by that time. »

'Fast and Furious 8' in Talks with 'Straight Outta Compton' Director

6 October 2015 3:52 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Yesterday, a report surfaced that Universal Pictures has narrowed its Fast & Furious 8 director search down to four candidates, F. Gary Gray, Adam Wingard, Louis Leterrier and William Eubank. While principal photography on Fast & Furious 8 isn't expected to begin until next spring, pre-production is slated to begin at the end of this month, and the studio was expected to make their decision very quickly. Variety reports that F. Gary Gray has been selected to take the helm, and while Universal hasn't confirmed the report, star-producer Vin Diesel posted a photo of himself and the filmmaker on his Facebook page.

This news comes less than a week after Vin Diesel himself said that he wants Rob Cohen, who directed the first movie in the franchise, 2001's The Fast and the Furious, to come back for Fast & Furious 8. The actor said that his late co-star Paul Walker always wanted him »

Fast And Furious 8: Straight Outta Compton's F. Gary Grey Enters Exclusive Talks To Take Over Franchise

6 October 2015 9:25 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

After, what, a day of speculation on which director would take over the franchise, THR is reporting that Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray has entered into exclusive talks with Universal to take over the 'we can print our own money' Fast and Furious franchise. Gray looks to have beat out other short list directors Louis Leterrier, William Eubank and oddly enough The Guest's Adam Wingard. Gray has worked with Vin Diesel in the past, on the 2003 action film A Man Apart. Gray's other work in the action-thriller genre include The Italian Job, The Negotiator and Law Abiding Citizen. Diesel met with Gray yesterday and took the picture which you see above and posted on his Facebook page. F. Gary Gray To Direct 'Furious 8,' Eyed By Marvel For 'Black Panther'

6 October 2015 7:10 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

For a guy who has been away from the filmmaking game for six years, F. Gary Gray is making a heckuva comeback. This summer, the director was behind the camera on the smash hit "Straight Outta Compton," his first movie since 2009's "Law Abiding Citizen," and the success of the movie has opened some pretty big doors. Mere hours after it was announced that he was shortlisted for the job alongside Louis Leterrier, Adam Wingard, and William Eubank, THR revealed very late last night that Gray was chosen and entered talks with Universal to direct "Furious 8." It's not a big surprise given Gray was already on Universal's radar thanks to 'Compton,' and he's got blockbuster experience under his belt as well, particularly in the realm of making cars move, as he showed with 2003's "The Italian Job." Meanwhile, Variety reports that Gray is also a contender for "Black Panther" over at Marvel, »

F. Gary Gray, Louis Leterrier and Adam Wingard rumoured to direct Fast & Furious 8

More news on the next film in the Fast & Furious franchise, with reports from both The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter about who may be stepping into the director’s chair for the new installment.

The Wrap have reported that Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray is in pole position to take over from Fast 7‘s James Wan, who has moved away from the film to direct Warner Brothers and DC’s Aquaman.

Straight Outta Compton was another in a long line of massive successes for Universal Pictures, who are behind the Fast franchise, and see Gray as the ideal replacement. The director has brought us such films as The Italian Job, The Negotiator and A Man Apart, with the latter starring Vin Diesel.

Fast & Furious 8 has director shortlist, F Gary Gray favourite

5 October 2015 11:23 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As the hunt for a director to Fast & Furious 8 continues, the search is now down to four potential names, it's revealed...

We recently heard the strange story that one of the biggest franchises on the planet is struggling to find a director. With Fast & Furious 7 breaking the $1.5bn barrier and its sequel pegged for a 2017 release, The Hollywood Reporter suggested that Universal had offered Fast 8 to several filmmakers - who'd all turned it down.

James Wan, Justin Lin and Jaume Collet-Serra were all offered the Fast 8 gig, and all passed because they had other plans - Wan has Robotech and Aquaman, Lin has Star Trek Beyond, and Collet-Serra appears to be busy with The Shallows, which has something to do with a shark.

