Daytime Emmys 2012: ABC and 'General Hospital' lead the nomination pack

The Daytime Emmy nominations were announced on Wednesday (May 9), and it was a great day for ABC. The network topped the list with 56 total nods. It was closely followed by PBS with 51.

The soap "General Hospital" helped lead the way for ABC. The program secured 23 nominations including for Outstanding Drama Series. "Sesame Street" and "The Young and the Restless" tied at 16 nominations each.

It was also a fond farewell for the two recently canceled soaps "All My Children" and "One Life to Live." The daytime dramas both secured 11 nominations.

The 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be held June 23.

It's the last hurrah for "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" at the Daytime Emmy Awards. The canceled soaps got their last nominations in key categories, but face stiff competition from fellow ABC soap "General Hospital."

ABC picked up a total of 56 nominations with PBS closing in behind with 51. "General Hospital," which will live to see its 50th anniversary, received 23 nominations. "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" each picked up 11.

'General Hospital' leads Daytime Emmy noms; 'Bold and Beautiful' left out

ABC’s General Hospital leads the way with 23 nominations for Daytime Emmy Awards.

The television academy announced Wednesday that the venerable soap opera will compete with NBC’s Days of Our Lives, CBS’ The Young and the Restless and the canceled All My Children of ABC for best daytime drama. NBC’s The Bold and the Beautiful has won the trophy three years in a row but wasn’t nominated this year.

Other repeat winners are possible, though: Ben Bailey of Cash Cab was nominated for best game show host and Dr. Mehmet Oz as best talk show host.

Nominations for the 39th annual Daytime Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday morning, and ABC’s General Hospital leads the pack with 23 total nods.

The Young and the Restless and Sesame Street follow with 16 each, Days of Our Lives netted 15, and The Bold and the Beautiful, All My Children (R.I.P.) and One Life to Live (Never forget!) amassed 11 each.

And before we sample the roll call, one fun fact: Secret Circle beauty Shelley Hennig landed a nomination in the Younger Actress category, for her run as Days‘ Stephanie (a role she last played in April 2011).

"The Help" Cleans Up at NAACP Image Awards! See Complete List of Winners, Nominees in All Categories!

As expected, Tate Taylor's "The Help" won big at the 43rd Annual NAACP Image Awards. The film won Outstanding Picture of the Year with Viola Davis winning Outstanding Actress and Octavia Spencer taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actress award. Taylor lost to "Jumping the Broom's" Salim Akil for Best Director because apparently, it's a better picture than "The Help!"

2012 NAACP Image Awards winners: 'The Help' wins big

"The Help" continued its hot streak during awards season by being the big winner at the 2012 NAACP Image Awards. The DreamWorks movie took home acting trophies for Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, plus Outstanding Motion Picture.

If there’s one thing those daytime soap operas do better than anyone, it’s bringing together their popular actors for one — or two, or multiple — trips down the aisle.
