The Foundation's mission is to encourage the development of more effective therapies for patients with leukemia, lymphoma and related cancers, including alternative or complementary medicine. Oprah Winfrey brought both Stedman Graham and Gayle King to the opening gala for Tyler Perry's new movie and TV studio in Atlanta on Saturday night. While Oprah is dealing with a defamation lawsuit from the former headmistress of her South African Girls school, it was the history-making event that had Oprah so emotional. Tyler is the first African-American to own his own studio and there were a few tears in the crowd as he took the stage to announce that he's named three sound-stages after the legendary actors Ruby Dee, Cecily Tyson and Sidney Poitier. Sidney was there to accept the honor, saying, "I spent 56 years making movies and this is the reward that I have that means the most to me." With a supportive crowd including Will Smith, John Legend and many others, it was truly an event worth celebrating. To see 30 photos of the event, including Star Jones, »

5 October 2008 8:30 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

History was made Saturday night, when Tyler Perry became the first African-American ever to launch his own major TV and film studio. But that wasn't the only reason Will Smith was tipping his hat to Perry at the gala Atlanta event in the old Delta Airlines headquarters that now serve as Perry's studio. "I admire most that he can be that tall and wear a white suit," said Smith, 40, never to waste a punch line. "I usually have to avoid white. At this height, you don't tend to look sexy in white suits, but he pulled it off." The same »

10 March 2008 6:24 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

All non-performing inductees to the Rock + Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award from Monday night onwards - as a tribute to the late music mogul and Hall of Fame co-founder.

The naming of the honour, which was given to Ertegun in 1987, was announced at the beginning of Monday night's induction ceremony in New York.

In 1995, the Hall of Fame's main exhibition hall was named after Ertegun, who died in 2006.

The first winners of the Ahmet Ertegun Award for Lifetime Achievement were `Sound of Philadelphia' songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

The duo was honoured at the ceremony by Patti LaBelle, who kicked off the night's performances with a spirited rendition of Gamble + Huff's classic If You Don't Know Me By Now. They were inducted by soul singer Jerry Butler. »
