The Crystal Maze 2017 episode 4 review

Louisa Mellor Jul 13, 2017

The Crystal Maze reaches the end of its celebrity run with a couple of Loose Women, an EastEnder, a Northerner and a class clown…

In the genus of UK gameshow hosts, Richard Ayoade defies sub-categorisation. He’s not a Blood-Drinking Reptilian Overlord (Chris Tarrant, Noel Edmonds, Eamonn Holmes), nor is he Someone Who Would Be Driving A Foxtons Mini If They Weren’t On TV (Patrick Mulhern, Davina McCall, Paddy McGuinness, Vernon Kay). He’s not a Barrymore, a Bowen or a Les Dennis, and neither is he a Grandad Who 100% Killed Someone In The War (William G. Stewart, Des Lynam, Bruce Forsyth).

Bake Off: the public revolt – what we learned in batter week

In the week the BBC lost Bake Off, Mel and Sue were good eggs, Paul pulled it out of his arse, Mary Berry was an assassin – and the public’s cry rang out. Is this the shape of things to come?

Not mentioning the week’s biggest Bake Off controversy would be like a zookeeper trying to ignore elephants in the room. The some-would-say-ironically-named Love productions, who developed the show with the BBC, have sold it to Channel 4 for £25m, and lost key talent in the process. Most people assume Hollywood will live up to his starry name and follow the dough. Not Mel and Sue though, who quit in response to the news the show was leaving its spiritual home. They chose the dusty grail, for they know the true value of things. They are both expected to be replaced by Vernon Kay.

12 (sort of) memorable soap star singles

Jenny Morrill Sep 6, 2016

Den Of Geek raises a glass to some lesser-known soap star pop singles, from Coronation Street to Neighbours and more...

“Do you remember the guy who played that guy in that thing? His song was good wasn't it?”

The above is an example of a conversation regularly heard in our house. The only variants are that sometimes it was 'that girl from that thing', and a lot of the time the song was far from good.

Well sod it – I think we as a nation need to have more discussions about Craig McLachlan and Stefan Dennis. It's the only way our society will grow. So here are 12 songs from Soapland that weren't done by Kylie, Jason, or Kylie and Jason.

1. Kevin Kennedy (Curly Watts) – Bulldog Nation

Here we see Coronation Street's finest and supermarket manager extraordinaire with an indie effort from 2000. Did You Know - Kennedy

Car-crash TV: six celebrity sports flops

As ITV axes The Drive, we look back at a squad of shows that also ran out of juice, from Tumble to The Games

The wheels have fallen off ITV’s Drive, the celebrity driving game in which Angus Deayton, Mariella Frostrup and Louis Walsh put the pedal to the metal in the name of small-screen entertainment.

The good news for ITV was that it proved as popular as BBC2’s Top Gear. The bad news was the Top Gear we’re talking about is the old one, pre-2002, before Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman turned it into something worth watching.

Vernon Kay's Top Gear rival The Drive hits the skids

ITV show featuring celebrities including Louis Walsh and Mariella Frostrup will not return for a second series

Chris Evans’s new Top Gear is set to face one fewer rival after ITV moved to axe The Drive after just one series.

The Vernon Kay-fronted show, which has been called an extended version of Top Gear’s “star in a reasonably priced car” segment, features celebrities including former X Factor judge Louis Walsh, presenter Mariella Frostrup and rapper Professor Green racing each other in different cars each week.

Drive review – even Top Gear fans will be bored silly

Whose desperate idea was it to extend ‘Star in a reasonably priced car’ to an hour-long show? There’s more fun to be had at home playing Scalextric. Plus, How Not to Do Diy

It must have sounded like a winner at the first production meeting. ITV are in desperate need of a show for petrolheads, so let’s adapt one of the most popular elements of Top Gear and turn it into an hour-long programme. “What could possibly go wrong?” as the luckless Vernon Kay says near the start of Drive (ITV1). A question to which the answer is invariably “almost everything”.

There was a very good reason “Star in a reasonably priced car” was kept down to a five-minute slot, which is that it was actually quite boring watching someone drive round in circles. It might be fun to do, but TV fails to give any real impression

Brian Dowling recruits fellow Big Brother star Narinder Kaur as a bridesmaid for his wedding

The Big Brother bond between Brian Dowling and Narinder Kaur seems to be unbreakable, with the latter set to be the presenter's bridesmaid today (July 30).

The pair took part in the second series of Big Brother back in 2001, and immediately became inseparable. They were mostly seen gossiping about their fellow housemates - including Amma Antwi-Agyei and Dean O'Loughlin - and even developed nicknames and facial expressions to describe the poor unsuspecting contestants.

Dowling is believed to be holding his wedding with long-term partner Arthur Gourounlian in a country house just outside Dublin, after the couple legally tied the knot in London a few months ago.

Explaining his decision and concerns over the same-sex marriage vote in Ireland, the TV presenter said: "We did it in London as we didn't know how the law would go in Ireland. We wanted to make sure we got it right.

"All my friends and family are coming.

