Luck – Season 1 DVD Review

11 December 2012 8:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Chester “Ace” Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) emerges from prison, having served a stretch for offences that this intricately plotted drama takes its time to elucidate. He is collected by his long-term companion, driver and confidante Gus (Dennis Farina) and straight away starts to work towards a grand plan of revenge on the men who each had a part to play in his incarceration. Meanwhile, four down on their luck gamblers set up a complex six-race accumulator that might just net them a fortune, while an assortment of other jockeys, gamblers, trainers, owners and managers intersect, their lives and fortunes inextricably linked to the California race track that will one way or another hold the key to each person’s fate.

Cheryl Ladd is a 'much more modern' Mrs. Santa Claus in Disney video

20 November 2012 3:00 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Cheryl Ladd is living proof that one of Charlie's Angels also can be Mrs. Santa Claus.

Soon after the classic female-detective show's "Complete Series" DVD release, the actress plays Father Christmas' spouse as Disney's direct-to-video offering "Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups" debuts Tuesday (Nov. 20). The title dogs talk, thanks to a voice cast that includes Richard Kind ("Argo") and Tom Everett Scott ("That Thing You Do!"), but it's hard to steal a movie totally from a Ladd clad as Mrs. Claus.

"I loved the script," she tells Zap2it, "and when I met with the producers, they kind of looked at me and said, 'You know, you're a little out-of-the-box.' I knew mine wouldn't be the first name that came to mind for Mrs. Santa Claus, but they liked the idea of reinventing her and having her with more energy.

"She's kind of a more Mary Poppins-y character, »

'Argo': Ben Affleck's Oscar-baiting history lesson balances thrills, drama, comedy and Hollywood magic

12 October 2012 5:35 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

You know it's awards season when the multiplexes start looking like time machines. It's no secret that recreating the past is often a quick ticket to Oscar nominations or wins. But it's usually only the films that find a fresh way of looking backward that catch on with paying audiences.

Ben Affleck's "Argo," opening this weekend in wide release, is one of those films. The movie sheds light on a little-known chapter of the 1979-1980 Iranian hostage crisis in which the CIA got a little help from Hollywood in using a fake sci-fi movie production as a cover to rescue six State Department employees secretly hiding in Tehran. The mission was classified for nearly two decades, until President Bill Clinton declassified it in 1997.

'Argo' (2012) Movie Review

11 October 2012 12:30 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It's 1979 and the Iranian revolution is reaching a tipping point. Outside the U.S. Embassy in Iran, a group of anti-American protesters have gathered as they have so many days prior, but today (November 4) is different than the rest. The raging mob eventually hops the fence, they're beating on the doors, breaking windows and soon gain access to the building. Meanwhile, inside, as a result of the insurgence, papers are being shredded and people are trying to escape. Few manage to get away. In fact, while everyone else is held hostage inside, only six get out the backdoor and find refuge at the Canadian Embassy. To show their face outside would mean suicide. Thus is the set up for Ben Affleck's Argo, a CIA thriller based on a declassified story. The focus is the mission to save said six employees before their identities are revealed, the result of which »

Ingenious Review

2 October 2012 7:42 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Jeff Balsmeyer’s second feature, Ingenious, may be about a couple of down on their luck inventors and salesmen, but you can’t help but get the sense that it says a lot about indie film at the same time. It takes a certain amount of drive, and love of one’s craft to dedicate so much to something that doesn’t always deliver rewards. And in Ingenious, you can feel that drive and love, both in front of the camera, and behind it.

Ingenious tells the true story of two best friends Matt (Dallas Roberts) and Sam (Jeremy Renner), two novelty item inventors who are at the very bottom of rock bottom. Their current line of watches inspired by dogs, golf, and the lottery just aren’t taking off as much as they hoped and they’re at the end of their line.
