Flickering Myth’s Top Ten Movies of 2016

Flickering Myth’s writing team present our top ten movies of 2016…

As 2016 draws to a close and we ring in the New Year, Flickering Myth’s writers have been putting our collective heads together to vote on the best cinematic offerings from the past twelve months. As always, we’ve voted on our individual top ten favourites, with those lists then collated to give us an overall Top Ten Movies of 2016.

It’s probably worth noting that the likes of La La Land, Silence, Manchester By the Sea and Hacksaw Ridge haven’t opened in the UK yet. Had they, they may well have featured in our countdown – or in the case of one of those that did make the cut, it would likely have finished higher.

Chris O’Dowd stars in great new clip for Netflix’s ‘Mascots’

We’ve already seen the brilliant first trailer for Christopher Guest‘s upcoming Mascots series on Netflix and now we’ve got an entertaining clip. It features Chris O’Dowd‘s character who’s an Ice Hockey mascot called ‘The Fist‘… and may have been involved in some rather unsavoury incidents.

Guest has a unique style, you’ll know him for Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, and Mascots features many of his regulars. This time it takes place in the ultracompetitive world of sports mascots where they compete for the most prestigious award in their field, the Gold Fluffy.

Co-starring the likes of Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Ed Begley, Jr., Christopher Moynihan, and Don Lake, this O’Dowd clip is great and we’re looking forward to seeing more when it launches on Netflix on October 14th:

Toronto Film Review: ‘Mascots’

Toronto Film Review: ‘Mascots’
In Christopher Guest’s “Mascots,” there’s a funny scene in which the judges for the 8th World Mascot Association Championship in Anaheim, Calif. — a competition known as “the Fluffies” — call one of the 20 competing finalists onto the carpet for an alleged sin of political incorrectness. The judges include the ever-beaming Michael Hitchcock as a persnickety control freak in a sweater vest, Ed Begley Jr. as an old curmudgeon with a “micro-penis,” Don Lake as a geek version of J.K. Simmons, and Jane Lynch, with her never-less-than-hilarious cutthroat hauteur, as the author of a book called “A Moose-ing Grace: A Mascot’s Journey to God.”

The finalist who’s in hot water is Cindy Babineaux (Parker Posey), a broken-down belle in a frowzy dye job whose mascot character is Alvin the Armadillo, from a college in the heart of Mississippi. The trouble is that the team was once named the Leaping Squaws.

The Mascots Trailer Is Here And The World Is A Little Happier

The world of film is obviously as broad and far-reaching as it could be, and no matter how much we might feel that certain films are so good that everyone should like them, people have differing tastes. I might think My Dinner with Andre is easily one of the best films there is, despite the fact that most people can’t finish it. Virtually every list of the best films ever includes Casablanca somewhere close to the top, but I agree with the cast and crew in thinking that it isn’t really anything special. Such is life.

But, if you don’t have Waiting for Guffman, or Best in Show, or both, on your list of favorite movies, I just don’t get you.

Christopher Guest‘s mockumentary films (which also include A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration – which are both good, but not nearly as solid) all include familiar faces,

‘Mascots’: Watch the First Trailer for Christopher Guest’s New Mockumentary [Video]
Christopher Guest’s sense of the comically absurd returns in full force in the first trailer for Netflix’s “Mascots.”

The trailer begins with Ollie the Octopus and Tammy the Turtle performing and includes such off-the-wall assertions as “Benny the Banana Slug has a failed drug test” and Ed Begley Jr.’s character declaring, “Danny the Donkey, my mascot, was the first to have an anatomically correct costume. I was over-compensating.”

Guest, whose directing credits include “A Mighty Wind,” “Waiting for Guffman,” “Best in Show” and “For Your Consideration,” set his most recent project during the ultra-competitive 8th World Mascot Association Championships. Mascots compete for prestigious Gold Fluffy.

The cast includes regulars in Guest’s previous mockumentaries such as Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Bob Balaban and Jennifer Coolidge along with Christopher Moynihan, Don Lake, Brad Williams, Zach Woods, Chris O’Dowd, Matt Griesser, Susan Yeagley, Sarah Baker, Tom Bennett,
