Marc Maron Recalls Getting Animated With Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist

Marc Maron Recalls Getting Animated With Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist
Way before The Sopranos‘ Dr. Melfi and Web Therapy‘s Fiona Wallace, the go-to TV therapist was Dr. Katz.

And in his half-hour Comedy Central series, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, the good doctor — voiced by comedian Jonathan Katz — served as a sounding board for several of the biggest names in stand-up. In animated form, funnymen and -women like Ray Romano, Louis C.K., Joan Rivers, Bob Odenkirk and their ilk would visit Katz’s office and do bits as they sought his professional help. Eventually, the guest cast included actors like The X-FilesDavid Duchovny, Stranger ThingsWinona Ryder, Law & Order:

Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist is back, baby!

  • JoBlo
Oh my God, this is exciting news! Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist is coming back! Hell yeah! If you don't remember the show, it was a cartoon (utilizing SquiggleVision) that ran on Comedy Central from 1995-2005 that followed a balding, monotone doctor (the eponymous Dr. Katz, voiced by stand-up comedian Jonathan Katz) who talked to other comedians and celebrities about their problems. While it was always... Read More...

Hank Green Establishing ‘Internet Creators Guild’ Nonprofit To Champion The Creator Community

The YouTube star Hank Green, who established the popular vlogbrothers channel with his brother, John, in 2007, as well as VidCon -- the world’s largest online video convention -- in 2010, will launch this month a nonprofit organization called the Internet Creators Guild (Icg) that aims to be a resource and support system for digital influencers.

Icg will provide creators with business and contracts advice, and also interact with the press as well as video platforms on behalf of creators, according to Fast Company, which was first to report the news. The organization will be funded by a grant from VidCon, as well as membership dues, which are $60 per year. Its first order of business will be creating a website that will comprise basic information, including how to deal with copyright strikes, when to ban commenters, how to use copyrighted music, and how to best work with brands and MCNs.

Laura Chernikoff, who has worked with the Green brothers for years and currently serves as the guest manager at VidCon, will leave the company after next week’s gathering to serve full-time as the executive director of Icg. While Green won’t work directly with Icg day-to-day, he will serve on a separate advisory board. Helming the organization alongside Chernikoff will be a board of directors comprising six bold-faced YouTube stars, including: filmmaker Anna Akana, gaming creators Satchell Drakes and Aureylian, vloggers Ashley Mardell and Olan Rogers, and beauty guru Wendy Ayche. Actor and entertainment lawyer Jonathan Katz will serve on the board as well.

Jonathan Katz on the legacy of 'Dr. Katz' and his new album 'Dr. Katz Live'

In between Mystery Science Theater 3000 and South Park, Comedy Central's biggest breakout was a cheaply made animated show called Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Co-created by comedian Jonathan Katz and animator/producer Tom Snyder, it starred Katz as the titular shrink and his relationships with his receptionist (Laura Silverman) and his son (H. Jon Benjamin, now of Archer and Bob's Burgers fame). The show was fleshed out by comedians like Ray Romano, Dom Irrera, Dave Attell, Louis C.K., Denis Leary, Jon Stewart, and Janeane Garofalo. The show last aired in 2002, but a few years back, Katz dusted off his

Bob’s Burgers has already been renewed for a fifth season – which is exciting! But we’re still pumped about this season, which premieres Sunday.

To whet our appetites, we talked to showrunner Loren Bouchard and star H. Jon Benjamin about what plots, guests, and holiday-themed high jinks we can expect from the Fox comedy’s fourth year.

Let’s start with the premiere: ”The family goes camping,” says Bouchard. “But it ends poorly for them.” Adds Benjamin, “Diarrhea is involved. But it’s in a river and disperses quickly. And there wasn’t a reservoir as far as I know,

  • Pop2it
Jack Osbourne, son of rocker Ozzy Osbourne and "The Talk" host Sharon Osbourne, recently announced he has multiple sclerosis. The reality star joins a long list of celebrities from music, politics, television and film that have been diagnosed with the degenerative nerve disorder.

"I was just angry and frustrated and kept thinking, 'Why now?' I've got a family and that's what's supposed to be the most important thing," Osbourne says.

Osbourne was diagnosed just two weeks after the birth of his first child, Pearl Clementine, with fiancée Lisa Stelly.

Interestingly, Ozzy was also once diagnosed with Ms in 1992 -- he even announced his retirement and played a farewell tour. But six months later, the Osbournes learned that it was a misdiagnosis.

Other celebrities with multiple sclerosis:

Montel Williams (born July 3, 1956) - former talk show host

David "Squiggy" Lander (June 22, 1947) - actor, comedian and musician

Jonathan Katz (Dec. 1, 1946) - comedian

Take a Ride on the Explosion Bus

Another new web series crossed our path today, and while it's more on the humor side of the horror-comedy sub-genre, given that it tackles everyday horrors and allows viewers to approach their most acute fears with laughter, we thought it well worth sharing.