With the clock ticking on a huge, stunt-heavy production, Universal has, according to Variety, drawn up a shortlist of potential directors - and there's some interesting choices on here, »

F. Gary Gray Enters Talks To Direct "Furious 8"

5 October 2015 11:10 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

F. Gary Gray ("Straight Outta Compton," "The Italian Job") appears to have beaten out Adam Wingard ("The Guest"), Louis Leterrier ("Now You See Me") and Will Eubank ("The Signal") for the job of helming the eighth film in the "Fast and Furious" franchise.

Yesterday Variety revealed the four who had met with Universal about the gig. With Justin Lin committed to "Star Trek Beyond" and James Wan turning down a lucrative offer to return to the franchise a few weeks ago, the hunt began for a new director.

Though Vin Diesel had suggested himself or Rob Cohen in social media postings about the issue, the studio reportely never took that idea into consideration. Gray seemed the best fit, but there was said to be concern over a potential conflict with Marvel's "Black Panther" film for which he's also a contender.

'Furious 8' Shortlist Includes 'Straight Outta Compton' Director

5 October 2015 5:15 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last week, Fast & Furious franchise star Vin Diesel revealed that a director will be announced soon for Fast & Furious 8. Furious 7 director James Wan has moved on to direct The Conjuring: The Enfield Poltergeist, and Justin Lin, who directed the last four Fast & Furious movies before that, is currently shooting Star Trek Beyond. Today, Variety reports that Universal Pictures has narrowed their directorial choice down to four candidates, F. Gary Gray, Adam Wingard, Louis Leterrier and William Eubank.

The report claims that none of these four filmmakers have emerged as the front runner yet, but the studio is reportedly close to making their final decision. Variety also reports that there is no truth to rumors that Vin Diesel may be in the mix to direct Fast & Furious 8 himself. Louis Leterrier And More Up For Fast & Furious 8 Directing Job

5 October 2015 4:53 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Just last week, Vin Diesel was using his Facebook foghorn to counter reports that the eighth Fast & Furious entry was having trouble locking down a director. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, there are several candidates racing towards the finish line, with Louis Leterrier, F. Gary Gray and Adam Wingard all in contention. Deadline also throws in The Signal’s William Eubank, though THR says his name came up earlier in the search, so he may already have dropped out.Wingard, who made You’re Next and The Guest, seems the most interesting of the three main contenders, especially given his background in horror and thrillers, which would make him the second director after James Wan to jump from scares to screeching tyres. He could certainly bring his own style to the film, though we do wonder if he’s better off doing just that, and not going the studio franchise route. »

F. Gary Gray Reportedly on Shortlist of 3 Directors for 'Furious 8'

Update: The search for a director for the next "Fast & Furious" movie has apparently come down to a list of 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter this evening: F. Gary Gray, Louis Leterrier, and Adam Wingard. The trio are to meet with star Vin Diesel. So, at some point in the near or distant future, one of these 3 gents could very well be announced as director of the 8th film in the successful franchise. Whoever it is just might have a trilogy on their hands, given what Diesel shared last week (see below). Gray is of course coming off the global box office smash "Straight Outta Compton." Straight Outta Compton Director Emerges As Frontrunner To Helm Fast And Furious 8

The hunt for a filmmaker to direct Fast and Furious 8 has been interesting to say the least, especially as there have been some worrying rumblings that Vin Diesel might use his power as a producer to end up placing himself in the director’s chair (something which Universal apparently weren’t even remotely keen on happening).

Well, a new report now reveals that F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) has emerged as the frontrunner to take the helm of the action franchise, which grossed $1 billion worldwide for the first time with Fast and Furious 7 earlier this year.

Adam Wingard, Louis Leterrier & F. Gary Gray Shortlisted For ‘Furious 8’

Well, that narrative turned around fast. As talks swirled that Universal was having trouble locking down a director for "Furious 8," and that Vin Diesel might want to do it himself, the official line from everybody was that they were waiting for the script to come in before formally going out to any directors. Well, either that screenplay came in over the weekend or everyone is locking to get ahead of the story as a shortlist has now arrived for next helmers to make the cars go boom. THR reports that Adam Wingard, Louis Leterrier, and F. Gary Gray are the final contenders to helm the picture. Wingard would be the least experienced in terms of making pictures on this scale, but he's easily the buzziest of the bunch, as the director of the cult faves "You're Next" and "The Guest."
