J.J. Abrams Partners on Michael Jackson Series With Tavis Smiley and Warner Bros.

Tavis Smiley is partnering with J.J. AbramsBad Robot Productions to develop Smiley’s book “Before You Judge Me: The Triumph and Tragedy of Michael Jackson’s Last Days” for Warner Bros. Television. Smiley and Bad Robot both have TV production deals with the studio.

Smiley’s book is scheduled to be published by Little, Brown and Company June 21. It looks at the highs and lows of Jackson’s life and his constant hunt for personal privacy.

Smiley and Abrams will serves as executive producers on the project with Ben Stephenson and David Brewington. The project, which has no network attached yet, is being produced by Bad Robot Productions and Tavis Smiley TV & Film in association with Warner Bros. Television. The three companies announced last year that they are also developing a series based on Smiley’s book “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr »

Tavis Smiley and J.J. Abrams wanna be startin’ somethin’. Abrams’ Bad Robot Prods. is set to develop a new event TV series based on Smiley’s new book “Before You Judge Me: The Triumph and Tragedy of Michael Jackson’s Last Days.”

Warner Bros. TV, where both Smiley and Bad Robot are based for TV projects, is the studio attached; it hasn’t yet been sold to a network. “Before You Judge Me,” which Smiley wrote with David Ritz, is set to be published on June 21. The book looks at the final months of the King of Pop’s life.
