DVD Playhouse—April 2011

By

Allen Gardner

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. »

[TV] Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: The Complete Seasons 1-3

6 April 2011 9:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

A&E is re-releasing the first three seasons of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, the feel-good, family values championing series that preceded 7th Heaven by three years. The show existed in a more innocent age of network television. Even if only 13 years have passed since the show ended, Dr. Quinn would be hard-pressed to find a spot in today’s lineup. Both the character and show of Dr. Quinn extolled traditional virtues and carried a strong equality of the sexes message. Even if the story of an episode was specifically about equality, the show was so deeply rooted in that concept from the double-length pilot episode that it was impossible to separate from its core later on. In some cases a show that pushes values can feel a bit preachy, but the production values and the strength of Jane Seymour as the titular doctor helped the show evade that feel and »

SyFy's Saturday SmackDown: Debbie Gibson vs Tiffany

27 January 2011 1:52 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

In the event I didn't make it clear just how frakkin' excited I am for this Saturday's original creature feature starring none other than 80s teen queens Debbie (not just Deborah any more) Gibson and Tiffany, I wanted to give it another poke.

Some people line up for days for tickets for Star Trek or Harry Potter movies. Me? I'm a happy couch camper awaiting my B-movie of the week with all of it's cheesy, low-rent, wacky special effects that make you squirm, groan and laugh all at the same time.

Growing up, Saturdays and Sundays were meant for watching Roger Corman classics and Japanese monsters with heart. Remember Gamera, who always saved the kids in the end from the big bad monster terrorizing some Japanese sea port? They can be downright frightening or begging for your support and cheers.

Interview: Jane Seymour Goes Beyond Dr. Quinn to ‘Perfectly Prudence’

6 January 2011 10:21 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Jane Seymour is a memorable beauty, and has found success in virtually all areas of the media. After breaking through with films such as “Live and Let Die” and “Somewhere in Time,” she was “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” for six seasons on TV. She returns with “Perfectly Prudence” on the Hallmark channel.

The television movie marks the second time Seymour has played Prudence McCoy, a British version of Martha Stewart. In this go around, new producers come in to remake Prudence’s show. One of the producers is played by Joe Lando, notable because he was Seymour’s Dr Quinn co-star throughout the series. Their on-screen chemistry is revived, and the complications of re-tooling Prudence gives this adventure a comic touch.

Could Robert Pattinson have some dreamboat competition?

4 January 2011 9:06 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith

HollywoodNews.com: Will 2011 be the year that Tom Sturridge joins his close pal Robert Pattinson as a leading big screen dreamboat? That’s what some movie insiders are predicting, with the 25-year-old British actor of “Vanity Fair” and “Pirate Radio” fame coming up with back-to-back films of interest this year, including the highly-anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” with Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund.

First, however, there is the February release, “Waiting for Forever,” in which Sturridge plays a street performing juggler who chases after the love of his life, “The O.C.’s” Rachel Bilson. The cast also includes “The Vampire Diaries”‘ Matthew Davis, “Eurotrip’s” Scott Mechlowicz, Blythe Danner, Nikki Blonsky, and Richard Jenkins.

“It’s hard to describe. It’s somewhere between a love story and a quirky kind of comedy. It will make you laugh and cry, »
