Extended Thoughts on ‘The Santa Clause 2′

The Santa Clause 2

Directed by Michael Lembeck

Written by Don Rhymer, Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio, Ed Decter, John J. Strauss

Starring Tim Allen, Elizabeth Mitchell, Spencer Breslin, David Krumholtz, Judge Reinhold, Eric Lloyd

Why wait eight years between the original Santa Clause and its follow-up, The Santa Clause 2? This is a question I’ve been asking myself over the last week, before I watched the film for our podcast, during our recording, and now. I didn’t bring it up on the show, because I imagine the question would’ve just floated out into virtual nothingness. But I wonder. The first film opened in November of 1994 to moderate critical acclaim and strong box office returns. I honestly don’t remember how “angry” I might’ve sounded on the podcast last year (Gabe described me as such in our discussion this week), but when my wife puts the original on,

Emma Watson to Star in Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring'

If I was to grade this casting decision I would have to give it an A. It's hard to imagine a better director for Emma Watson to team-up with as she begins her post-Harry Potter career than Sofia Coppola. Coppola was directed the likes of Kirsten Dunst (The Virgin Suicides), Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation) and recently Elle Fanning (Somewhere) to excellent performances in films that warrant more than one sitting is not several and Watson will be the latest as Variety reports she's been cast in the lead role of Coppola's The Bling Ring. The film will be shot on location in Los Angeles and will tell the true story of the titular group who are also known as the "Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch," "The Burglar Bunch" or the "Hollywood Hills Burglars". Already Michael Lembeck (Tooth Fairy, The Santa Clause 3) directed a made-for-tv movie with the same name that

The Time That Remains (15)

(Elia Suleiman, 2009, UK/Ita/Fra/Bel) Elia Suleiman, Saleh Bakri, Samar Tanus, Shafika Bajjali. 110 mins

As he did in 2002's Divine Intervention, Suleiman fashions Middle East tensions into something resembling a deadpan arthouse sketch show at times, but the stylised comedy is folded into 60 years of family history this time. The first portion is particularly striking, dealing with the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and Suleiman's father's part in it as a Palestinian resistance fighter. As time and relatives move on, the story becomes more reflective and fragmented, but elegant choreography and tender observation hold it together.

Sex And The City 2 (15)

(Michael Patrick King, 2010, Us) Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon. 146 mins

Us-Arab relations get a stiletto in the eye, as the foursome descend on Abu Dhabi in this overlong but doubtless unstoppable sequel, adding Islamophobic cultural challenges to their perpetual relationship/ageing/wardrobe issues.

Tooth Fairy

Stars: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Ashley Judd, Chase Ellison, Destiny Whitlock, Julie Andrews, Stephen Merchant | Written by Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel | Directed by Michael Lembeck

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as Derek Thompson, a slightly past-it ice hockey player whose propensity for knocking out the molars of his opponents on the rink has earned him the nickname of ‘The Tooth Fairy’.
