While David Crane and Marta Kauffman’s Friends has officially been off the air for two decades, it’s hard not to miss the camaraderie, meaningful connections, and punchlines. Considered one of the most rewatchable shows out there, the 1990s sitcom centered on a group of six friends living in the heart of the Big Apple. Needless to say, no one told us that we would miss Friends this hard; you can chock it up to nostalgia or its massive cultural impact, but the show left a crater-sized hole in viewers’ hearts. But here’s the good news: lots of shows have borrowed vital elements from Friends over the years, from How I Met Your Mother to Happy Endings, as tales of tight-knit friend groups have dominated the small screen.

Characters on TV shows can vanish without explanation due to various reasons, leaving audiences puzzled. Some shows fail to acknowledge a character's absence, causing confusion and discontent among fans. Disappearing characters like Ben Geller and Tina Pinciotti left viewers wondering about their unresolved storylines.
While many TV shows have introduced plenty of interesting personalities, some characters mysteriously disappeared from a show without any explanation. There are plenty of reasons why a character might not return to a show, whether that be the actor deciding to move on to another project, a change in production or writers, or simply because said character isn't needed anymore. When a character does leave a TV show, however, not all of them get the send-off they deserve.
Of course, from a creative point of view, if a character needs to be removed from a TV show, it'll happen. However, not every show bothers to explain...

Some fan-favorite TV characters have forgettable introductions, but become popular due to longer arcs and interactions with the main cast. Characters like Gunther in Friends and Jeremy in Phineas and Ferb started off as clichéd characters but developed to have complete storylines. Characters like Felicity in Arrow and Eddison in Game of Thrones originally had minor roles but became fan favorites through strong performances and unique personalities.
Some fan-favorite characters from popular TV shows have remarkably forgettable introductions, where they are first acknowledged with a casual comment or are simply seen standing in the background. Showrunners have been known to turn characters who were intended to only appear once into longer arcs due to their popularity. However, even some of these characters had memorable first episodes that made them popular.
What is more interesting is when a character who wasn't even intended to be important in the episode they were in becomes a fan-favorite.

Ross Geller's fashion choices in Friends reflect his propensity for embarrassing himself and becoming the punchline of his own jokes. His outfits showcase his bumbling nature and highlight his tendency to stumble into comedic scenarios. Despite his repeated embarrassment, Ross remains a delightfully brilliant but painfully foolish character on the show.
Ross Geller’s fashion sense might be the worst in Friends, and his funniest outfit mishaps often showcase his knack for making a fool of himself despite his best intentions. Throughout the show, his earnest yet clumsy endeavors lead to numerous moments of self-inflicted embarrassment. Vividly accentuated by his array of fashion choices, these mishaps effectively illustrate his bumbling nature, a quality that’s surprisingly endearing beneath all the humiliation.
His attire consistently showcases Ross's many character flaws in Friends, along with his knack for inadvertently becoming the punchline of his own jokes. Whether it's a fashion faux pas or an elaborate costume,...

Matthew Perry's line delivery helped Tom Selleck imitate Chandler's sarcastic humor in Friends. Chandler's sense of humor made him a memorable character who bounced off others in hilarious ways. Without Perry's talent, Friends wouldn't have been the same, and his comedic legacy will live on.
Actor Tom Selleck has recalled a key way in which Friends star Matthew Perry helped him with one specific line during his time on the series. Selleck appeared in the show as Richard Burke, a recurring ophthalmologist who was in a relationship with Monica for a time. In season 2, episode 20, "The One Where Old Yeller Dies," Richard begins to emulate Chandler (Perry) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) as part of an ongoing gag.
Speaking with USA Today, Selleck remembered how, while working with the cast of Friends for that episode, Perry assisted him in delivering a line in a convincingly Chandler-like way. The actor explained...

- Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green was a major risk for the show, but her casting paid off and helped make Friends a huge success. - Friends captured the young adult experience and made audiences laugh with its memorable characters and their quirks. - The cancellation of Muddling Through gave Aniston the opportunity to play Rachel, which not only helped Friends but also launched her career as a renowned actress.
It's hard to imagine Friends without Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, and though the casting definitely paid off, it was one of the show's biggest risks. Since it's release in 1994, Friends has become an entertainment and pop culture staple. The sitcom's premise is simple: six 20-something friends living in New York City and navigating their adult lives. Despite what seems like a classic premise, Friends was able to become one of the most watched TV shows of all time.

The cast of Friends didn't reunite for the Emmys' Matthew Perry tribute, and two producers of the awards show. First airing in 1994, the hit sitcom created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman would go on to become one of the most popular sitcoms of a generation, following a group of friends as they go about their daily lives in New York City. Perry played Chandler Bing on the series, but the actor tragically passed away on October 28 last year.
After the 2024 Emmy Awards' touching tribute to Perry on January 15, producers Jesse Collins and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay explain in an interview with THR why the core Friends cast, including Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Courteney Cox, didn't reunite for the emotional moment. According to the producers, not enough time has passed since Perry's death. Read the comments from Collins and Rouzan-Clay below:
Rouzan-Clay: It’s still very fresh for them.

