“Lucknow Central – Outstanding Study Of Imprisonment & Freedom” – Subhash K Jha

Lucknow Central

Starring Farhan Akhtar, Gippy Grewal, Diana Penty, Deepak Dobriyal, Rajesh Sharma, Inamulhaq

Directed by Ranjit Tiwari

Rating: **** ½ (4 and a half stars)

“You don’t get justice in the world, you only get good luck or bad luck,” a wise old librarian (pronounced ‘lee-bray-nian’ by his Lucknowi singer-son) quotes Orson Welles.

Our good luck, then, that we get a prison drama as taut and thrilling, relevant and resonant as Lucknow Central right in the middle of the year when things are looking bloody bleak in Bollywood.

Yes, there is hope. Lucknow Central is by far the most engaging thinking-man’s thriller of the year. Ballsy and brave, it penetrates the politics of prison life without relinquishing the right to engage us in a solid storytelling spree where a clever cat-and-mouse game is played out between a sadistic jailor (Ronit Roy, in top form) and a non-guilty prisoner (Farhan Akhtar

Mohalla Assi banned by the censor board

Mohalla Assi banned by the censor board
Censor board member Dr Chandraprakash Diwedi's highly controversial film Mohalla Assi which pokes savage fun at the commercialization of the Holy city of Varanasi, has been banned by censor board. Interestingly the film's lurid, trailer laced with the most colourful Hindi expletives and cuss words, mouthed by actors with a sober image like Sunny Deol and Sakshi Tanwar had been "leaked" on the internet long before the film was submitted for certification. The full feature film with some of the shocking language heard in recent times was also "leaked" on the internet long before the film was submitted to the censor board. Finally Mohalla Assi has been shown to the Censor Board Of Film Certification (Cbfc) and banned. Apparently Mohalla Assi evoked extreme reactions from conservative elements in the censor board. Mohalla Assi based on the well-known novel by Hindi litterateur Kashinath Singh is a scathing critique on the touristic

Delhi court stays release of Sunny Deols Mohalla Assi
The very moment the Sunny Deol starrer Mohalla Assi's trailer 'leaked' on the web, it had everyone shell shocked because of its expletive-filled language. And this resulted in the political party Bajrang Dal demanding a ban on the film on one hand, and on the other hand, FIRs started being filed against Sunny Deol (who plays the role of a Sanskrit teacher in the film), and the film's director Dr. Chandrakprakash Dwivedi. The latest update is that, the release of the film now has been stayed by a Delhi court, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Based on the book Kashi Ka Assi by Dr. Kashinath Singh, Mohalla Assi also stars Ravi Kishan, Sakshi Tanwar and Saurabh Shukla in lead roles. Watch this space for more developments.

Their bonding on the trip is reminiscent of the terrific chemistry Gippy and Tina share in Second Hand Husband, a quirky family comedy about marriages, divorces and everything in the middle, co-starring Dharmendra, Rati Agnihotri, Ravi Kishan, Geeta Basra, Sanjay Mishra and Vijay Raaz.

The awesome twosome travelled to Amritsar yesterday and Tina got a real flavour of Punjab thanks to Gippy. First they went to the Golden Temple in Amritsar where they sought blessings. Next stop in the city was a local dhaba. Both Gippy and Tina are huge foodies and they had
