Paul Reiser Has No Plans for ‘Mad About You’ Revival

7 August 2016 1:42 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A quarter century after its debut, “Mad About You” endures as one of TV’s classic romantic comedies. But despite the mania for reunions, revivals and sequels that has spread across the dial, series co-creator and star Paul Reiser has no intention of revisiting the lives of Paul and Jamie Buchman any time soon.

In Reiser’s mind, the question of what the couple, played by Reiser and Helen Hunt, would be doing today was answered in the two-part series finale that aired May 24, 1999, capping a seven-season run on NBC.

“One of the things we did deliberately in the finale was that we jumped ahead in the future. We saw where they went,” Reiser told Variety. “Part of why we did that was to avoid the temptation of going back…When you watch a reunion (show), all you do is say ‘Wow do they look older.’ ”

Reiser at present is a co-star of the 1980s-set Amazon comedy »

‘Red Oaks’ Season 2: Expect “A Classic ’80s Road Movie Episode” – TCA

7 August 2016 11:59 AM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

When Season 2 of Amazon's comedy Red Oaks premieres on November 11, it won't include anything quite as zany as last season's "body swap" episode, producers and stars confirmed today at TCA. In that episode, David (Craig Roberts) and Sam (Richard Kind) switch personalities after a bout of drinking. However, today's panel teased Season 2 a little: Expect a "classic '80s road movie episode," visits to New York and Paris, a resolution of Season 1 cliffhangers and fewer broad… »

‘Red Oaks’ Season 2 First Look: ‘Caddyshack’ Meets ‘The Graduate’ and Steven Soderbergh’s Brilliant Idea

7 August 2016 11:31 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

There will be no body swaps in “Red Oaks” Season 2, but fans of ’80s genre staples can get excited for a “bachelor party road trip.”

The Amazon comedy made a few waves in its first season when Richard Kind and Craig Roberts’ characters swapped bodies for an episode, delightfully recreating one of cinema’s favorite story premises during the Reagan era (and earning the episode a spot on IndieWire’s Best Episodes of 2015 list in the process). So it should come as no surprise who, among the stellar group of producers on the series — from David Gordon Green to Greg Jacobs — pitched the idea for a body swap episode.

“It was [executive producer Steven] Soderbergh’s idea,” Jacobs said, who has worked as Soderbergh’s producer and assistant director for nearly two decades. “We learned you could still get the heart and the emotion even with the zany antics.”

Richard Kind, The Last Martin O’Malley Supporter, Attends DNC For Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’

Some Bernie Sanders supporters scarfed beans as part of a fart-in protest at the DNC in Philly,  Stephen Colbert noted at the top of his final night of DNC live shows. “Some might question this tactic, but it’s part of a long tradition of political activism,” Colbert continued, nothing it was Patrick Henry who said, “Give me liberty or pull my finger.” But Sanders did not have the corner on disappointed delegates. Tribeca Film Review: ‘All We Had’

19 April 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Katie Holmes makes an undistinguished helming debut with “All We Had,” a middlebrow drama with no pretensions but also no depth. Based on Annie Weatherwax’s novel about a zero-income mother-daughter duo hit hard by the economic downturn, the pic is laid low by a banal script that takes the easy path at every turn, resulting in a yet another movie of good intentions and weak delivery. Performances are the strong suit, especially Luke Wilson, whose discreet, fully engaged conception of character makes prosaic dialogue feel real. Holmes and Wilson combined should generate enough interest to see decent VOD traffic.

Thanks to a cliched voice-over and over-explanatory conversation, all background info deemed necessary is spoon-fed within the first five minutes. Rita (Holmes) and her 14-year-old Ruthie (Stefania Owen, “The Carrie Diaries”) are all alone in the world, exiting yet another town where they can’t pay their bills. Rita’s »

Katie Holmes Directs All We Had

18 April 2016 3:45 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Team Experience is at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here's Manuel on All We Had.

To say Rita Carmichael is Katie Holmes’s best role and best performance to date seems almost like a backhanded compliment. After all, Joey Potter aside, what else comes close to that description? Nevertheless, there’s no denying that Holmes has thrown herself into the role of this drunk single mother whose solution to her problems is putting “all we had” into their car and driving away, hoping the signs (on the road and, you know, of the universe) lead her to where she needs to be.

Holmes is a prickly presence on screen as Rita, finding ways of making her sunken eyes and oft-mimicked mouth quirks work to her advantage to sketch out this clearly broken woman who’s trying her darndest to offer her teenage daughter (a solid Stefania Owen in white trash Rory »
