In 1962, John Klawitter left a graduate fellowship in English at UCLA and enlisted in the army for three years. He studied the Vietnamese language at the Defense Language Institute and the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies, and was stationed as an intelligence cryptographer and linguist in Washington, D.C., and then Saigon, South Vietnam from June 1964 to June 1965 with the 3rd Radio Research Unit.
