Michael B. Jordan on ‘Fantastic Four’ Casting Backlash: I’ll ‘Shoulder All This Hate’

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Michael B. Jordan is responding to a backlash after being cast as Johnny Storm in the upcoming “Fantastic Four” reboot. The announcement created a stir from fans of the comic book franchise, originally created by Stan Lee.

“You’re not supposed to go on the Internet when you’re cast as a superhero,” Jordan wrote in a short essay for Entertainment Weekly. As he mentions in the article, his comic character was originally described as having blond hair and blue eyes.

“I didn’t want to be ignorant about what people were saying,” he wrote. “Turns out this is what they were saying: ‘A black guy? I don’t like it. They must be doing it because Obama’s president’ and ‘It’s not true to the comic.’ Or even, ‘They’ve destroyed it!'”

Months later, the new Human Torch says that the negative comments no longer bother him. »

Michael B. Jordan responds to criticism of his casting as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four

9 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Back at the start of the year, a section of the internet exploded with the news that black actor Michael B. Jordan had been cast as white comic book character Johnny Storm in 20th Century Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four. Jordan has spoken briefly on the backlash on several occasions [see here and here], but now with the film on the horizon, he’s penned a lengthy response over at EW:

You’re not supposed to go on the Internet when you’re cast as a superhero. But after taking on Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four—a character originally written with blond hair and blue eyes—I wanted to check the pulse out there. I didn’t want to be ignorant about what people were saying. Turns out this is what they were saying: “A black guy? I don’t like it. They must be doing it because Obama’s president” and “It »

Jordan Talks "Fantastic Four" Criticism

9 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Though it has settled down somewhat, there remains a small but determined contingent of "Fantastic Four" fans who are not happy with the casting of Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm in Fox's upcoming reboot of the property.

Though Jordan has commented on the backlash before, he has now written a lengthy response to his critics in a letter posted on EW in which he makes his feelings very clear. Here's an excerpt:

"It used to bother me, but it doesn't anymore. I can see everybody's perspective, and I know I can't ask the audience to forget 50 years of comic books. But the world is a little more diverse in 2015 than when the Fantastic Four comic first came out in 1961. Plus, if Stan Lee writes an email to my director saying, “You're good. I'm okay with this,” who am I to go against that?

'Fantastic Four' Star Michael B. Jordan Responds to Critics of Black Johnny Storm

14 hours ago | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Not everyone feels, well, fantastic about a black actor taking on the role of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the new "Fantastic Four" movie. In this re-imagining, Kate Mara plays Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Miles Teller is Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Jamie Bell is Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Michael B. Jordan is Johnny Storm, the role played by Chris Evans in the 2005 movie.

Since Johnny was originally written to be blond with blue eyes, some fans grumbled about the change to cast Michael B. Jordan. Jordan just wrote a piece for Entertainment Weekly, responding to comments like "A black guy? I don't like it. They must be doing it because Obama's president," "It's not true to the comic," and "They've destroyed it!"

Here's part of what Jordan wrote:

It used to bother me, but it doesn't anymore. I can see everybody's perspective, and I know I can't »

Mindy Newell: The Amazing Adventure Of Mohall And Newell

18 May 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

So today (Sunday, which is yesterday), Editor Mike sent me a link to a column on The Jewish Daily Forward’s website which asks the question “Do Marvel Movies Have An Anti-Semitic Problem?” – which also happens to be the dumbest article I’ve ever read on their site.

Granted, The Forward – which was born way back in 1867 as a Yiddish language daily newspaper published by dissidents from the Socialist Labor Party – is a left-leaning paper whose heart and soul is the Jewish-American experience, with strong ties to Israel, and its articles are purposely written with that audience as its primary target. And granted, The Forward has not been the only news media outlet that has noted and remarked upon the recent rebirth of overt and increasingly violent anti-Semitism around the globe, especially in Europe. And yes, The Forward should be praised in its unadulterated and unabridged journalism that consistently calls out the perpetrators. »

