Phantasm: A Beginner’s Guide

Ben Robins with a beginner’s guide to Phantasm

One of cult fandom’s most dearly loved horror franchises has finally been given the blu-ray upgrade it deserves this year, off the back of not just a brand new sequel, but also a J.J. Abrams-backed 4K restoration of the original. Spanning five movies, countless casting back and forths, and nearly 40 years of production woes and seriously devoted fan conventions, the Phantasm series has finally, at long last, pulled to a close.

And whilst it might not be quite as expansive (or as widely known) as a lot of the genre’s other heavy-hitters like Friday the 13th, Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street, Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm movies hold a special place in horror lore, as not just one of the only long-running franchises to be consistently owned and controlled by the same person, but also as one »

New international trailer for The Mummy lands

21 April 2017 9:47 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

A new international trailer for the upcoming redo of The Mummy over at Universal Pictures has landed on our doorstep. The new promo hails from the Far East and once again gives us an early look at Tom Cruise and co. in the forthcoming remake of the classic monster movie.

In addition to this new trailer, director Robert Kurtzman has also been speaking with Entertainment Weekly about his new film, and just who we may expect to see alongside The Mummy in the film. After all, we’ve already seen Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll in the existing trailers.

“The movie’s called ‘The Mummy,’ not ‘The Mummy Meets 12 Other Monsters,’” Kurtzman told the outlet. “If we create a world that feels interesting and scary, then we will have succeeded in setting up the larger universe.”

Fair enough.

The Mummy debuts in cinemas from the 9th June 2017.

Now on Blu-ray: The Wishmaster Collection Arrives From Vestron Video

2 April 2017 3:30 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

By 1997, the creature feature was all but dead in the horror world. Films like From Beyond, The Fly, The Beast Within, and dozens of others were very popular in the '80s and early '90s, but by the time Wes Craven upended the genre with Scream, people had already started getting cynical about horror and the lens had largely turned inward. However, the idea of the gruesome monster laying waste to guilty and innocent alike wasn't completely dead, and in '97 the Djinn was born. Wishmaster was written by Peter Atkins, best known for his work on the Hellraiser series, and directed by FX wizard Robert Kurtzman, then a part of the legendary Knb Efx Group with Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger. Kurtzman had years...

Well, March is definitely “going out like a lamb” (as the old saying goes) when it comes to horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, as there are only several different titles coming home this Tuesday.

Universal Studios is releasing J.A. Bayona’s heartbreaking modern fable, A Monster Calls, to both Blu-ray and DVD this week, and if you're a cult film fan, then you have a few fun movies to look forward to adding to your home collections: Witchtrap, Venom, and the four-film collection for Wishmaster, a new addition to the Vestron Video Collector’s Series.

Other notable releases for March 28th include Mortuary Massacre, The Abduction of Jennifer Grayson, Park Chan-Wook's The Handmaiden (which finally gets the Blu-ray treatment), and for the little monster fans, Monster High: Electrified.

Vestron Video’s ‘Wishmaster Collection’ Brings the Evil Djinn Into HD

26 March 2017 4:01 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The films are an example of diminishing returns, but the collection is more than the franchise’s fans could have wished for.

There are rumors that Lionsgate’s fantastic Vestron Video line of remastered, supplement-filled Blu-rays celebrating horror films from the ’80s and ’90s may be closing up shop. It’s unconfirmed, and LG themselves have been mum on the subject, but it would be an unfortunate turn of events for genre fans if true. They’re only nine releases in, but already they’ve done tremendous work with fantastic new editions of fun classics like Chopping Mall, Waxwork, and The Gate.

Their most recent release, and possibly their last if the rumor proves true, is the four-film Wishmaster Collection. As someone who had never seen the first film and was utterly unaware that three sequels even existed this set offered a first-time watch across the board. So of course I binge-watched all four across a single »

Kevin Smith interview: Yoga Hosers, Arrow, Mallrats

Kevin Smith tells us how he wound up making Yoga Hosers, a movie about miniature Nazis made of sausage...

Among geeky film fans, Kevin Smith needs no introduction. He’s brought us such treats as Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma, and recently he’s had a massive resurgence as a giant in the nerdy podcast world.

So far, two movies have come out of Smith’s podcasting: first was Tusk, branching out from a SModcast episode about a Gumtree advert seeking someone willing to dress up as a walrus in exchange for lodgings. Justin Long starred in that one, with Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith featuring in the supporting cast alongside her best friend Lily Rose Depp and her famous father Johnny Depp.

And now we have Yoga Hosers, a spinoff from Tusk in which Smith Jnr and Depp Jnr’s Canadian convenience store clerks »

The Bottom Shelf: John Carpenter, Absurd, Intruder, Creepy

Vampires, Ghosts Of Mars and the super-tense Creepy lead our latest round-up of horror DVDs and Blu-rays...

Any regular readers (there must be a few of you; there must be) will be more than aware of this writer’s borderline obsessive love for the movies of one John Carpenter. You’ve got your Halloween, The Thing, They Live or The Fog, but everyone knows the real quality comes in the form of the later films in this cult film-maker, lord of the synth and accomplished ‘tache-wearer’s career and the classics that are Escape From L.A and his TV-movie take on Village Of The Damned. No? Ok, those are both more than a little iffy, but with the latest Blu-ray release of two other generally maligned late efforts in Carpenter’s body of work, we ask the age-old question 'Was Vampires really that bad?'

Review: The Bye Bye Man Misses the High Mark of its Promising Potential

16 January 2017 10:45 AM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

It’s where some people keep their keys, money, or a good book, but the nightstand drawer in director Stacy Title’s The Bye Bye Man holds something far more sinister than spare change. When spoken aloud, what’s carved into its wooden surface has the ability to scare your soul and scar your psyche, so it’s a shame that the film featuring this frightening piece of furniture—and the entity it unleashes—doesn’t live up to its promising potential.

Seeking a home of their own after surviving the dorms at their Wisconsin university, lifelong best friends Elliot (Douglas Smith) and John (Lucien Laviscount) move into an old house that’s farther away from campus, but much closer to future horrors. Joining them in their eerie abode is Elliot’s girlfriend, Sasha (Cressida Bonas), giving their living situation a Three’s Company vibe. One night, Elliot discovers “The Bye Bye Man »
