“To this day Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron remains a crazy film” – Subhash K Jha reviews this 1983 release

3 November 2012 8:25 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Starring: Naseerudin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Bhakti Bharve, Pankaj Kapoor, Satish Shah

Directed by Kundan Shah

It was the year before Mrs India Gandhi was assassinated. The nation was not in the best of moods. There were raised voices and frayed tempers prevalent across the nation as corruption and intolerance reached an all-time high. Given the milieu Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron(Jbdy) chose to laugh away the bruise…There is a sharp zaniness about Jbdy which serves as a scathing antidote to the growing sense of collective dismay that the nation faced as extremism and inflation hit the nation hurling it towards damnation.

Many regard Jbdy as the funniest Hindi film ever made. I am not too sure. I sense of deep somberness behind the giggles and guffaws. The plot about two out-of-work photographers named, hold your legal notices, Vinod Chopra(Naseruddin Shah) and Sudhir Mishra(Ravi Baswani) has episodes of »

A visibly upset Naseeruddin Shah (who was the lead star along with Ravi Baswani) was very vocal about his displeasure as he said that he was very much pissed off with the way Nfdc has released the film without any publicity at all. On the other hand, Satish Kaushik (who played one of the pivotal characters in the film) stated that one does wish they had applied more thrust to the marketing and release. At the same time, he also added that one needs budgets for that which Nfdc of course won't have. »

Remake a South Indian Film – The Secret to Success

20 July 2012 8:27 AM, PDT | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

The influence of South Indian cinema on Hindi over the years had gradually increased to a whole new level today. In the 90s you simply got accustomed to faces like Nagarjuna and Rajnikanth whose films without fail got dubbed in Hindi. Subhash K Jha Reviews Gali Gali Chor Hai

3 February 2012 10:49 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Starring: Akshaye Khanna, Shriya Saran, Satish Kaushik, Mugdha Godse, Anu Kapoor

Directed by Rumi Jaffery

Certainly Gali Gali Chor Hai(Ggch) must have sounded amusing and topical on paper. It is a savagely stinging satire on the harassment of the average law-abiding middleclass man, played with arresting earnestness by Akshaye Khanna, in the hands of various touts, middlemen, law enforcers, goons and politicians all of whom infest the tranquil city of Bhopal with the destructive determination of termites eating into a ‘system’ that has long ceased to be if any consequence , moral or ethical.

While the script has some sparkling vignettes and scenes taken from the portrait of a common man trapped in the wheels of a fluctuating fortune, the treatment of the theme of corruption is staid, »
