We’ve seen a few spy photos from the set of The Dark Tower over the past couple of weeks [see here, here and here], but now thanks to Entertainment Weekly we’ve got our first official look at Idris Elba’s Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black from the hotly-anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s fantasy epic The Dark Tower. Take a look…

“When we meet Roland he’s a bit lost,” states Elba with regards to his role as The Gunslinger. “He’s been walking around for a long time, so he definitely feels like a man who’s… coiled. [He] has forgotten the face of his father. That’s a sense of, ‘You’ve forgotten your purpose.’ Until he meets [Jake Chambers], he doesn’t have anything to believe in, really. He’s really pent up and releases his soul through [defending] the boy.”

New Image from The Dark Tower Bows to Matthew McConaughey’s The Man in Black

14 July 2016 10:28 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Following the recent official reveal of Idris Elba as The Gunslinger, EW has now unveiled a new photo of the person he pursues: Matthew McConaughey’s Man in Black, aka Walter.

EW‘s photo shows The Man in Black strolling towards New York City’s Dixie Pig, a place where outsiders of the world—including sorcerers—congregate. Walter, who is also known as Randall Flagg from The Stand, is respected and feared by the crowd, who bow their heads as he passes by.

McConaughey tells EW that Walter is in search of Jake, a boy with the ability to “Shine.” The Man in Black hopes to exploit this power in order to destroy the Tower and bring about a collision of worlds and the rise of his master, the Crimson King. But Walter is squarely in the vengeful sights of The Gunslinger, who has a hateful history with the powerful being. »

15 years ago today: ‘Legally Blonde’ opened in theaters

13 July 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

15 years ago today, Elle Woods taught us to bend and snap. Legally Blonde hit theaters on July 13, 2001, giving Reese Witherspoon her breakout role and giving us a movie that put a pink-loving sorority girl in the place where she’s the outcast: law school. Until she proves all her doubters wrong, that is, in the midst of a murder trial, no less. The comedy’s success led to a 2003 sequel and a stage musical that premiered on Broadway in 2007. Other notable July 13 happenings in pop culture history: • 1923: The Hollywood sign, which then read “Hollywoodland,” was officially dedicated. • 1939: Frank Sinatra made his recording debut in a New York studio, singing “From The Bottom Of My Heart” and “Melancholy Mood” with the Harry James Band. • 1964: The Supremes recorded “Come See About Me” in “Hitsville U.S.A.,” Motown’s first headquarters. • 1984: The Muppets Take Manhattan and The Last Starfighter opened in theaters. »

Trailer for Netflix's Indie Cult Film 'Rebirth' Directed by Karl Mueller

12 July 2016 5:37 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Leave whenever you want, leave anytime you want..." Netflix has released the official trailer for a new indie feature it produced called Rebirth, from filmmaker Karl Mueller. The film is about an old friend who surprisingly shows up out of nowhere and convinces Kyle, played by Fran Kranz, to participate in a "self-actualization program" called Rebirth. As expected, it turns out this program is more of a cult and it's not exactly what it seems. The cast includes Adam Goldberg, Kat Foster, Nicky Whelan, Harry Hamlin, Andrew J. West, Sheryl Lee, Pat Healy, and Steve Agee. This looks quite intriguing, but I don't know how much more it has to say about cults that hasn't been covered in other films recently. Get a taste below. Here's the first official trailer for Karl Mueller's Rebirth, direct from Netflix's YouTube: Get up. Go to work. Come home, dinner, bed, do it all again. »

Trailer For Netflix’s ‘Rebirth’ Travels a Sinister Path to Self-Actualization

12 July 2016 4:04 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Netflix has been stepping up their distribution model to compete with other streaming services entering the original content game. One of their most recent projects has been given its first trailer. Rebirth follows a suburban man (Fran Kranz) who joins a private “self-actualization” program after bumping into an old college friend (Adam Goldberg) who recommends it highly.

The conceit looks to be a blend of David Fincher’s The Game, the events depicted in the documentary We Live In Public, and this year’s The Invitation. What remains to be seen is if it can have the intelligence of the first, the audacity of the second, or the slow-burn intensity of the third. This will be the sophomore directorial effort of Karl Mueller, who also penned the script. A promising aspect is cinematography by Bone Tomahawk Dp Benji Bakshi, who has a brilliant eye for the unnerving.

Netflix’s original thriller Rebirth gets its first trailer

12 July 2016 1:25 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Netflix has released the official trailer for Rebirth only a few days before its global release on the streaming service. The psychological thriller is written and directed by Karl Mueller (Mr. Jones) and follows Kyle (Fran Kranz), a man numbed by his 9-5 lifestyle, until his old friend Zack (Adam Goldberg) unexpectedly arrives to shatter his routine. Check out the trailer here…

Get up. Go to work. Come home, dinner, bed, do it all again. That’s life, every day, every year, until you die — unless you’ve got what it takes to be reborn. Rebirth gives a new lease on life, but only if you’re willing to pay the price.

Good Luck Escaping Rebirth [Trailer]

When I hear the words "we are not a cult" the first thing I think is: this is definitely a cult and you just know that when that mantra is followed by "you can leave any time," you're definitely in trouble.

Written and directed by Karl Mueller (one of the co-writers behind Xavier Gens' divisive The Divide), Rebirth stars Fran Kranz as Kyle, a regular Joe living an ordinary life until he has a run in with an old college friend. Zack (Adam Goldberg) convinces Kyle to join him on a life changing experience called Rebirth. Zack sells it as a retreat to re-invigorate Kyle's life and though at first sceptical, Kyle is sold on the idea when he sees the woman sent to pick-up the new recruits but from the moment he steps onto the bus, things start to get strange.

Given that it simmered in the bowels of production for so long, it’s hardly surprising that The Dark Tower has garnered so much attention now that the cameras are officially rolling on the Warner Bros. set.

Setting up shop in New York, the last seven days alone have brought forth our first peek at Matthew McConaughey dressed down in black as, ahem, the Man in Black himself (no sign of those tarot cards just yet), not to mention another look at Idris Elba suited and booted as the story’s de facto hero, Roland Deschain, Aka The Gunslinger.

This time around, it is newcomer Tom Taylor who is seen on the streets of NYC. In The Dark Tower, he’ll be portraying Jake Chambers, a close ally and friend to The Gunslinger. Without delving too deep into spoiler territory, how director Nikolaj Arcel plans to »

As production on Warner Bros. and Nikolaj Arcel’s big-screen take on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower continues in New York, a new batch of set snaps have arrived online. The other day we got our first glimpse of Matthew McConaughey as the enigmatic villain of the piece, The Man in Black, and now we have a much better look at Thor actor Idris Elba as the story’s protagonist, Roland Deschain, Aka The Gunslinger.

Elba certainly looks the part, but these recent pics have further confirmed that this movie is going to be taking some pretty significant liberties with the source material, and won’t be anything close to a direct adaptation of the first novel in the series, The Gunslinger. King previously suggested that the story would pick up somewhere around the middle of the saga, and seeing these character walking about in »
