The former Miss World is due to appear at the Cannes festival as a debate about her weight rages in her home country

Aishwarya Rai is no stranger to Cannes. The Bollywood actor and former Miss World has attended the film festival 10 times, but her appearance on the red carpet next week is set to be her most talked about. The cause of a controversy raging in India lies not with her latest film – Rai is there to promote a  cosmetic brand rather than a new movie – but instead, bewilderingly, with recent photographs which suggest that, six months after giving birth to a baby girl, Rai has yet to regain her pre-pregnancy figure.

Many in India are asking whether the woman routinely referred to as the most beautiful in the world, and who occupies a place in Indian popular culture akin to Kate Middleton or Victoria Beckham, has an obligation »

Aamir Khan's TV show 'Satyamev Jayate' has been receiving applauds nationwide for exposing the female foeticide racket in Rajasthan, but the episode has not been well received by Rajasthan Minister Rajkumar Sharma.

Minister of State for Health, Rajkumar Sharma lashed out against Aamir Khan saying that the actor is just greedy for money and the Rajasthan government was already working on the issue of female foeticide before the actor's campaign.

He told the press, "There was an impression that the government has swung into action after Aamir Khan's campaign but to clarify, I would like to highlight that the government is already working for the same. Budget announcements to check foeticide are there and several other steps are being taken. The government took up the issue much before Aamir Khan's programme. Vamsee Juluri: Satyamev Jayate: Truth Is God In India's Phenomenal TV Show

14 May 2012 1:29 PM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

Satyamev Jayate is an ancient Sanskrit saying that means "truth alone triumphs." It is India's national motto and appears on the national symbol. Since it is so closely associated with government iconography, its mention in a conversation is likely to be steeped in irony, rather than optimism or belief. It is not something that is widely contemplated or debated.

In the past few days though, "Satyamev Jayate" has become one of the most searched, tweeted, shared, liked and talked about terms in India. The reason for this is not a sudden outbreak of spiritual contemplation, but simply a television show that has captured public attention like few others. The first episode featured a woman whose face was nearly ripped off by her husband. The subject of the episode though was even darker. It was about families that kill their own children. Sometimes, soon after they are born, sometimes even before they are born. »
