Japan B.O.: ‘Hero’ Wins Second Weekend

Tokyo — “Hero,” the second feature entry in a long-running TV/film franchise centering on a rebellious public prosecutor played by Takuya Kimura, won its second straight weekend at the Japanese box office.

For the July 24-25 frame “Hero” earned $2.99 million on 271,000 admissions. This was about half its take for its opening weekend — the biggest of any live-action domestic film released in Japan so far this year. Produced by Fuji TV and distributed by Toho, “Hero” had a cumulative total of $15 million from 1.45 million admissions by its ninth day in theaters.

Meanwhile, last week’s number two, “The Boy and the Beast,” another Toho release, held onto its spot in the chart, with $2.74 million. By Monday (July 27), it had reached a total of $20 million on admissions of 1.9 million.

Disney’s “Inside Out” moved up one slot from fourth to third, with earnings of $2.97 million on 240,000 admissions, pushing it past the 1 million ticket sales mark. »

Japan Box Office: ‘Hero’ Opens On Top

Tokyo — “Hero,” the second film based on a popular Fuji TV drama series featuring a rule-bending public prosecutor played by Takuya Kimura, won the July 18-19 weekend at the Japanese box office.

Opening on 443 screens, with Toho distributing, the film earned $5.90 million on 541,000 admissions – the highest figure of any domestic film  bowing this year.  But its opening weekend take is 27% down on the previous “Hero” film, which finished with $66 million in 2007.

Last week’s number one, “The Boy and the Beast,” also distributed by Toho, fell to number two, scoring $4.0 million on 350,000 admissions. As of Monday, the Mamoru Hosoda animation had driven its cumulative total to $15 million on 1.4 million admissions.

Bowing at number four was Disney’s “Inside Out” with $3.27 million. The film is competing with local animations for the family market – hugely important now that Japanese kids and many of their parents are finally on summer holiday. One, the »
