Buyers back as MIPCOM opens

13 October 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

CANNES -- It fell on a weekend, the sun shone, and everybody bitched about having to work. But the fact was that the MIPCOM television market looks like it's turning out to have been a solid place for business as the promise of a little optimism returning to the marketplace was largely fulfilled. The message from everywhere is that purse strings are under tight control, which was borne out by the scarcity along the Croisette of billboard ads for programming. But companies were still prepared, however, to splash some cash on entertaining, and the early pace of cocktails and dinners was intense. A bash Wednesday night to launch DIC Entertainment's new animated series Stan Lee's Super 7 took on the feel of a comic book convention as international execs swarmed guest of honor Stan Lee, asking for autographs from the legendary creator of Spider-Man, The Hulk, X-Men and Daredevil. »

Ex-Stripper Sues Pamela Anderson

10 July 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A former stripper is suing buxom babe Pamela Anderson over her cartoon series, Stripperella. The former Baywatch star provides the voice of the animated stripper, who moonlights as a superhero. However, Janet Clover, 37, of Florida, America, claims she is the "true creator" of the series and has also filed suit against Stan Lee, who created the character, as well as Viacom TV Networks who are screening it. Clover writes, "This office challenges Lee to produce proof of his creative work, as true authorship belongs to Tanga's Jazz. I'm just trying to get this off TV because it's not his idea." Tanga's Jazz is the adult club where Clover claims she asked Lee about the Stripperella concept during a private dance session. Anderson's agent declined to comment while Viacom were unavailable. »

'Superhero' is real deal at WB

2 April 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

The WB Network is looking for the Spider-Men and Incredible Hulks of the future. The network has ordered six episodes of Who Wants to Be a Superhero? -- a tongue-in-cheek fantasy contest show from reality guru Bruce Nash (Meet My Folks) and comic pioneer Stan Lee -- for the 2003-04 season. In the series, real people with homegrown ideas for original superheroes will face off in character before a panel of celebrity judges who have played onscreen superheroes. Semifinalists will undergo a "superhero makeover" -- with a professional artistic gloss overseen by Spider-Man creator Lee -- and compete in various stunts and challenges that mimic comic book derring-do. The winner will then be eligible to have his or her idea developed and expanded by Lee's team, possibly for a comic book spinoff. The producers will conduct and film open auditions around the country in coming weeks. »
