Super Troopers was released in 2001 and rumors of a sequel have followed it ever since. I swear every year there's two or three news articles with a quote from some member of Broken Lizard saying the script was done or how they are still interesting in slapping on their Vermont State Trooper badges. It looks like a sequel to the 2001 cult comedy Super Troopers may be ready to shoot later this year if Broken Lizard's Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme are to be believed. Heffernan was quoted as saying: “We wrote the script and handed it in to Fox, and now we’re just negotiating the time and the place and hopefully shoot it some time this year. I have to start growing my mustache now." This would certainly come as some good news for fans of the hilarious original picture, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, that centered on a group of Vermont state troopers . The big thing holding up the sequel to the cult comedy Super Troopers hasn't been scheduling conflicts or creative issues, but rather legal problems. The Broken Lizard troupe, which features the talents of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske, has spent years trying to make a follow-up to their most well-known film, but due to a rights issue involving the original development has been stalled. The last time we got an update was in July of last year, but today we learn that the woes seem to over over and that the green light has been lit. A sequel to the 2001 cult comedy hit "Super Troopers" could begin shooting as early as this year, according to Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme, two-fifths of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe. Broken Lizard, formed at New York's Colgate University in 1990, has written and starred in such films as "Super Troopers," "Club Dread" and "Beerfest," all of which member Jay Chandrasekhar directed. It's kind of amazing that the world has yet to see a sequel to Super Troopers. Sure, Broken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind it all, never saw quite the same the critical and box office success after its cop comedy hit the scene back in 2002 (though Beerfest came close in the box office department), but that just makes the film's nonexistence all the more anomalous. You'd think that after a few films failed to hit, the troupe would fall back into the safety net that is Super Troopers, but despite rumblings over the years that the members had ideas for it, that never happened.
