Newswire: Donnie Yen wants to start a Sleeping Dogs film franchise

3 March 2017 2:58 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

2012’s open-world action game Sleeping Dogs is mostly remembered for being gaming’s latest attempt to nail down the John Wu-esque blend of Hong Kong gunplay and high-stakes kung fu (and for featuring Emma Stone in a supporting role). Now, Rogue One star Donnie Yen wants to revive the gaming franchise as a series of action films.

Sleeping Dogs centers on Wei Shen (played by Will Yun Lee in the game), an undercover cop infiltrating Hong Kong’s Triad gangs. Yen—who made his name in stuff like the Ip Man films and other Hong Kong fare, and whose most recent credit is xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage—would take over the role of Shen for the film, which would presumably involve a lot of shooting people, sliding acrobatically over tables, and kicking folks in the face.

Sleeping Dogs Movie In The Works With Rogue One’s Donnie Yen Attached To Star

3 March 2017 6:13 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The future of Sleeping Dogs is questionable at best, particularly after the closure of United Front Games and subsequent cancellation of Triad Wars and the ambitious, embryonic sequel, Sleeping Dogs 2.

But just because a property fails in one medium doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t succeed in another; Deadline is reporting that Original Film and Square Enix – the publishing house behind United Front Games – have struck a deal for a live-action movie based on Sleeping Dogs, and it’s currently courting Chinese superstar Donnie Yen to headline. Best known as the IP Man, Yen has found international success recently through the likes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and action threequel xXx: Return of Xander Cage – two Hollywood tentpoles that fared remarkably well in China thanks to the inclusion of the actor.

With Sleeping Dogs, Yen will have an opportunity to circle back to his roots. Chronicling the journey of Wei Shen, »
