AMPAS explains 'Warrior' decision to BAFTA

LONDON -- The British Academy of Film and Television Arts said Thursday that the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has explained why Asif Kapadia's The Warrior was rejected as the U.K. entry for best foreign-language film honors. The Hindi-language movie, which has been replaced in the category by Welsh-language film Eldra, initially was ruled out by AMPAS because it is not in a language of the country of origin. In a letter to BAFTA film committee chairman Duncan Kenworthy, AMPAS executive director Bruce Davis clarified the Academy's position, saying that because The Warrior was filmed in India with non-British actors, the association with Britain is too tenuous for the film to be considered British. BAFTA has drawn attention to the fact that AMPAS previously accepted an Australian film with primarily Cantonese dialogue and another one in Spanish. »

Searchlight nears DNA match

LONDON -- DNA Films, the U.K. lottery-funded filmmaking franchise, is expected to seal a deal within weeks with Fox Searchlight Pictures to establish a joint venture to produce as many as 12 movies during the next five years, sources close to the deal said Monday. The franchise, run by producers Duncan Kenworthy and Andrew Macdonald, is also expected to sign up Allon Reich, currently head of Miramax Films' London outpost, to run the new 50-50 joint venture with Macdonald. Kenworthy would remain a partner in the new setup and produce projects for the venture alongside Macdonald and Reich. Reich did not return calls by press time. He joined Miramax's London operation in March 2000. »