Joey's character in Friends was originally meant to be flirtatious and shallow, but not unintelligent. The decision to make Joey dumber on Friends was intentional, as the creators wanted to differentiate him from Chandler. Changing Joey's character to be less intelligent helped balance out the comedic dynamic of the group and contributed to the show's long-term success.
One crucial change to the character of Joey Tribbiani early on in Friends saved the hit sitcom in the long run. Friends ran for ten seasons from 1994 to 2004 and remains one of the most famous and successful sitcoms of all time. Its focus on six different types of 20-somethings trying to navigate life together made the premise especially relatable to its audience. One of the more popular of the titular friends is Joey, played by Matt LeBlanc.
In the beginning of Friends, Joey is introduced as a suave aspiring actor from a big Italian-American family.

Amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas, Jewish entertainment figures have come together to issue an open letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences criticizing their exclusion from being specified as an underrepresented group.
“An inclusion effort that excludes Jews is both steeped in and misunderstands antisemitism,” reads the letter, organized by the group Jew in the City’s Hollywood Bureau for Jewish Representation. “Jewish people being excluded from the Motion Picture Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards is discriminating against a protected class by invalidating their historic and genetic identity.”
The Academy’s standards, unveiled in 2020 as part of its Aperture 2025 diversity initiative, describes a number of identities that it considers “underrepresented groups”: women, LGBTQ+, having cognitive or physical difficulties or being deaf or hard of hearing, as well as underrepresented racial or ethnic groups. A dark Friends theory suggests that the entire show takes place inside Phoebe's head, watching from a sidewalk, making her tragic backstory even darker. Phoebe's oddities and traumatic past make her the odd one out in the group, which adds weight to the theory. The theory provides a logical argument for the inconsistencies in Phoebe's life and explains some of the more ridiculous elements of the show.

Norman Lear, who recently passed away at the age of 101, transformed the network television sitcom in the 1970s by confronting America's cultural contentiousness head-on and daring viewers to laugh at a bigot like Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" or the white-folks-hating George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons." People were more than ready to accept this challenge. "All in the Family" was the top-rated show on television for six of its nine seasons, while "The Jeffersons" ranked in the top 10 for four of its remarkable 11 seasons. Along with "Good Times," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "One Day at a Time" and "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear basically dominated the decade. It was a creative hot streak that's never been matched and one that Lear could never replicate.
After the 1978 premiere of "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear went ice cold. "The Baxters" and "Palmerstown, USA" only hung around for two seasons, while "Hanging In" and "aka...

New AI-generated art imagines the six core members of the Friends cast as adorable toddlers, including a "Fat Monica" version of Courteney Cox's character. Lisa Kudrow's real-life sister played her double for Ursula scenes on Friends, using split-screen or by shooting both parts separately and editing them together. Kudrow did not enjoy filming scenes with both characters and found it tricky to shoot, but the awkwardness did not translate to the final product. Ursula Buffay originated on the show Mad About You, and her existence on Friends was a crossover created because Kudrow was already recurring on both shows.

Many famous actors auditioned for Friends and could have replaced the beloved cast members, resulting in a drastically different show. The casting process for the main Friends cast members was not easy, with some roles requiring thousands of auditions and actors turning down the roles. Matthew Perry's portrayal of Chandler on Friends became iconic, embodying sharp wit and deadpan sarcasm, and his relationship with Monica Geller became central to the show's storyline. Perry's casting as Chandler was not a straightforward process, as producers searched for an actor with the perfect blend of comedic timing and sarcasm, and Perry's commitment to another pilot initially complicated things. Other actors, such as Jon Cryer, Craig Bierko, and Jon Favreau, were considered for the role of Chandler but didn't ultimately get cast. Despite missing out on Friends, these actors found success in their own careers in TV and film.

The cultural impact of David Crane and Marta Kauffman's Friends is almost immeasurable. From haircuts and fashion trends to quotable one-liners and present-day memes ("Pivot! Pivot!"), the beloved series has remained in the spotlight for almost three decades. The series debuted September 22, 1994, to somewhat mixed reviews, but the show was quickly embraced by audiences and became one of the most successful and long-running sitcoms to grace the small screen. With 65.9 million viewers, the series finale was the fourth most-watched television finale ever. And it was a spectacular finale. Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) finally became parents and made the big move to the suburbs, and Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel's (Jennifer Aniston) will-they-won't-they finally concluded with yes, they will. It was exactly what audiences at the time wanted. But is it what Rachel deserved? After ten seasons of immense personal growth from an unhappy runaway bride to...

The entertainment world is still reeling from the sudden loss of Matthew Perry, the affable charmer who rose to fame as Chandler Bing on "Friends." The loss is greater considering that Perry was only 54 years old at the time of his passing, and how much closer fans felt towards him after his incredibly honest memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," came out just last year. Perry's autobiography received most of its press due to Perry revealing, in great detail, his severe problems with alcohol and substance abuse. The book helped make the man behind the curtain, so to speak, just as likable as the onscreen persona that he'll be most remembered for.
It's hard to imagine anyone else playing Chandler Bing at this point, and Perry wound up bringing a lot of his personal life to the part. As the show was ramping up for its first season,...

I watched Friends when it originally aired. I was in college in the 1990s, when the sitcom launched and became a cultural phenomenon. I carved Thursday nights out of my calendar, reserving the 8 p.m. hour for my Friends obsession, refusing to go out until after my weekly visit with Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe. I was experiencing many of the same things my Friends were: first love, first job and learning who I was — a little Ocd (Monica), deflecting (Chandler) and a dash responsible dork (Ross).