Khan's Dope Movie Pitch: Children Of The Atom

18 May 2015 7:31 AM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

“Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. For months, that actually feel like weeks, I have promised to reveal my take on the popular Marvel Comic book, X-Men. With school work rising to an all-time high, the pitch took a backseat to far more important things, such as wood-work and badminton. Anyway, alas, I have returned to my MacBook Air, and have decided to reveal my take on the controversial Marvel characters. Now, before we begin, let it be known that I am a huge fan of what 20th Century Fox is doing with X-Men property, and that this is just my own take.   Children Of The Atom When it came down to revamping this concept, I decided to go back to it’s original material. In Defence Of... Ang Lee's multi-million dollar psychodrama Hulk

16 May 2015 1:30 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

At the time of writing, Marvel have not yet confirmed a third standalone Hulk movie, but without giving anything away, the closing events of Avengers: Age of Ultron definitely leave that door wide open. With that in mind, it seems like the perfect time to re-appraise ol' greenskin's first big screen outing, Ang Lee's multi-million dollar psychodrama, Hulk.

Released in 2003, Hulk took a total of $132.2 million at the Us box office, just short of its reputed £137 million budget. Though it eventually took over $245 million worldwide, it was perceived as a flop, significantly under-performing compared to the likes of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man or Bryan Singer's X-Men movies. Hulk not box-office Smash, in other words. Critics weren't overly kind either – it earned 62% on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, indicating decidedly mixed reviews albeit with a positive slant.

Marvel TV: synopses for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter's next seasons

13 May 2015 12:04 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Learn more about Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 and Agent Carter season 2 here, via their new synopses (synopsises? synopsi?)...

If we've learnt one thing this morning, it's that the plural of synopsis is synopses. We did, however, also get a few clues about the next seasons of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter thanks to their new synopses. We still think synopsi sounds better, though.

Naturally, if you're not up-to-date with either show, these cast-mentioning synopses will spoil the surprise of which characters survive their respective finales. Consider yourselves warned, then.

Here's the synopsis for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3, to start with...

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for a dynamic, action-packed third season, as Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) embarks on a deadly new secret mission to protect the world from new threats in the wake of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s wars with Hydra and a rogue faction of Inhumans."

Kevin Smith reveals his Mallrats sequel will be called MallBrats

Kevin Smith has announced the title of his Mallrats sequel.

Confusingly, the follow-up to the 1995 comedy will be called MallBrats, as announced by the cult filmmaker on social media.

— KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) May 11, 2015

Smith posted a photograph of the completed script, as well as one of himself with Mallrats (and Dazed and Confused) producer Jim Jacks, who died in January 2014.

Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Jeremy London, Joey Lauren Adams, Michael Rooker and Ethan Suplee will all return for the sequel.

Comics legend and professional cameo artist Stan Lee has confirmed that he will be back in a bigger role for the sequel.

The Fantastic Film

11 May 2015 10:11 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It took 20th Century Fox 14 years, but with last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, they finally delivered the movie that X-Men fans had been impatiently waiting for since 2000. Now, in 2015, Fox hopes to revive their other, more desperate, superhero franchise with this summer’s Fantastic Four. Using the same apocalyptic tones and brooding masochism made famous by Bryan Singer’s X-Men, Fox is hoping that their third go-around with the oft-troubled franchise will prove to be the charm. But, based on the failures of previous Fantastic Four films, the barrage of trailers and press releases for the new flick, and the entire history of the comic book series, Fantastic Four may inevitably be doomed from the start.

As a series, The Fantastic Four has proven to be one of Marvel’s more inconsequential title to readers, as well as one of its most inaccessible to writers. Ever since »

'Mallrats 2' Gets Titled 'MallBrats', Script Is Finished

11 May 2015 11:33 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Kevin Smith is making good on his promise to deliver Mallrats 2 as his next film, announcing today that the first draft of the screenplay is finished and that the official title of the movie is MallBrats. While the writer/director didn't offer any new plot details, the title surely hints that the original characters will be bringing some of their children into the mix this time around. The filmmaker also used this moment to remember original Mallrats producer Jim Jacks. He says:

"20 years in the making. 113 pages fulla old friends & new jokes. This is for you, Jim. Wish you were here. #MallBrats"

Jim Jacks had always wanted to make a sequel to the original Mallrats. Saldy, he passed away a little over a year ago. His untimely death helped motivate and push to see the film become a reality. At this time, the sequel does not have a release date. »
