A Dog’s Purpose Rings In National Dog Day With Refreshing First Trailer

26 August 2016 2:17 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

You’ve heard the saying claiming cats have nine lives, but what about their docile companions? Introducing us to an uplifting story of canine reincarnation, the first trailer for A Dog’s Purpose has scurried online just in time for National Dog Day.

The pic, one lifted from W. Bruce Cameron’s best-seller, hails from director Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules). As the trailer above reveals, Josh Gad lends his vocal chords to the central canine, who experiences life through a variety of wildly different vignettes – and breeds – ranging from a cutesy pup to a trained German Shepherd. The story then becomes about Gad’s interaction with each new owner, a pitch that is about as crowd-pleasing as they come.

Imagine the premise of Todd Solondz’s indie pic Wiener-Dog, only spreading its heartfelt story across multiple eras, beginning with the 1940s. Outside of Gad’s multi-faceted role, »

Top 5 Seth Rogen MoviesTop 5 Seth Rogen MoviesAmanda Wood & Adriana Floridia8/11/2016 10:00:00 Am

Canada’s own Seth Rogen has become pretty prolific in the industry these past couple years, with at least one new movie released every year. This month he’s got another movie hitting theatres with Sausage Party.

We don’t know about you, but Sausage Party is one of our most anticipated movies of the summer. There have been lots of good animation movies recently, but this is a little different. It’s not often that we see an animated movie aimed at adults, and Sausage Party certainly isn’t targeted towards kids.

If you haven’t watched the hilariously outrageous trailer, the plot follows a hot dog weiner (voiced by Rogen) who discovers the horrors of the world outside the grocery store and strives to let his food companions know the truth. Literally everybody is in this, »

Stream this in the summer (and before the final season begins): 'Rectify'

1 August 2016 9:15 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In my early days on the beat, NBC had an ad campaign encouraging people to watch summer reruns, promising, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!" In the age of Peak TV, that slogan seems less cynical than accurate. The rise of streaming services has put the bulk of TV history only a click or two away, which means that people are constantly discovering The Wire, or Arrested Development, or Terriers (sigh) for the very first time. In lieu of a summer rewind this year, I wanted to offer up primers of shows you can stream, whether an older series available in full(*) or something current you can catch up on before its next season begins. So far, I've done a pair of current shows in  Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Halt and Catch Fire, plus completed shows in United States of Tara and Flight of the Conchords. (*) Note: with these picks, »

‘Touched With Fire’ Review

28 February 2016 11:53 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Katie Holmes, Luke Kirby, Christine Lahti, Griffin Dunne, Bruce Altman, Alex Manette, Edward Gelbinovich, Daniel Gerroll, Patrick Byas, Genevieve Adams | Written and Directed by Paul Dalio

In a world where having a mental disorder is treated as a hugely negative and stigmatized scenario, actor, writer, and director Paul Dalio hopes that his film, Touched With Fire, might help change people’s minds about people who are bipolar, and who have mental illnesses in general.

Starring Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby as title characters Carla and Marco, the film features two poets who are bipolar and fall in love in a hospital after getting into some trouble when trying to live on their own. Soon enough, they go through various stages of emotions and relationship statuses until they have to bring their relationship to light with their parents, played by Christine Lahti, Griffan Dunne, and Bruce Altman.

Movie Review: Touched with Fire

23 February 2016 8:00 AM, PST | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

Touched with Fire asks whether love between two thirty-something adults with bipolar disorder can be successful, loosely wondering about the intersection of sensuality, realism, and mental illness. It seems interested to extract a rubric explaining the connection between people with mental illness who are creatives. The film meanders through this exploration rather than makes up its mind as a creative drama or a serious character study where we could feel immediate pathos for the couple’s suffering and willfully involve ourselves in their situation (which could be an educational, engrossing filmic experience if well-presented). Contemporary films about mental illness such as Girl, Interrupted and A Beautiful Mind achieve this by stripping away characters’ “faces,” showing them as raw and realistic from the beginning. Disappointingly, this doesn’t happen in Touched with Fire. It takes time before New York City poets Carla (Katie Holmes) and Marco (Luke Kirby) approach identities more recognizably meaningful, »

Exclusive Video Interview: Katie Holmes And Luke Kirby Talks Touched With Fire

After a successful premiere back at SXSW last year, Touched With Fire is finally in theatres and earning itself much critical praise.

Revolving around two bipolar poets who meet in a psychiatric hospital and fall in love, the film is winning audiences over thanks to its touching story, a thoughtful approach to some of the provocative subject matter and strong performances from the entire cast, with standout work from Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby.

During the NYC press day for Touched With Fire, which took place earlier this month, we had to chance to sit down for an exclusive interview with both Holmes and Kirby, where they spoke about how they approached their roles, how they conveyed the physicality of their characters, creating backstories to work with and more.

Film Review: ‘Touched With Fire’ Contains a Different Perspective

21 February 2016 2:01 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – How do you explain air? That is what our thoughts are, after all – carbon-based cells interacting with circumstantial environment, sending the “message.” What if those cells send the thought receiver something outside “normal”? This is the exploration in the new film ‘Touched With Fire.’

Rating: 3.5/5.0

This is narrative fiction, but it brings out another side of the debate regarding the mental condition, and the judgement associated with it. The main characters in the film have Bipolar Disorder. Now, notice the word “disorder” – out of order, not orderly. The medical profession has defined the Bipolar condition is an anomaly. “Touched With Fire” seeks to take back the disorderly part of that definition, and doe it through the story of two people who take it to another place. There are clichés in the film, and scenes that were a bit too cute, but the writer/director Paul Dalio actually has Bipolar condition, »

Interview: Director Paul Dalio, Luke Kirby of ‘Touched With Fire’

20 February 2016 10:53 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The status of individual mental acuity and control is like the fingerprint of the brain. There are disorders that have been diagnosed, which alters that fingerprint into different types of behavior. A new film, “Touched with Fire” – directed by Paul Dalio and featuring lead actor Luke Kirby – seeks to bridge an understanding of Bipolar Condition, the particular mental journey of highest (and ultra-creative) highs and mind numbing lows.

That was a one sentence attempt at trying to explain a complex state of being – an affected individual’s behavior is like a snowflake, different in all. In his new film “Touched With Fire,” writer/director Paul Dalio seeks to provide normalization to the Bipolar nature, in a fictional narrative. Actor Luke Kirby, a TV and film journeyman, has a career defining performance as Marco, a writer who goes from independence to institutions to his parent’s home, never seemingly under control. »

Touched With Fire – The Review

18 February 2016 6:38 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Review by Dana Jung

Two powerful performances dominate the new film Touched With Fire, which examines the sometimes blurry line between genius and madness.  Carla (Katie Holmes, who also co-produced) and Marco (Luke Kirby, seen recently on TVs Rectify) are two creative and restless poets who are also bi-polar.  They each display an almost obsessive need to write and perform their verse at local poetry bars.  After a chance meeting attending group therapy in the mental ward of a hospital, the two find in each other a kindred spirit with a common bond—the burning need to create.

Though not really a film version of the book Touched With Fire, the film is informed by the basic themes of that work.  Published in 1993, and subtitled “Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament,” Touched With Fire was written by Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, a clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University. »

The title of Kay Jamison’s book, Touched With Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament, doesn’t exactly scream “movie version,” but writer-director Paul Dalio has been blessed with an intriguing premise and two superb leading actors in Katie Holmes and Luke Kirby to make Touched With Fire a stirring and engaging film.
