Rio 2016: NBC Slowly Realizes Women Are the Olympic Stars

19 August 2016 6:39 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Wednesday night on NBC, the network’s Olympics coverage shifted away from sporting events to focus on the rapidly imploding story of 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte. The swimmer, who won a gold medal in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay in Rio de Janeiro, has struggled to stay on top of a mugging story he told his mother that has since snowballed into an international incident.

Officials in Brazil, eager to protect the nation’s reputation as a safe one for foreign travelers, are now contending that the mugging never happened, pointing to footage from a gas station and from security at the Olympic Village. And while Lochte made it back to the U.S. without incident, two of his teammates were detained in Rio for further questioning about the possibly false claims of a crime.

NBC anchors Bob Costas and Matt Lauer discussed Lochte’s story with a gravity usually reserved for armed insurrections »

Craig Gillespie On Board To Direct Margot Robbie In Sports Biopic I, Tonya

15 June 2016 11:23 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Remaining in the realm of real-life drama, Craig Gillespie has agreed terms to helm I, Tonya, an upcoming sports biopic that places Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie in the role of disgraced figure skater, Tonya Harding.

Gillespie, who dazzled audiences with gripping spectacle earlier this year through The Finest Hours, will work from a script penned by Steven Rogers, chronicling Harding’s meteoric rise to becoming one of the hottest stars on the ice. At her peak, Harding achieved what many believed to be impossible: complete the triple axel in major competitions in the early ’90s. She was the first American woman to do so, too, and her dramatic rise to prominence is matched only by her staggering fall from grace.

You see, three years after taking the sport by storm, Tonya Harding was found guilty of a malicious ploy to sabotage the career of arch-rival Nancy Kerrigan. Ordering a group of thugs to viciously attack Kerrigan along with her husband Jeff Gillooly – and essentially send her dream of an Olympic medal up in smokes – Harding’s jealously reared its ugly face in 1994. But karma had the final say, given Kerrigan went on to outperform her scheming rival at the main event having only sustained a bruised knee during said attack.

It’s a scandal that’s almost stranger than fiction, and ought to make for compelling drama on the big screen. Margot Robbie is attached to star and produce the Tonya Harding biopic, with support from Bryan Unkeless on behalf of Clubhouse Pictures.

I, Tonya is one movie on a crowded slate for Margot Robbie, who has lined up the one-two blockbuster punch of The Legend of Tarzan and David Ayer’s Suicide Squad in the coming months. »

Craig Gillespie Signs on for "I, Tonya" Starring Margot Robbie

15 June 2016 6:13 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Variety reports that director Craig Gillespie has signed on to direct actress Margot Robbie in the upcoming biopic, "I, Tonya", based on disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding. Clubhouse Pictures' Bryan Unkeless is producing along with Robbie through her banner, LuckyChap Entertainment. Screenwriter Steven Rogers is writing the script and is also on board as a producer. Gillespie's film credits include "Lars And The Real Girl", "Fright Night", "Million Dollar Arm", and this year's "The Finest Hours."

The premise for the film reads:

"Harding rose as one of the world’s top figure skaters after she became the first woman to complete the triple axel move in major competitions, eventually leading her to victory in the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Harding’s stay at the top would not last long, however, as jealously led her to conspire to have her main competition, Nancy Kerrigan, injured prior to the 1994 Winter Olympics."

Robbie will next be seen in Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Legend Of Tarzan", starring Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, and Christoph Waltz. In August, Robbie will play the villainess Harley Quinn in director David Ayer's "Suicide Squad", starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis.

Craig Gillespie to Direct Tonya Harding Biopic Starring Margot Robbie (Exclusive)

14 June 2016 12:45 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Craig Gillespie is on board to direct “I, Tonya,” the biopic about Tonya Harding with Margot Robbie attached to play the disgraced figure skater.

The film is being produced by Bryan Unkeless and his Clubhouse Pictures. Robbie is also involved in producing through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner. Steven Rogers is penning the script and is also producing.

Harding rose as one of the world’s top figure skaters after she became the first woman to complete the triple axel move in major competitions, eventually leading her to victory in the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Harding’s stay at the top would not last long, however, as jealously led her to conspire to have her main competition, Nancy Kerrigan, injured prior to the 1994 Winter Olympics.

During a practice round at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Harding’s husband, Jeff Gillooly, and a group of thugs attacked Kerrigan after her training session, attempting to break her leg. The plan failed, as the men were arrested and Kerrigan only sustained a bruised knee. During Gillooly’s interrogation, he explained how it was his wife’s idea all along.

Kerrigan would go on to compete at the Olympics, winning the silver medal while Harding ended up in eighth place. Following the Olympics, Harding would admit to the conspiracy and, while she never served any jail time, the Usfsa stripped Harding of her 1994 championship title and banned her for life.

The story has never been turned into a movie, but in a recent “30 for 30” piece for Espn, Harding told her side of the story and spurred an interest in the subject. With Robbie and Gillespie now attached to the spec, plenty of suitors are sure to head for the project in the coming weeks.

UTA and CAA are repping the film.

