Roger Donaldson to Direct Racial Drama ‘Jena Six’ (Exclusive)
Roger Donaldson is directing the independent drama “Jena Six,” with production set to start in April in New Orleans, Variety has learned exclusively.

Donaldson, whose recent credits include “November Man” and “The Bank Job,” is directing from a screenplay by Jonathan Amaret. Producers are Amaret and Dawn Krantz (“Man Down”).

The “Jena Six” were six black high school students in a small Louisiana town who were initially charged with attempted murder in a 2006 attack on a white student. The attack took place several months after a series of racial incidents at the school, including three nooses hanging from a tree at the high school a day after a black student asked the principal if black students could sit under the tree.

The victim of the attacks was treated at an emergency room for several hours and attended a high school dance that evening. The six teenagers were arrested and Mychal Bell,

TV News Roundup: Mark Duplass, Brian F. O’Byrne Join Discovery’s Unabomber Series ‘Manifesto’

In today’s TV news roundup, Discovery’s forthcoming Unabomber series rounds out its cast, survival show “Hacking the Wild” and crime drama “Rogue” announce premiere dates, and more.

Casting

In addition to Paul Bettany as Ted Kaczynski (a.k.a. the Unabomber) and Sam Worthington as FBI agent Jim Fitzgerald, Dicovery’s “Manifesto” has added Mark Duplass, Jeremy Bobb, Lynn Collins, Katja Herbers, and Brian F. O’Byrne to its cast. “Manifesto” will track the FBI’s radical new methods of intelligence gathering in their attempt to take down the notorious terrorist. Other cast members include Jane Lynch, Keisha Castle-Hughes, and Chris Noth. Duplass will play Kaczynski’s younger brother David, while Herbers takes on the role of David’s wife Linda. Bobb, Collins, and O’Byrne will play members of the team setting out to catch Kaczynski.

J.J. Abrams Partners on Michael Jackson Series With Tavis Smiley and Warner Bros.
Tavis Smiley is partnering with J.J. AbramsBad Robot Productions to develop Smiley’s book “Before You Judge Me: The Triumph and Tragedy of Michael Jackson’s Last Days” for Warner Bros. Television. Smiley and Bad Robot both have TV production deals with the studio.

Smiley’s book is scheduled to be published by Little, Brown and Company June 21. It looks at the highs and lows of Jackson’s life and his constant hunt for personal privacy.

Smiley and Abrams will serves as executive producers on the project with Ben Stephenson and David Brewington. The project, which has no network attached yet, is being produced by Bad Robot Productions and Tavis Smiley TV & Film in association with Warner Bros. Television. TV drama to examine the last weeks of Michael Jackson’s life

According to Entertainment Weekly, author and talk show host Tavis Smiley has signed a deal with Warner Bros. Television to develop a scripted drama series based upon his upcoming book Before You Judge Me: The Triumph and Tragedy of Michael Jackson’s Last Days, which is set for publication next year.

The series will “examine the soaring highs and deep lows faced by the late pop star — his constant hunt for privacy in a life that was more public than almost any other, and the pressures he endured as someone whose fame made him socially fragile and almost unable to live.”

The deal follows Warner’s previous acquisition of Smiley’s book Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Final Year, whcih is being developed by J.J. AbramsBad Robot Productions.

Tavis Smiley’s Michael Jackson, Maya Angelou Books to Be Developed for TV Series

Broadcaster, author and producer Tavis Smiley has signed an exclusive multi-year development and production pod deal with Warner Bros. Television Group that will allow him to develop new scripted television series for broadcast networks and cable, it was announced Thursday by Wbtvg president and Cco Peter Roth.

Under the deal, Wbtvg has optioned two of Smiley’s books for development as TV series. The first one, which was published in April and is titled “My Journey With Maya,” follows Smiley’s 28-year-long relationship with poet, author and civil rights hero Maya Angelou. The second, which is due in June 2016, is titled “Before You Judge Me: The Triumph and Tragedy of Michael Jackson’s Last Days” and promises to offer a “vibrant account” of the King of Pop’s final days.

Update: In the wake of the latest news regarding comedian Bill Cosby’s rape allegations, African-American-skewing network Bounce TV has announced that it will immediately cease airing reruns of television series “Cosby,” while the Bet-owned Centric Network has pulled “The Cosby Show.”

Cosby came under more scrutiny yesterday after news broke that he admitted to drugging women for sex. Since last year, he has been openly battling multiple allegations of rape.

A competitor of Bet, Bounce TV is an African-American focused, advertiser-supported digital multicast channel carried by broadcast TV stations around the country. It was co-founded by Martin Luther King III and Georgia politician Andrew Young.

Cosby” was a CBS sitcom that aired from 1996 to 2000. It starred Bill Cosby and his “Cosby Show” co-star Phylicia Rashad, as well as Madeline Kahn, Jurnee Smollett and others.

Logo celebrated Pride Week and an impeccably timed Supreme Court decision with “Trailblazer Honors,” which taped Thursday at New York’s the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The telecast will air on Saturday at 8 p.m.

President Barack Obama sent a video message celebrating the network’s 10 years on the air and referenced Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover. “When this network aired its first show, gay marriage was a political wedge issue used to divide us. Today the majority of Americans live in states where they can get married, no matter who they love. And all you have to do is look at this month’s cover of Vanity Fair to see how America is more accepting of people for who they truly are.”

Adam Lambert and Jack Antonoff and the Bleachers performed. Other presenters included Raven Symone, Tyler Posey and Martin Luther King III.

Raven Symone, Martin Luther King III Among Speakers at Logo’s Trailblazer Honors
Newly minted “View” co-host Raven Symone and civil rights advocate Martin Luther King III will be among the speakers at Logo’s second annual Trailblazer Honors ceremony.

King will pay tribute to Bayard Rustin, the openly gay civil rights leader who organized 1963’s March on Washington and who was also a close confidante to King’s father. The ceremony will also honor Judy and Dennis Shepard, who are the parents of slain gay teen Matthew Shepard, as well as Iranian Lgbt activist Arsham Parsi and two moms who are members of the Lgbt-focused parent-child outreach group Pflag.

Other celebrity speakers include Adam Lambert, Laura Jane Grace, Samira Wiley, Tituss Burgess, Tyler Posey, the indie band Bleachers, Kelly Osbourne, and Ellen DeGeneres’ mother, Betty.

The ceremony will air at 8 p.m. June 27 on Logo.
