Gender-Fluid Actor Kelly Mantle Makes Oscar History

Opening Friday in limited release for an Oscar-qualifying run is “Confessions of a Womanizer,” directed by Miguel Ali. The small indie film is the longest of shots for Academy consideration, but that’s not stopping it from making history.

In submitting eligibility materials to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the film’s producers sought both supporting actor and supporting actress consideration for gender-fluid actor Kelly Mantle. The Academy granted the request, setting a historic precedent.

Gender-fluid and trans characters have been represented by Oscar-nominated actors such as John Lithgow (“The World According to Garp”), Hillary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”). There is one instance, meanwhile, of an Oscar nomination for a gender-swapping role: Linda Hunt in fact won the supporting actress prize for playing a male dwarf in 1982’s “The Year of Living Dangerously.”

Kelly Mantle, a gender-fluid performer who was a contestant on the sixth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” has made Oscar history as the first potential nominee eligible in both male and female categories, TheWrap has learned. Mantle plays a transgender prostitute in “Confessions of a Womanizer,” a Miguel Ali indie from Harbor House Films starring Andrew Lawrence and Gary Busey. The film’s producers ran into a dilemma when filling out Oscar paperwork, which required them to classify Mantle, who was born a man, as either male or female. Mantle was submitted for consideration in both categories, and the Academy confirmed that. »

Disney Channel stars both young and old descended on the DGA Theater in Hollywood for the network’s premiere of its 100th Disney Channel Original Movie, “Adventures in Babysitting.”

Adventures in Babysitting” stars Sabrina Carpenter, Sofia Carson and Kevin Quinn were joined by a full slate of Dcom alums, including Dove Cameron, China Anne McClain, Christy Carlson RomanoTahj Mowry as well as Joey, Matthew and Andrew Lawrence.

“I think it’s sort of surreal to say not only did I grow up with these movies, but that I was sort of a part of history somehow,” Carpenter said. “We became such a family during filming — all of the children, the director. They treated us like family and it made the experience 10 times more fun.”

The film is a reimagining of the 1987 movie of the same name, which starred Elisabeth Shue as an unlucky babysitter who spent her night chaperoning kids on an adventure throughout Chicago. The »
