10 Crucial George Segal Roles Beyond ‘The Goldbergs’

10 Crucial George Segal Roles Beyond ‘The Goldbergs’
George Segal rode talent and a hot streak to the top of the movie heap from the mid-1960s into the 1980s. If you only know Segal for his popular TV series “Just Shoot Me” and “The Goldbergs,” here are crucial earlier roles to check out.

King Rat (1965), dir. Bryan Forbes:

This was a break-out role for Segal, a prestigious WWII drama with a mostly British cast that included John Mills, Tom Courtenay, James Fox, Patrick O’Neal, and Denholm Elliott. Segal played a charismatically amoral American sharpie, scrambling to maintain his place at the top of the black-market heap in a Japanese prison camp.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), dir. Mike Nichols:

Segal earned his lone Oscar nomination for this role, in Nichols’ adaptation of Edward Albee’s stinging marital drama. He brought brains and vulnerability as a college professor who, with his mousy wife (Sandy Dennis

Films For Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day celebrates working people and the labor unions that brought working people the 40-hour work week, the 8-hour day, overtime pay, work-place safety, paid holidays and vacations, and a host of other protections and benefits. To honor those hard-working people and organized labor, here is a list (in no particular order) of a dozen worthy narrative films for Labor Day.

Norma Rae (1979)

For many people, the words “labor union” bring to mind the image of Sally Field standing up in defiance in “Norma Rae.” Field won an Oscar for her unforgettable, inspiring character, a worker in a Southern textile factory who becomes involved in labor organizing and stands up to management after the factory workers’ health is threatened in the workplace. This stirring drama, based on a true story, also stars Beau Bridges as Norma Rae’s husband Sonny and Ron Leibman as an union organizer from the Northeast.

Remembering Sidney Lumet

April 9th will mark the four year anniversary of director Sidney Lumet's passing, at age 86. Lumet was the first director I interviewed whose one-sheet posters hung on my wall as a kid. He was an idol, an icon, and an inspiration. I wasn't yet 30 in April 1997, when I met him at The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for our interview at the press junket for "Night Falls On Manhattan," one of his solid, authentic urban dramas that blended crime, politics and personal revelations that became his signature.

Lumet immediately put any butterflies I had at ease. Diminutive, but with the infectious energy of a teenager, his was a disarming presence. He paid me a compliment on my sportcoat, saying that I looked a bit like the young Mickey Rourke (which I still don't see, but what the hell), then went on to regale me for an hour with

Exclusive ‘Archer Vice’ Interview: Jessica Walter Walks The Talk

In this wild and wacky season of Archer Vice, Isis matriarch, Malory (Jessica Walter) has endured her role as the plot pusher, but she’s also taken more of a supportive role this season. That doesn’t mean she hasn’t had her set of conflicts to deal with. She is desperately trying to find a way to make money off of the shit-ton of cocaine they have stashed in the Tunt Manor, but it’s dwindling because Pam (Amber Nash) keeps eating it. Now she has been forced her to milk what she can of Cheryl’s (Judy Greer) talents singing country songs as her latest alter ego, Cherlene.

If that’s not enough, Malory has also been dumped by her husband, Ron Cadillac (played by Walter’s real life husband, Ron Leibman), is reminding Lana (Aisha Tyler) of the mistake she has growing in her belly and for

Archer 5.3, Archer Vice: A Debt Of Honor Review

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

You would think that the remnants of an international espionage agencies would intuitively know a thing or two about street crime and drug dealing. Unfortunately for the crew of Isis, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

A Debt of Honor picks up pretty much exactly where A Kiss While Dying left off, with the Isis crew trying to figure out what to do with the $1 million in counterfeit money they got for their 20 kilos of cocaine. Pam ends up using it to by amphetamines from the Yakuza, with whom she has a longstanding history, as documented in the third season episode Drift Problem.

Therefore, like A Kiss While Dying, the antagonist of this episode is a repeat from an earlier season. I’m sure there are some new faces in store for this fifth season of Archer, but it’s a somewhat bizarre decision

"Archer" returns to FX tonight and the first four episodes are, well, classic "Archer."

(In case you're not caught up, Season 3 of "Archer" is available on DVD right now -- it's worth checking out for a few storylines that come back in the new episodes.)

If you're worried about spoilers, stop reading now, but we tried not to spoil the fun.

1) You won't wait long for the "Bob's Burgers" crossover

Season 4 opens with the much-anticipated "Bob's Burgers" crossover, as Archer has a Jason Bourne-style case of amnesia and believes he's Bob Belcher from the Fox animated comedy. In case you're not aware of the connection: H. Jon Benjamin voices both Archer and Bob.

‘Archer’ Panel Destroys Indigo Ballroom at Comic-Con With Laugh Riot

FX gave San Diego Comic-Con one mean trick and a whole lotta treats at their Archer panel, but everyone left with their cheeks sore from laughing. A warning to the light-hearted readers, this write-up contains a large amount of vulgarity.

The one trick was an exclusive clip of Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) about to hanglide off the edge of a massive canyon, speaking to the Comic-Con crowd and insulting them for the vast amount of virgins in the house. The clip also showed Archer willing to speak freely about Season 4 spoilers and all that’s happened since the Season 3 finale that occurred in space. But because Archer was high atop a windy canyon, with his spirit animal (a bald eagle) the gusts of wind were so strong that none of the juicy details could be heard.

Editor’S Pick: Beware of H. Jon Benjamin Lurking in Your Elevator

“Goddammit, this shit is hurting my face…

Jeremy Shamos on 'Angels in America: Millennium Approaches'

  • Backstage
On our first day of technical rehearsals last month, the cast of "Clybourne Park" entered the Walter Kerr Theatre. The seven of us sat in the house, quietly taking this moment in. It is fitting that we call theaters "houses" because -- like the one in our play -- houses contain history and "ghosts." As I sat there, I couldn't help thinking of the incredible, mind-boggling experience I had in the same theater almost 20 years ago.It was 1993 when I entered the Kerr as a young aspiring actor and got to see Kathleen Chalfant, David Marshall Grant, Marcia Gay Harden, Ron Leibman, Joe Mantelllo, Ellen McLaughlin, Stephen Spinella, and Jeffrey Wright perform in George Wolfe's production of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America: Millennium Approaches."I remember vividly (and viscerally) knowing, from the very first scene when Kathleen Chalfant as an elderly male rabbi gives a eulogy, that I was experiencing.
