Autism Speaks has new meaning for 'Covert Affairs' Christopher Gorham

11 November 2010 3:28 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

On Thursday, Nov. 4, stars gathered at the offices of Creative Arts Agency (CAA) in the Century City neighborhood of Los Angeles, Calif., for "Acts of Love: Parenthood," a benefit evening of music and dramatic readings by Word Theatre, that raised $100,000 for Autism Speaks, a national non-profit autism advocacy organization.

The night also honored Jason Katims, executive producer of the NBC series "Parenthood," an ensemble family drama. It includes a storyline about Adam and Kristina Braverman (Peter Krause, Monica Potter), parents dealing with a son, Max (Max Burkholder), on the autism spectrum, inspired no doubt in part by Katims' own similar experience with his teenage son.

For one attendee, the evening was a lot more than just raising money for a worthy cause.

If NBC's Parenthood is facing the axe, it's news to executive producer Jason Katims. "It's the second time I've heard this today," he told TV Guide Magazine at the annual Autism Speaks event in Los Angeles on November 4. Katims said he had not read the E! Online article that suggested that his show might be in danger as a result of no new episodes airing in December, but was quick to kill all negative speculation...

Watch the Trailer for William H. Macy’s New Showtime Series Shameless

20 October 2010 4:08 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In keeping with the tradition of mining our friends across the pond for new television material, the latest series snatched up from Channel 4 is Showtime’s Shameless. As we previously reported, the hourlong dramedy is headlined by the always great William H. Macy, and revolves around a working-class Chicago clan dealing with the recession.  Macy plays the alcoholic single-father dealing with a family of six, and is joined by Emmy Rossum (Phantom of the Opera) as the eldest daughter who is tasked with keeping her brothers and sisters in line.

Joan Cusack replaces Allison Janney, who filmed a guest spot in the pilot but could not continue with the rest of the show as her ABC series with Matthew Perry, Mr. Sunshine, was picked up to air as a midseason replacement this year.  The project is spearheaded by television uber-producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing) who also wrote the pilot. »

Parenthood Review: "Orange Alert"

20 October 2010 6:13 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Because all shows somehow feel obligated to do Halloween episodes, and thanks to a little piece of Zeek Braverman history, October 31 is a huge deal for the Parenthood clan.

What could have been just another bunch of forced Halloween stories turned out to be pretty great, however, blending humor and drama seamlessly as the show always does.

"Orange Alert" was yet another example of why Parenthood will never be that popular and why it's so good. Slow-moving, nuanced and understated, it's just that true to life.

Parenthood was still heartwarming and funny, only in costume this week.

We never guessed that Zeek of all people had a touching Halloween story to relay, telling Max how he and Camille crammed all the holidays into the Halloween before he went to Vietnam.

Every once in awhile, Craig T. Nelson peels back a layer of a guy you forget is there, making Zeek more than the cliched, »

Is abortion no longer too taboo for TV?

12 October 2010 5:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Young mothers are all the rage on TV these days, whether their real lives are being wrenchingly chronicled on Teen Mom, their struggles are being melodramatized on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, or they’re dancing with stars (hello, Bristol Palin). But addressing unwanted pregnancy on the small screen inevitably raises a much trickier issue: abortion. And, well, it’s about time.

Sure, Maude featured its title character ending her unwanted pregnancy during its very first season on the air in 1972. But controversy-wary networks fell mostly silent on the issue in the ’80s and ’90s. In fact, even five years ago, »

HollywoodNews.com: Tough economic times will be hitting Craig T. Nelson hard this fall – on big and small screen. He plays the CEO in John Wells’ forthcoming ‘Company Men’ corporate downsizing drama, with Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner and Chris Cooper also in the cast. And on ‘Parenthood,’ he reveals, things will be going from bad to real bad for his family patriarch character, Zeek Braverman, who’s been having money trouble.

“It’s something that I talked about with Jason,” says Craig, referring to series creator Jason Katims. “It hasn’t happened yet, but it’s going to. With the finances, the counseling he and his wife (Bonnie Bedelia) are going through, and some of the other things that are going on in the family, they’re trying to weather the storm.”

So, you are joining the cast of Parenthood for its second season?

[DVD Picks of the Week] Sept. 7th

7 September 2010 8:26 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I took a sabbatical last week, mostly since there wasn’t much hitting shelves worth talking about. Now I’ve returned to get hyped over pretty awesome movies.  Hit the jump to see what’s hit DVD and Blu-ray in the last two weeks:

Grab ‘Em Right Away:

Stardust (Blu-ray)

Directed by: Matthew Vaughn

Written by: Jane Goldman, Matthew Vaughn & Neil Gaiman

Starring: Claire Daines, Ian McKellen, Charlie Cox, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro & Mark Strong

Why Should you buy this? It’s the best fantasy action film in the last decade.  Matthew Vaughn was able to take the style of films like The Princess Bride and bring it back for children of today to enjoy.  It has one of my favourite De Niro characters of the last decade as well.  It’s hard for me to put into words how much this movie makes me smile every time I watch it. »

Friday Night Lights Season 4 DVD Review

2 September 2010 11:01 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Friday Night Lights has proven to be the Little Engine that Could. The show recently finished airing its fourth season and a fifth is on the way in October.  The upcoming season will be its last, but the fact that the show has pushed on for so long, despite its lack of success with ratings, seems to say something about its quality.  The fourth season was just released on DVD and you can check out my full review of it after the jump:

I didn’t want to like Friday Night Lights. If anyone was guilty of rolling their eyes when the first commercials for the series premiere came along, I certainly was.   However, something I have heard from multiple sources is absolutely true: watch one episode and you’ll be hooked.   I was forced to sit down and watch an episode early on in the first season and I »
