Bill was known by his friends as "Billy", when he was a youth. He attended "public" school, as many actor's sons and daughters did in the 1960s. He was never athletic since he was stricken with a childhood disease. He was well liked at Emerson Junior High School in West Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Emerson in June 1962. He was known as a friend to everyone, rich or not. After Emerson, he went on to University High School in Los Angeles.

Contracted polio, but despite having to wear braces on his legs, he played baseball at WLA field (now called the Bad News Bears Field) at Ohio Ave and Sepulveda Blvd Los Angeles Ca, in 1961. He played First Base because of his limited mobility.
Married the second daughter of Ernie Kovacs first in Tijuana, Mexico on June 18, 1965, then remarried on December 11, 1965 in Los Angeles, California, because both sets of parents weren't sure a Tijuana marriage was legal. They had one daughter, Keigh.