The broadcaster regained the rights to the sport in 2013 from the BBC.

NFL's 96th season is scheduled to begin on September 10, with the annual kickoff game featuring the defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Love Island 2005: What happened to winner Jayne Middlemiss? Or love god Lee Sharpe? We find out!

Remember the first ever Love Island with its seemingly clueless single celebrities constantly bickering on a tumultuous and stormy (literally and metaphorically) Fijian island?

Even the show's co-hosts Kelly Brook and Patrick Kielty were baying for one another's blood when Kielty decided to declare during one live show that Brook had previously dated contestant Paul Danan.

Other memorable highlights included Abi Titmuss becoming more and more enraged as Fran Cosgrave repeatedly referred to her as Vanessa Feltz, swiftly followed by a tipsy and uncouth Rebecca Loos letting rip.

The series aired almost exactly a decade ago, so we found ourselves wondering - whatever happened to eventual winner Jayne Middlemiss? And the Love Island love god that was Lee Sharpe?

As the new non-celebrity series currently enjoys its ITV2 revival, we find out what the 12 star contestants have gone on to do since their 2005 stint below:

Jayne Middlemiss

"Our survey says... bye" - ITV plans to rest Vernon Kay's All Star Family Fortunes

Vernon Kay's All Star Family Fortunes will be missing from the schedules for a while, as ITV plans to put the show on an extended break.

The celebrity spin-off of the popular format was revived in 2006 and recently completed its 12th series, with an average of 3.3 million viewers tuning in over the ten episodes.

Broadcast reports that the show is unlikely to be seen on-screen again until late 2016 at the earliest, with a further delay until 2017 also said to be a possibility.

"Family Fortunes is an old favourite and remains very much part of the ITV entertainment slate," an ITV spokesperson said. "We haven't got any episodes scheduled at present but we definitely will be seeing it back very soon."

The final new episode featuring talk show host Matthew Wright and Emmerdale actress Charley Webb is scheduled to air this Sunday, June 14.

Regular editions of the show last aired

Jessica Wright embarrassed by Joey Essex snog on Celebrity Juice

Jessica Wright is tricked into revealing she once snogged Joey Essex by Keith Lemon on tonight's Celebrity Juice .

The Towie star is quizzed by an inquisitive Keith, who inquires: "Didn't you once have a romantic entanglement with the King of Reem - Joey Essex?"

A sheepish Wright replies with a resounding: "No!"

But Keith presses on regardless before producing photographic evidence, saying: "You did, we've got a picture [the picture appears on screen]… What's going on there then?

"You just blowing in his mouth? Using him like a whistle?"

Covering her face with her hands in embarrassment, Wright replies: "You've absolutely killed me! I might as well walk out of the building right now!"

Keith persists: "Well tell us what was going on there?"

"That was about 5 years ago and it was just a really random kiss, and lets not even talk about that - what's next?" Wright replies, keen to move the subject on.

Vernon Kay would "seriously consider" taking part in Strictly Come Dancing

Vernon Kay has revealed that he would "seriously consider" taking part in Strictly Come Dancing.

The presenter told Loose Women that he already feels like part of the family as he's on set so often with wife Tess Daly, who co-hosts the Saturday night show with Claudia Winkleman.

He said: "If they asked me, I would seriously consider it."

He added that he has "never, ever had one conversation" about joining the show, explaining: "I think it's because I'm there on a regular basis. They must feel like I'm part of the family.

"It's been 11, 12 years that they've been doing it and I'm always down there causing a nuisance. It's such a good show."

Kay also revealed that he likes to recreate Strictly at home with his daughters Phoebe and Amber when Daly is out at work.

"It's quite nice that we know when Strictly Come Dancing is [scheduled]," he said.

Bradley Walsh might be Britain's greatest gameshow host

Keep It in the Family is up against Strictly, but with Walsh’s amiable schtick, this garish quiz provides a masterclass in hosting

ITV’s Sunday night gameshow Keep It in the Family shouldn’t work. It’s a garish mishmash of other, better programmes. There’s a bit of 3-2-1. There’s some Kids Say the Funniest Things. There’s probably enough Generation Game to form the basis of a relatively promising lawsuit. This, along with the fact that ITV broadcasts it when the rest of the world is off watching Strictly on the other side, all points to the assumption that the whole thing is an unwatchable mess.

And, with a different host, it might be. If Vernon Kay or Stephen Mulhern had been put in charge of Keep It in the Family, the whole thing would curl up and die of its own awkwardness within about 15 seconds.

Gabby Logan confident about Splash return

Gabby Logan is confident 'Splash!' will return after the Brazil 2016 Olympics. The 41-year-old TV presenter hosted Tom Daley's celebrity diving show alongside Vernon Kay until it was cancelled in February after a two-series run, but she thinks it would be great if the programme had a ''little break'' and then returned to the small screen following the South American sporting spectacle. She exclusively told Bang Showbiz: ''It's definitely not coming back at the moment. I think a lot of it is Tom's diary, next year is the year before the Olympics and his diary will start to get full
