‘Close Range Love’ Re-Grabs Top Spot at Japanese Box Office

Tokyo: “Close Range Love” (Kinkyori Renai), Naoto Kumazawa’s drama about a high school student’s crush on her handsome English teacher, rebounded from No. 2 to No. 1 at the Japanese B.O. for the Oct. 18-19 weekend. It deposed the previous week’s top film, the Sayuri Yoshinaga starrer “Cape Nostalgia.” Based on Rin Mikimoto’s best-selling comic, the film earned $1.16 million on 100,766 admissions for the frame, or 69% of its previous weekend’s total. Its cume is $4.49 million on 381,493 admissions.

Meanwhile, competitor “Cape Nostalgia”’s total rose to $4.84 million on 453,756 admissions. The higher cume derives from its stronger performance on the weekdays than “Close Range Love,” whose teen target aud is attending classes then.

Bowing at No. 3 on 199 screens nationwide is “Grace of Monaco” with $755,665 on 64,542 admissions. The only other non-Japanese film in the top ten, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” slipped from the seventh to the ninth spot. »