Though Robbie is set to star in two of the summer’s biggest tentpoles — “Legend of Tarzan” and “Suicide Squad” — she has begun to choose roles that are less blockbuster-based. Besides “I, Tonya,” Robbie is also set to star in the Fox Searchlight biopic “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” where she will play the wife of author A.A. Milne, who created “Winnie the Pooh.”

Gillespie broke out with “Lars and the Real Girl.” Other past credits for Gillespie include “Million Dollar Arm” and “The Finest Hours.”

He is repped by UTA and Management 360.

Glenn Hauman: Neil Gaiman Does Not Need A Pity Hugo

28 April 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Remember this class act, America?

This is Jeff Gillooly. You may remember him from the 90’s. He “masterminded” the hit on Nancy Kerrigan’s knee on the eve of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1994, to prevent Kerrigan from skating and making the U.S. Olympic Team, for the benefit of his ex-wife, Tonya Harding.

What does this have to do with the Hugo Awards? Well, it should be obvious. Theodore Beale, by slating again with his Rabid Puppies, has decided to kneecap the 2016 Hugo Awards… and just to add to the fun, this time he’s trying to create poison pills by nominating famous authors in some categories, so he can take the credit if they win, and cry persecution if they are rejected with the rest of his slate.

John Scalzi, talking about the Hugo mess on his blog, takes the position:

Casting Nancy Kerrigan

24 March 2016 4:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Kieran, here. It was announced earlier this week that Margot Robbie would be playing figure skater turned tabloid fodder Tonya Harding in a biopic titled I, Tonya. On a personal note, I distinctly remember my mother voicing her distaste about Harding being on the cover of nearly a dozen tabloid magazines in my pediatrician’s office when I was a kid. It was everywhere and given how ubiquitous the story became, it’s kind of surprising that it’s taken this long for it to get the cinematic treatment. Well…the earnest, theatrical cinematic treatment. There was a hastily assembled television movie which aired in April of 1994 (the Harding scandal was at the 1994 Winter Olympics). It features Heather Langenkamp (yes, Nancy from A Nightmare on Elm Street) as Nancy Kerrigan, just in case you were wondering.

A director has yet to be attached to the project or even named to be in consideration, »

Margot Robbie cast as Tonya Harding in 'I, Tonya'

The crazy tale of the 1994 rivalry between figure skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan looks to be getting the big screen treatment. Deadline is reporting that Margot Robbie has signed on to play Harding in the film I, Tonya.  The movie will follow the champion skater’s up and downs and, of course, the infamous moment in which her husband Jeff Gillooly hired goons to break Kerrigan’s leg at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Kerrigan only suffered bruises as a result of the beating and was able to compete at the Lillehammer Olympics, winning a silver medal.  Harding, on the other hand, came in eighth at the Olympics. In the months that followed, Harding would plead guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution and was banned for life from U.S. Figure Skating Association. She would also receive probation, community serve and a hefty fine. Gillooly and the  other »

Margot Robbie to Play Tonya Harding in Biopic 'I, Tonya'

Margot Robbie is playing antiheroine Harley Quinn in this summer's "Suicide Squad," and her next project centers around an equally complicated figure: She's reportedly attached to star in a biopic about disgraced ice skater Tonya Harding.

According to Deadline, Robbie snagged the lead in in "I, Tonya," a flick about Harding's rise to fame in the world of figure skating in the late '80s and early '90s, and her subsequent fall from grace after the Nancy Kerrigan scandal. Harding became a superstar thanks to her feisty spirit and undeniable talent, and was the first female ice skater to land a triple axle in competition. She was expected to challenge fellow U.S. star Kerrigan for the gold medal at the 1994 Olympics, but at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships earlier that year, Kerrigan was clubbed in the knee by an unknown assailant.

It was soon discovered that Harding's ex-husband, »

Margot Robbie in talks to play disgraced Us ice-skater Tonya Harding

Deadline has revealed that Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad, The Wolf of Wall Street) is in talks to portray Tonya Harding in a new film called I, Tonya, which will chart the ice-skater’s rise to fame and fall into disgrace.

The film, written by Steven Rogers (Christmas With The Coopers), tells the unthinkable story of Harding’s career in ice skating, where she rose to prominence in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s after her checkered upbringing and rough childhood in Oregon. By 1991, she had risen to the very top of the figure ice skating charts and she became the first American female to do a triple axel in some major tournaments. In 1991, she finished in 2nd at the World Championships, and won the Us Champion crown.

Then in 1994, her career imploded when her husband and some hired thugs tried to break the leg of competitor skater Nancy Kerrigan. They »

A few years back, as part of their excellent, ongoing documentary series "30 For 30," Espn unveiled "The Price of Gold," a look at the scandal that made headlines around the world when in 1994, when figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked and injured by her rival Tonya Harding. It was a story that had it all — sports, jealousy, high stakes intrigue — but as the documentary by Nanette Burnstein ("Going The Distance," "American Teen") revealed, there was even more going on beneath the surface. Now, the tale will be dramatized in "I, Tonya" with a rather interesting choice for the lead. Deadline reports that Margot Robbie will take the role of Tonya Harding in the picture. Screenwriter Steve Rogers interviewed Harding and her husband Jeff Gillooly as he put together his script, getting the perspective of an athlete who was well outside the wealthy world that Olympians are often part of.
