Ruby Sparks interview with Zoe Kazan

11 August 2012 5:17 AM, PDT | Upcoming-Movies.com | See recent Upcoming-Movies.com news »

Zoe Kazan discusses "Ruby Sparks" There's no doubt that Zoe Kazan comes from entertainment royalty. Her grandfather was Elia Kazan, the legendary director of stage and screen. Her father is the successful screenwriter Nicholas Kazan. Her boyfriend is the actor Paul Dano. And she herself has had a lot of success as an actor, both on the stage and in movies. But her new film, "Ruby Sparks," is different, because not only does she star opposite Dano in the movie, but she also wrote the screenplay, which ended up being directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the co-directing duo who brought "Little Miss Sunshine" to life. In the film, Dano plays Calvin, a very successful, very unhappy young writer who hasn't been able to create anything new in years. Until, that is, his therapist (Elliott Gould) gives him an assignment, and it's something so simple that Calvin has no problem getting to work. »

If you've watched the trailer for "Ruby Sparks," you may have recognized Zoe Kazan from "Revolutionary Road," where she plays the girl from the secretary pool who beds Leonardo DiCaprio. You may have also noticed her name in the credits for "Ruby Sparks" as the film's writer.

It just so happens that Kazan is a bit of a legacy. Her parents, Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord, are accomplished screenwriters, and her grandfather, Elia Kazan, is Elia Kazan.

We briefly spoke with Kazan about her passion for writing and how she and real life boyfriend Paul Dano ended up in the screenplay.

When did writing begin for you?

Ever since I could hold a crayon basically. My parents are writers, and I think I had that example. I always loved books. That was a huge part of my internal life, whatever I was reading. It was always something that I did. »

The actress, best known for her supporting turns in "Revolutionary Road" and "Meek's Cutoff," is the offspring of two Academy Award-nominated screenwriters, Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord; granddaughter to legendary director Elia Kazan; and has already seen a play of hers premiere off-Broadway. With the high-concept romantic comedy "Ruby Sparks" (out today via Fox Searchlight), Kazan now joins the likes of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon -- artists remarkably adept both behind and in front of the camera.
