Lionsgate has a new video from the upcoming romantic comedy which stars Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried and Topher Grace. Fox Searchlight Pictures has announced that the company will release Regency Enterprises’ and River Road’s drama Twelve Years A Slave. Directed by Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame) and written by John Ridley, based on the book by Solomon Northup, Twelve Years A Slave stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender (who starred in McQueen’s previous films Hunger & Shame), Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard, Lupita Nyong’o and Paul Giamatti.
The film is scheduled to be released in theaters right in the middle of Awards season – Friday, December 27, 2013.
Twelve Years A Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. More of a fan of Shame on paper than on film, Sean Bobbitt’s camera work was flawless and Michael Fassbender once again went beyond the call of duty, but for me, Steve McQueen’s Hunger still resonates and would be the principle reason why his third feature ranks so well on this list. What will likely be compared to Quentin Tarantino’s Django upon its release, Twelve Years a Slave features one hell of a stellar cast.

There are some cinephile circles who’ve come to think that James Gray is in a class of his own or that he is on par with the likes of PTA, David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky and co. While there are several admirable strengths in Little Odessa and the three films that have followed (I’ve especially embraced the darker, more nuanced qualities that remind of 70′s American Independent cinema) but the filmmaker has yet to topple over into masterpiece category – perhaps it is in the year where his output is a total of two (he wrote Blood Ties) where we’ll see him receive accolades from all critics circles and not just the French. »