Written and directed by Tom Snyder, creator of Comedy Central’s "Dr. Katz", Explosion Bus stars comedians Jonathan Katz and Tom Leopold. It's the story of two unqualified heroes who take on the cruel host of America’s most popular TV show, a fictional version of "American Idol". In their bus with their "staff", they cross the country making talent audition house calls. The humor is dry, the dialogue is conversational, and the women are beautiful. Just like real life!

As Katie Covett, executive producer of Explosion Bus, explains it: "The horror that pervades Explosion Bus is subtle but very much present. Eb confronts everyday horrors: the

Animated Teaser Trailer: Mike Salva’s Pound Dogs

The above embedded video is more of a TV trailer than a film trailer, but it’s all hilarious. Mike Salva‘s Pound Dogs follows the minimalist adventures of dogs locked up at the local pound, desperately waiting to be adopted. To relieve the boredom, they resort to fun dog activities such as rubbing one’s butt along the floor, wearing sombreros and confessing their love of eating cat poop.

Salva has animated a 13-minute pilot episode for a potential series for Pound Dogs. The short film features the voice work of comedians Ryan Williams and Sean Parrott; cartoon voice actors Andy Merrill (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Samantha Newark (Jem); and singer/music producer/filmmaker Steve Taylor.

Pound Dogs, the full short, will be screening at the upcoming NY Television Festival on Wed., Sep. 21 at 6:15 p.m. and Fri., Sep. 23 at 9:00 p.

Can Cornstarch Contain Future Oil Disasters?

It took months for Bp to figure out how to stop oil from spewing out of the Deepwater Horizon site during last year's infamous disaster, and not before the oil company tried everything from shooting junk down into the leaky pipe (the "junk shot") to tapping Kevin Costner for advice. (Not that you would know any of this, based solely on its recent financial statements.) Next time around, Bp might just want to try cornstarch.

That's because researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Lab and Washington University recently discovered that cornstarch may be the key to a new mud recipe that could plug up oil leaks when shot into leaky pipelines (the "top kill" method). This is similar to the technique that Bp used to plug its leak--the oil company pumped heavy mud into the wellbore until it finally stanched the oil flow. But the addition of cornstarch to the mud mix could be more effective.

AfterElton Briefs: "90210"'s Trevor Donovan Loves His Story, Scott Evans Bombs On "Rubicon," and Fran Drescher's New Talk Show

Just a few Canadian things I'm thankful for.

Today is a special day north of the Yankee border, and so we wish our Canadian readers Happy Thanksgiving, and in the United States it's National Coming Out Day and Columbus Day. GLAAD has issued an action alert to pressure Universal Pictures remove the "electric cars are gay" joke from The Dilemma. This is an issue we first voiced a concern about three weeks ago. But industry insiders say that Ron Howard is a big enough name that he probably has the final decision on what gets cut. Honestly, I'm less concerned about it being in the film than I am about having the joke showing up in a green band trailer for all audiences. So Tom Ford couldn't have a gay kiss in his green band trailer for A Single Man, but you can have a nasty gay joke and still

2010 Nevada City Film Festival: Official Lineup

Nestled in the foothills of northern California, the Nevada City Film Festival has evolved from a locals-only fest into a four-day international smorgasbord of short films, plus a couple of features thrown in for good measure. There’s also filmmaking panels, award ceremonies, a live comedy show and some very special guests.

This year, Ncff welcomes Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim of the Adult Swim hit Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! On the 21st, they’ll be screening a very special selection of shorts and music videos from the show.

The features they’re screening are Brett Haley’s The New Year, which stars indie breakout actress Trieste Kelly Dunn (Vacation!); Stuck! by underground bad boy director Steve Balderson; and the innovative animated film Mars, directed by Geoff Marslett, who way back in the day (1999) directed the underground music video Monkey vs. Robot for James Kolchaka.

Short Film: Death Row Diet

Just because you’ve been sentenced to death doesn’t mean you can’t look good doing it. Animator Mike Salva made the very funny embedded short film Death Row Diet with Jonathan Katz as the inmate looking to pick up a Weight Watchers endorsement contract while waiting to be put to death, and Tom Leopold as the lawyer helping him achieve his goals.

Katz is, of course, the same Jonathan Katz of the late, lamented Comedy Central “squigglevision” animated series Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Although Death Row Diet isn’t squiggly, the audio director and editor is Tom Snyder, co-creator of Dr. Katz. Tom Leopold is a long-time comedy actor and writer, having written several episodes of Seinfeld and Cheers, amongst writing and acting in a ton of other things.

This all gives Death Row Diet a slightly higher profile than many other animated shorts that I post to Bad Lit.
