He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2002 Queen's Birthday Honors List for his services to charity and entertainment.

He was the son of an Irish-born British Armed Forces veteran.

Preferred the term "comic in a frock", rather than "drag artiste".

He first donned his wig and eyelashes during a naval concert party, having been sent to Singapore as part of Lord Mountbatten's invasion task force towards the end of World War II.

In 1969, he became the first drag act to appear in the Royal Variety Performance.

He spent most of the WWII years in Devon, where he was evacuated during the Blitz.

During the 1960s and '70s, he was one of the highest-paid performers on British television.
