Should Superhero Movies Be Light or Dark?

8 July 2017 10:28 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The answer, I hope we can agree, is obvious: Superhero movies should be light. And dark. And everything in between. There’s no rule or formula, no one-cape-and-spandex-suit-fits-all way to do it. Yet when I go into a new comic-book superhero movie, even though I know that it’s a franchise product designed to sell tickets (and toys) around the globe, and that it’s now just a small piece in a larger “universe,” I have a prejudice, or at least a stubborn desire, and it is this: I want it to be great. Not just okay, not just “a respectable sequel” or a diverting time-passer, but something that sweeps you up and leaves an indelible imprint, the way that the greatest comic-book movies have done.

A lot of people seem to feel that “Spider-Man: Homecoming” delivers on that promise. I’d say it’s a perfectly decent reboot/Marvel fable (though not as exciting as the »

When films say they are based on true stories, it is easy to take such statements with a pinch of salt. The Amityville Horror though is one that is so enshrined in pop culture that it has a whole legend built up around it, whether it is true or not. Second Sight have now brought the popular horror to Blu-ray in the UK and it is well worth buying.

The Amityville Horror is the story of the Lutz family, who move into the perfect family home on the coast of Long Island. Surprised at how cheap it was, it soon becomes apparent why when the shocking history of the house is revealed, along with the demonic presence that resides there. »

Blu-ray Review – The Amityville Horror (1979)

26 June 2017 12:35 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Amityville Horror, 1979.

Directed by Stuart Rosenberg.

Starring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, Rod Steiger, Don Stroud, Murray Hamilton, Meeno Peluce, John Larch, and Val Avery.

Synopsis:

The Lutz family move into a house that was the scene of a grisly mass murder, only to flee for their lives 28 days later.

While approximately three people in the world wait with baited breath for Amityville: The Awakening, the much-delayed 157th sequel to 1979’s The Amityville Horror, the wizards at Second Sight have decided to go back to that original movie and issue it in a rather splendid limited edition steelbook, which is only apt for its debut UK Blu-ray release.

Apt because The Amityville Horror is one of those horror movies that many of us of a certain age have a fond nostalgic glow for and other 1970s big hitters like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, The Exorcist »

Superman and Metropolis Celebrate John Ostrander!

18 June 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

So – where was I last weekend? I was in Metropolis, that’s where, down in the Southern tip of Illinois attending the 39th Annual Superman Celebration. Way back in 1972 the city got DC’s permission to call itself Superman’s home and later that year the Illinois legislature passed a resolution confirming it. By the late 70s, the city decided to capitalize on all this by staging an annual Superman Celebration on the second weekend in June, a festival for the Man of Steel. Damn good idea, I sez.

The Celebration includes media guests connected with Supes. This year it was Margot Kidder, Dean Cain, James Marsters, and Sarah Douglas… as well as a few of us comic book types. I was the featured writer about six years ago and it seems I didn’t burn too many bridges because they had me back again this year along with Jimmy Palmiotti, »

Henry Cavill Reminds Us That Superman Turns 79 This Month

7 June 2017 11:46 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

With so much attention on Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League, it's easy to over look that Superman turns 79 this month since his debut in 1933. His character is one of the most important superheroes in the history of comic books. Henry Cavill, the current Superman, took to social media to make sure that everyone was informed of this milestone. Check out his post from Instagram:

Hi Everyone! I've been doing some Super Ruminations because this month is the 79th anniversary of Superman in Action Comics and thought it fitting to pass on this little fact. Who knew eh?? In January 1933, Jerry Siegel wrote a short story titled "The Reign of the Superman", which was illustrated by his friend Joe Shuster and self-published in a science fiction magazine. It told the story of a bald villain with telepathic powers. Trying to create a character they could sell to newspaper syndicates, »

Jenkins said in an interview with The Toronto Sun that she is excited to bring Diane Prince to life for new generations to enjoy,

“[This] Wonder Woman [film] is so much about her becoming the person she is…. I always thought the origin story would be the great way to go. I love origin superhero stories and I love the simplicity you can have with that journey. Also, there was the fact that no one had done her story and the fact that I love her. So it was a treasure trove of potential. »
