Recently launched Cristal Pictures is developing and fully financing a science-fiction disaster movie with the working title “Imago” as a Chinese co-production.
Cristal has bought the “Imago” pitch from writing partners Adam Robitel (director of the upcoming “Insidious: Chapter 4”) and Gavin Heffernan (“The Taking of Deborah Logan”). The duo is writing the screenplay in which near-future scientific experiments to reverse global warming backfire with unimaginable consequences.
Beijing-based producer and Cristal Pictures founder Chris Liu said “Imago” represents the first big budget sci-fi disaster movie to be made in China as an official Chinese co-production. Plans are to cast Western as well as Chinese actors with shooting on location in and around Hong Kong.
Tuesday’s announcement by Cristal came three months the company said it would co-produce and co-finance Ryan Reynolds’ action-comedy “Hitman’s Bodyguard.” That project is in post-production.
“We loved this pitch,” said Cristal President Scott Einbinder. »

A sci-fi horror from the directorial duo of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who made a name for themselves with the documentary Catfish and went on to helm a couple of found footage Paranormal Activity films. Ruby Modine, Charles Aitken and Rachel Matthews have joined Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard in the cast of the horror movie “Half to Death” from Blumhouse Production, Variety has learned exclusively.
Variety first reported last month that Rothe would star as a woman who must solve the mystery of her own murder before her chances run out.
Modine currently co-stars in the seventh season of Showtime’s series “Shameless.” She has also wrapped production on the indie horror feature “Central Park.” Earlier this year, she starred in and recorded music for the short film “Super Sex,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Aitken stars on “The Knick.” Matthews is making her feature film debut.
Landon and Blumhouse previously collaborated on the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. »

We told you last week that Christopher Landon is directing Half to Death from a script he co-penned with Scott Lobdell. Landon, who penned Dusturbia and several Paranormal Activity sequels, also directed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Paramount’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Nine years ago Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes had tapped Transformers and Jennifer’s Body star Megan Fox to star in a Groundhog Day-esque horror pic […] »

Rothe just wrapped the indie feature “Forever My Girl,” and also plays a role in Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s “La La Land.” Her other credits include Gabriele Muccino’s “Summertime,” “The Disaster Artist” and “Please Stand By” with Dakota Fanning and Toni Collette.
Rothe also appeared in the web series “High Maintenance,” which recently sold to HBO, and currently stars in MTV’s comedy “Mary + Jane. »

By now, horror fans are used to Blumhouse Productions’ surprise “dumping” strategy, where a handful never-before-seen titles hit Netflix/VOD without warning. This explains why you might not have known about Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s second feature this year, Viral, until – well – now. Movies like Mockingbird, Mercy, and The Veil don’t make you question why Blum chose to unceremoniously push them out, but Viral does. There’s more to Christopher Landon and Barbara Marshall’s screenplay than squirmy invaders and teenage chills, that I urge you to discover from the comfort of your sofa and surround sound setup.
VOD is no longer a kiss of death, people – and that’s not the worm flu talking.
In this quarantined nightmare, Sofia Black-d’Elia and Analeigh Tipton play two sisters who find themselves under government-sanctioned house arrest, sans supervision. Emma (Black-d’Elia) and Stacey (Tipton) are without their parents, »

Anytime we as horror fans read the words "From the Producer Of The Visit, The Purge, And Insidious", we tend to take note. Even though that doesn't necessarily mean much, because it's not the writer or director, however we're still intrigued.

For almost a year, Graffiti with Punctuation editor Blake Howard and I have been discussing doing a series of essays about a topic of mutual interest - portrayals of masculinity on screen. The aim is to explore our favorite elements of the topic, to get quite personal and to come up with something hopefully compelling.
That journey continues today with the second piece by myself, arguably one of the most personal pieces of writing I've ever done for the site and sets a tone for promising reading to come. I urge you to check out the piece in our features section, or by clicking here and to leave feedback on it if possible.

“Viral,” a thriller about a deadly outbreak that brings a community to its knees, will be forgoing a theatrical release, Variety has learned.
The micro-budget release is being backed by Blumhouse Productions, the makers of “Paranormal Activity” and “The Purge,” and is distributed by Dimension Films, the Weinstein Company label that is primarily concerned with horror films and other genre projects. It was originally scheduled to debut on Feb. 19, where it would have gone up against the faith-based drama “Risen,” the horror film “The Witch” and the historical drama “Race.”
Blumhouse and Dimension have yet to decide on an alternative releasing strategy. Blumhouse has experimented through its Bh Tilt label with several different forms of distribution, including launching films in smaller and more targeted collections of theaters or on video on-demand platforms. The companies may go the VOD route with “Viral,” or debut the picture on streaming services or on television. »

Scream Factory is also keeping busy with their double feature Blu-ray of The House Where Evil Dwells / Ghost Warrior and Over Your Dead Body, the latest from Takashi Miike. Other notable releases on January 5th include The Inhabitants, Wrecker, Condemned, and Kill Game.
