2016 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding TV Movie

29 June 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Quick Hits

• Last Year’s Winner: “Bessie”

• Was It an Upset? Nope • Hot Streak: HBO has won this category nine years in a row…

• Fun Fact: …but the network lost when the category merged with miniseries in 2011. The show that beat it? The PBS entry “Downton Abbey,” which would later be deemed a drama series, and thus, would have been ineligible the only year HBO has lost since 2004.

When it comes to the Emmys, no network can even compare to HBO. Consistently topping 100 nominations per year (and the only network to ever approach that number), the premium cable giant has ruled one category more than most: Outstanding TV Movie. Over the past nine years, no other network has been able to topple an offering from HBO, including last year’s winner “Bessie,” and »

Quick Hits

Last Year’s Winner: Regina King, “American Crime” Was It an Upset? Yes. Vegas money was on Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story”) or Mo’nique (“Bessie”). Still Eligible? Yes Hot Streak: Kathy Bates has the most nominations in this category of any actress ever, with six nods spanning from 1996 to 2015. Fun Fact: Olivia Cole was the first black actress to be nominated in this category and the first black actress to win. Her role? Mathilda in “Roots,” a miniseries being remade in 2016.

Last year, in a crowded field made up of three “American Horror Story” nominees and two major HBO players, it was the talented Regina King who took home the gold for ABC’s “American Crime.” Technically, the same thing could happen again in 2016, though the field is a bit more competitive than it was a year ago. For starters, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson and Angela Bassett »

Oliver Stone Talks ‘Snowden’ Financing Struggle, Film vs. TV and Military ‘Adulation’ in Movies

25 June 2016 11:28 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Nantucket, Mass. — Oliver Stone pulled no punches and named names in detailing the struggle to finance his new movie about National Security Administration whistleblower Edward Snowden during a Q&A Saturday with fellow director Bennett Miller.

During the wide-ranging discussion, held as part of the Nantucket Film Festival, Stone also weighed in on his lack of enthusiasm for most serialized TV dramas, his disdain for the “adulation” of the U.S. military in many contemporary films and how Dino De Laurentiis dashed his hopes for “Conan the Barbarian” to have blossomed as a long-running franchise.

The intimate gathering at a private home on the water included actor Zachary Quinto, who plays journalist Glenn Greenwald in “Snowden,” and numerous writer-directors with pics at the fest, such as Mike Birbiglia (“Don’t Think Twice”), Julia Hart (“Miss Stevens”), Clay Tweel (“Gleason”) and Chris Kelly (“Other People”). ‘All the Way’: How Jay Roach’s Approach to Collaboration Led to Something ‘Joyous’

Jay Roach for President.

HBO’s gripping docudrama “All the Way” chronicled the ruthlessness of American politics, as captured within a tumultuous eight months during the term of President Lyndon B. Johnson. But behind the scenes, under Roach’s administration, the production couldn’t have been more idyllic.

In the movie, Johnson fights hard to bring more equality to America. On set, Roach, who directed the film, was effortless in creating a more perfect union.

“Jay is like this with everybody,” Bradley Whitford, who played Hubert Humphrey, told IndieWire. “He doesn’t treat the craft services guy any differently than he treats me. One of my pet peeves about Hollywood is that it’s full of lefty, ‘fancy yourself a humanist’ liberals like me and then you get on a movie set and it’s like a 15th century serfdom. People are treating other people like shit because they’re »

Exclusive: ‘Wayward Pines’ Reveals the Makeup For Making a Monster

22 June 2016 9:37 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Season 2 of Fox’s “Wayward Pines” has gone deeper into the backstory behind the human aberrations, or “Abbies,” that terrorize the town. In an exclusive clip, makeup effects designer Bill Terezakis reveals the four hour process of prosthetics and makeup that goes into the creation of the Abbies.

Terezakis explains that he is wary of making the Abbies too monstrous: “I think if we were to go any other route, we would lose the humanity of the characters, and that is going to be quite evident and needed in Season 2. We have to be able to identify with them in some degree, and I think Season 2 will be more of an eye opener as to why these characters are more on the human side as opposed to the monster side, and why in fact they became monsters.”

Tonight’s episode, “Sound The Alarm,” will go deeper into the backstory of the Abbies. »

That opens the cateogry to a whole new winner, and it might just be someone who will be doubling up on noms this year. Ellen Burstyn [“Mom”] is also a potential nominee for her work on the drama “House of Cards,” as is Carrie Fisher [“Catastrophe”] for “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.” Tovah Feldshuh stole the show with her “Where’s the Bathroom” number in “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” but could also score a nod on the drama side for her guest work on ‘The Walking Dead.”
