Leverage Review: A Break from the Norm

18 July 2011 4:42 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Nate and the team took a trip back in time to solve the mystery of a lost painting in "The Van Gogh Job."

The episode was a break from the norm, as the squad really didn't have to pull a huge con in order to service the client. Nor were we treated to a typical “whodunit." This was more of a "whereisit."

When we first meet Charlie Lawson, we see him as a peaceful old man who's come back home after being away a long time. He seems sincerely sweet and charming, revisiting memories that include his long-ago job from his younger years. Even when a stranger approaches him, accusing Charlie of something he claims he didn't do, we still believe in Danny Glover's character, though we start to worry for him.

Shortly afterwards, we meet another man named Owen, an old colleague of Nate's from his insurance days. »

Charlie Lawson prefers farming to acting. The 51-year-old star - best known for playing 'Coronation Street' rogue Jim McDonald on and off since 1989 - claims his profession has grown increasingly "boring" and is now more content to work with partner Debbie Stanley in their farm shop in Cheshire. He said: "I wouldn't say farming's taken over our lives, but it's become important to Debbie and we enjoy working together immensely. "It gives me an opportunity to say no to things that I don't want to do. Because there's nothing worse after 35 years of doing things you don't want to bloody »

Coronation Street star Charles Lawson has revealed that he is flattered by the public reaction to his character's recent armed robbery storyline. Earlier this month, fans saw Jim McDonald make a bungled attempt to hold up a bank in order to secure the cash he needed to buy the Rovers Return. Jim's latest guest stint has now drawn to a close because he is now back behind bars as he awaits trial for his crime. Since the episodes aired, a Facebook group titled "Free Jim McDonald. He's Innocent, So He Is" has attracted over 40,000 followers. Speaking to The Sun, Lawson confirmed that his partner Debbie Stanley recently alerted him to the campaign. He explained: "I knew nothing about Facebook. Debbie stumbled across it. It's very flattering and fun. I've been in this business 35 years. I'm long in the tooth and wise enough to know that (more) »

Farewell Liz

Beverley Callard has played Liz McDonald, Coronation Street's most inventively dressed matriarch, since 1989, but she's finally packing up her high heels, mini skirts and that flamenco outfit she came back from Spain with recently, and leaving the cobbles for good. This pays tribute to the actress and the character, looking at her finest moments with the help of cast members past and present, including screen husband Charlie Lawson, who has a lot to say, so he does. Essex Jungle

8pm, Channel 5

Why is it no surprise that in the county of Essex, as opposed to say, the county of Wiltshire, there are more reptiles and exotic animals kept as domestic pets in Essex than there are cats and dogs? We »

Danny Glover To Guest Star In Flashback Episode Of TNT’s “Leverage” Titled “The Van Gogh Job”

11 April 2011 8:54 AM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Danny Glover will guest star in the fifth episode of the TNT adventure drama Leverage, in the upcoming fourth season, which kicks off Sunday, June 26.

The episode will be called The Van Gogh Job, and will feature flashbacks to the 1930s and 1940s as the crew works a con.

Glover will play a WWII veteran named Charlie Lawson, who owns a Van Gogh portrait, a valuable piece of art with some mystery behind it, which he took from the Nazis; the Leverage crew works to help him recover it.

Also interestingly, the episode will be narrated by Glover’s character, so the audience will be watching the story unfold through his eyes specifically.

I’ve actually never watching an episode of Leverage, which does feature African American Aldis Hodge in its starring cast.

Any of you do? Should I be watching? Thoughts?

However, as the drama unfolds, things start to go wrong when the bank cashier secretly presses a panic button, alerting the police to Jim's crime. Explaining his alter ego's behaviour, Lawson told Hot TV magazine: "I don't think for a moment he thought, 'Right, one way I could get the pub is to rob the bank'. He is just a desperate man and he can't face telling Liz that he hasn't got the cash to buy the pub for her. "He isn't thinking about the consequences (more) »
