Serious-looking, dignified English character actor from the London stage. On screen, he specialised in portraying noblemen (Prince Metternich in Juarez (1939), Grand Duke Gregor in The Lone Wolf in Paris (1938)) and heads of state (Napoleon III in The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936) and A Dispatch from Reuter's (1940) ). Also a long gallery of doctors , police inspectors and diverse authority figures. Prolific on television from the mid-1950's.
